Title: WT FRICK!?
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on September 14, 2004, 08:30:29 PM
ok, i just saw the weirdest thing ever in my life.

At first I thought this statement was an exaggeration, but the more I think about it, the more I realize, I really haven't ever seen anything weirder in my life.

It's a show on PBs called Boohbah. For the first 10 minutes, they dance. And by "They" i mean these weird fluffy puffball suits. With little lights over their eyes. kids voices call out "Boohbah" and other nonsensical syllables which the fluffballs respond to

Then, they dance too fast and start spining. And then there's a light. And they're flying. Then a group of kids walk in a circle with a big present, which then starts looking colorful, like soemthing Timothy Leary sees in his more lucid moments.

then out come some card board cut outs of people named "Grandpapa" and "Ms. Lady" and "Mr. Man" (though he's not the REAL Mr. Man, as he's not a dancing monkey).

finally there suddenly appeared a desert landscape with a giant notepad and pencil and a flower. Grandpapa comes running from the distance, takes the pencil (taller than he is) and starts sketching the flower. The pencil keeps breaking which he sharpens in a giant pencil sharpener that suddenly appears. This whole segment is narrated by an extremely bored English man from off stage.

Then, They dance again, bouncing off each other like psychotic episodes in a pinball machine. They hyperreact and turn into light again, only to fall asleep in some sort of milkweed pod or soemthing, which flies over LA, to land in some kids back yard, who claps her hands in front and back over a pool of irridesent light on the grass as she turns in a circle by quarters.

Another kid takes his turn stoping in circles around the same pool of light in a different yard. The third set of kids were... having an epileptic fit? I'm not sure. It involved jumping and arm waving. I think they'd done this before and that's all they were capable of doing.

Finally, They dance again. twice.

Yeah, forget the kids, I think this show is gona give ME nightmares. all I can say is WTFRICK!? and to quote, "Yeah, that scores about a 9 on my weird ***-o-meter." Nine? Nothing. that's at LEAST an 11.

Thing is, the kids REALLY responded to it. Rachael is running about the house saying "boohbah!" over and over, and Sarah and Elizabeth kept trying to do the dances.

Sounds like something akin to the Teletubbies. My nephew loved that when he was about a year or so old. And most of the time, it's just those big plush weird things cooing out of the screen, with the baby face on the sun smiling down. Not something that was made for adults, that's for sure.

Didn't someone already post this:

That's the same thing, right?

it's made by the same people that did teletubbies and is supposed to encourage kids to exercise.  And ya, it's the same thing EUOL.

I know it's still on, but what ever happened to Sesame Street? When I was growing up it was that, Mr Rogers and Zoom and I was good. None of this freak-o drug inspired trippy stuff.

There actually are some good children's shows. Blue's Clues and Dora the Explorer are two by Nickolodean that pass muster. PBS has Dragon Tales. Even Disney has... uh... oh well, can't win them all.

I only see them when visiting my nephew, but they seem to be fun shows. He's kind of grown out of Blue (he's 4 this month), but Dora is still up on the list for him.

My baby is seven months old and the only shows he enjoys to watch are Boobah, Teletubbies, and Jeopardy.  The first two seem a given since they have lots of movement, bright colors, and little kids.  The last one we haven't figured out yet.  My baby just seems to like the color blue and Alex Trebek.  It's kind of disturbing.

sweet! That's what we can name our literary themed restaurant
(dishes to include mega-sized side dishes named "Lord of the Onion Rings" and "Lord of the Fries")

I must admit that I dig the Teletubbies.  In fact, I believe it is one of the most genius shows on television.  And I'm not joking.

On a related note, Fell told me that he used to turn on Teletubbies with the sound off, and crank up Santana.  Very trippy stuff.

These are grown people that like to watch the Teletubbies. Do they sound like they know what is good for them?

I never said I really like watching Teletubbies.  I just said I think it's really genius.

Einstein was a genius. Shakespeare was a genius. Neal Stephanson is a genius.

Teletubies is genius like Fish are good runners.

aposable? does that mean the opposite of "posable", ie, capable of posing? Guess that's why we don't see many fish supermodels

I knew what you meant, but I was astounded that you could spell "bulimic" as belimic after just being teased about "opposable" thumbs.
