So I put mine up as a blog post. Which I will link to here. Critique appreciated, but not necessary. I'm mainly shooting for getting on WE. *crosses fingers*
"Magic is what makes fantasy fantastic," someone says, "you can't apply rules to them or else it loses wonder!" I respond, "Sure, but if you want to write them you will certainly want to know how they work." Writing is all about execution, and I find applying some basic laws of physics to magic systems make them more understandable and realistic. Here, I'm going to outline my basic method for developing a magic system.

Gavilar was learning to read, wasn't he?I don't think so. When Szeth wrote Gavilar's last words next to him everyone assumed that Gavilar had done it himself. This led people to think he could read and write. Even though he probably couldn't.
Or maybe they have acidic saliva that makes it easier to dig. Watch out for those acidspren though.I don't think burrowing into solid rock is gonna work very well.
How about soulcasting owls. They have a limited power to soulcast stone in order to burrow, granted to them by a shard. Nothing powerful or useful except in order to dig through stone.
