I got a chance to speak with my two teachers today about the story, and overall, they liked it. One of the teachers reads sci-fi and fantasy a lot, and he was totally sucked in, but the one who doesn't read much of that genre (the one who hands out the grades) liked it plenty, too!  They mentioned problems with it, but it was mostly similar to what you all said about characterization.

Speaking of which, I received a wonderful for Veresh's character that, if it goes well, should solve many of the issues with it. Now it's time for the rewrite.
