Everything Else / Britain loses its marbles
« on: April 24, 2003, 12:01:03 PM »
Over the weekend England lost the international marbles tournament.  In the 70 years of the tournament, they have won 68 times.  Germany beat them this year and last.  Is the British Marble Empire fading?

Everything Else / Alabama Primary

The Republican National Convention is being held September 2nd, where Bush is expected to be nominated as the Republican candidate for President.  However, the deadline for getting your name on the ballot in Alabama is August 31st.  That means that, unless a bill passes in the Alabama legislature (democrat controlled) then republicans will have to write in George W. Bush!

Everything Else / Germs for Sale
« on: April 17, 2003, 12:09:08 PM »
CNN is reporting that you can buy the germs that made Paul McCartney sick.  Some guy who allegedly caught the flu virus from McCartney is selling plastic bags that he coughed into on Ebay.  The highest bid so far is about two dollars.

Here's the link, but i think the link connects to a big long page, so you might have to look for the story.

Movies and TV / Gollum
« on: April 15, 2003, 03:38:43 PM »
So sometime a while back there was a thread here where everyone was arguing about whether or not Gollum was eligible for an Oscar nomination.  This isn't quite as good, but MTV has announced they're adding a new category to their annual awards for "Best Computer Animated Character."  Other nominees include Yoda, Dobby, and Kangaroo Jack.  I think Gollum has this one in the bag.

Well folks, it's still rumor, but it looks like a little more official rumor now.

Everything Else / How should I spend my 25 dollars?

If I don't hear some good recommendations soon it will probably all go to Heroclix guys.

Table-Top Games / Patriot City
« on: March 27, 2003, 06:39:03 PM »
On Saturday, Fell and I began the big Patriot City Heroclix campaign (the rules are posted somewhere on this site, I'm sure).  We found out two things.  First, Fell is a big sucky loser.  I beat him five games to one.  Hmmm.... I wonder why he hasn't made mention of the campaign yet...

Second, and to Fell's credit, we found out the rules are a little screwy and if you begin winning consistently, then you will most definately continue to win consistently (due to the corrolation between gaining victory points and getting big scary guys).  By the time that the fifth game was over, I had earned enough points to have about a 600 point team, whereas Fell had about 180.  Since the teams have to be somewhat similar in size, I stopped cashing my points in (I already had Mr. Fixit, so I wasn't to concerned).

CNN is reporting today that he may not be coming back for Spiderman 2 because of a bad back.

So, we're going to war.

Not like this was unexpected, but it's about time that something happened.

Video Games / Diablo 2
« on: March 04, 2003, 10:46:45 AM »
Okay.   So I hate RPGs (in computer form).  I hate them mostly because I get really sick of having to go to this town and talk to all the villagers and then go to that castle and talk to the king and the guards and the scullery maid and then go to the old hermit who lives on the hill.  I hate that.  I really really hate that.

Anyway, while playing Warcraft 3 I realized that I kept losing because I only cared about making my hero tougher and I kept ignoring my base.   So Fell suggested I try Diablo.

Bah!

It is the most addictive game I've ever played, and there is a remarkable dearth of having to talk to anybody.  My RPG hatred still shows up a little.  I can only handle the first act before I have to start over with a different character.  But still -- Hoo Boy!

Everything Else / Fellfrosch's unborn child
« on: March 04, 2003, 10:37:50 AM »
So Fell's wife is going to give birth to a bouncing baby boy next month some time, and they still don't have a name picked out.  What are some good ideas?

I would like to propose that, in honor of the late Mister Rogers, the kid be named Cornflake S. Pecially.

At the far too young age of 74, Mr. Rogers has finally gone to the big Land of Makebelieve in the sky.  Daniel striped tiger, we hardly knew ye...

CCGs / What makes the perfect CCG?
« on: February 18, 2003, 12:32:25 PM »
Fell and I have been talking about this lately, and I wanted to know what you guys think.  What makes or breaks a CCG?

Just to start the conversation, I think that any kind of 'board' is a pain in the neck (like Star Trek's space line or the path the fellowship follows in LotR).  The most important thing to me in a CCG is that you can just shuffle your deck and play - you don't need this card or that card to be pulled out first.

Any thoughts?

Movies and TV / This is not about Movies or TV

This is probably the most appropriate column for music news.  Have you heard that Johnny Cash has a new album out and that his big new single is a remake of Marilyn Manson's 'Hurt'?  I heard it this morning and it's actually pretty cool.
