Books / Re: The Dark is Rising

I've wondered about the number of young adult books based on western mythology before, Susan Cooper's books were among my favorite when I was young.  Since then I've come across more books based on eastern myths, such as Journey to the West (which is an interesting one to read at the same time as Hesse's Journey to the East).  I think in the US at least we often just don't know about the books based on other culture's myths because of difficulties in the translation of both the text and the ideas.  And our authors don't write books based on non-Western myths because they are outside our experience and knowledge.

Another interesting series from the UK is the "His Dark Materials" books by Philip Pullman.  Its a shame they aren't as popular as the Potter books, I think they are more thought provoking for kids - though perhaps that is why they are less popular.

Hello,
My name is Rob, I'm a recovered MUDder and a recovering RPGer.  For what its worth (not too much, as it turned out) I graduated from Trinity College in CT with a BA in philosophy.  I went straight into the computer programming industry, doing mainly IT programming.  For example, go into any barnes and noble and take a look at the computers they're using - my roommate and I wrote much of the software you'll see there.  Anyway, my preferences are battletech muds though I had to give them up cold turkey, and RPGs such as Call of Cthulhu, Cyberpunk 2020 and Mage.  D&D bores me to tears unless the DM is really good.  All my favorite CCGs died off years ago, don't get into them any more.  I also have found very few people near me in California who play RPGs, so I haven't gamed much lately.  I still enjoy reading the rule books though.  Aside from all that, I'm married, no kids, and spend my free time riding a Kawasaki ZX-6R and learning Chinese.

Actually I'm a bit of both - lit geek and scottish that is.  Amazing what can wander in to a web site, eh?  But what do you expect with a site like this?  SoCal doesn't seem to have much an interest in RPG'ing so I haven't been able to keep up with that, and my wife goes into uncontrollable laughter when I make any move to dredge out my tabletop stuff.  But don't worry, I'm 99% lurker anyway..

Yes, well I had plenty of time to waste, and had just found this site.  I guess I went a bit further into the archives than I realized, just saw the 2002 date.
