Everything Else / Banning the UN
« on: October 08, 2003, 11:45:06 AM »
Al Snow, the city councilman who was the major driving force behind banning the UN in La Verkin, Utah, came in eighth place in the election yesterday.

For those of you who aren't Utahns (or news-watchers), La Verkin is a tiny town in southern utah (maybe 1000 people?) that recently banned the United Nations.  What does that mean in practical terms?  Who the crap knows.  This is the same little town that has made it mandatory for all adults to own a gun.

Anyway, after getting very soundly defeated yesterday by opponents that were running on the platform of road repair, Al Snow said: "Potholes will never take away your inalienable rights from you like the United Nations."

Everything Else / Nothing Personal
« on: September 19, 2003, 07:57:25 PM »
Okay, so I'm not as cool as EUOL, and not making nearly his kind of money but:

Covenant emailed me tonight and said that they're not satisfied with the title of my book (Nothing Personal) and they want me to think up some other ideas.  I'm not very good at titling anything (it was actually Fell who came up with Nothing Personal) so I want all of you guys to come up with something else for me.

So as to not tie your hands, I won't burden you with such trivial details such as the plot of the book.  Let the creativity fly!

Everything Else / Office Pool
« on: September 18, 2003, 02:49:45 PM »
Okay, since I work in an office full of middle aged women, and therefore miss out on all things football related, I propose we begin an 'office pool' here:

The rules, assuming any of you are interested in playing:

1) Each week, I will post the post the point spreads (I will only choose ten or twelve games).

2)  Post your picks before noon on Thursday (this week -before noon on Friday).

3)  For every correct pick, you'll get a point.

So:  For example, I post:
Texas vs. Virginia Tech (-15)

This means that Virginia Tech is picked to win by 15 points.  So, you can vote two ways:  Either say that Virginia Tech will win by at least 15, or that they won't.

If you choose VT, and the score is VT: 21 Texas: 13, then you are big loser (VT only won by 7, not 14).

Does this make any sense?  It's really pretty simple.

Also - the ten or fifteen games I choose each week will be either be big deal games, or games of local interest to participants.  Consequently, being in Utah, there will be a lot of MWC games.  If you have an alma mater or other favorite you want included, let me know.

Everything Else / UN Human Development Report
« on: July 10, 2003, 03:25:48 PM »
The UN has listed all of the countries in the world from highest quality of life to lowest.  My guess is that it was just a couple of guys sitting around at lunch with nothing to do.  It all sounds pretty subjective to me, but here you go:

Norway is number one!
US is number 7
UK is number 13
Sierra Leone is the big loser at 175

Nothing too surprising.  Scandinavia did really well.  Africa did really bad.

Site News / Urgent Press Release
« on: July 10, 2003, 12:41:08 PM »
Apparently, the following press release was sent out to a lot of papers in Utah.  Only City Weekly printed it, and did so because they thought it was hilarious.  It is from a group called America's Loving Intervention for our Nation's Children.

"Why is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, J.K. Rowling's fifth book, being released at midnight, 12:01 a.m., on June 21, a date on the official Satanic calendar, one of their eight most important annual holy days that calls for a Satanic human sacrifice? And why have many teachers, preachers and nearly all of the national and international media been promoting Rowling's 'white' witchcraft in schools, when they are so opposed to Christian holy days being honored, as the foundation of America?

"Why is Rowling so private about her personal life? Anyone who knows so much about witchcraft is either going to expose and oppose witchcraft, white and black, or s/he will help promote both.

"Was Elizabeth Smart a victim of these evil deeds? ... Why does she and all of her siblings have English royalty, Illuminati names? ... Illuminati's/33rd Degree Masons' No. 1 goal? Destruction of families!"

Music / Teen Angst, or something
« on: May 29, 2003, 10:44:38 AM »
There are two songs on the market that bug the livin' crap out of me.
1) Avril Lavigne's 'Complicated'.  I really dislike her for several reasons, but this song in particular ticks me off.  She starts off saying "Life's like that." and "that's the way it is."  I always want to scream back at the radio (and I admit that I have) that "you're freaking fifteen years old!  How the $%$#% do you know what life is like!  Furthermore, why are YOU telling ME 'that's the way it is'!"

2) Pink's 'Don't let me get me'.  Despite the fact that I find the title somewhat clever, the song generally seems a little contradictory.  She says "LA told me you'll be a rock star - all you have to change is everything you are".  The message is clear: she doesn't want to be like everybody else - she wants to be herself.  Then, in the chorus, she says: "Don't want to be my friend no more - wanna be somebody else."  Whaaa?  So the song isn't about her wanting to be herself?  She wants to be someone else?

Granted, I shouldn't look for greatness in teen pop, but it still ticks me off whenever it comes on the radio.

Everything Else / Lost in the translation

My buddy just got back from Hawaii and brought me a tube of hand lotion.  The enitre thing is written in Japanese, so I don't know what it says, but under the name there are two lines in English:
  "verry moister hands for you"
                 &
"whis hight quality of olive oile"

It makes me wonder if Spriggan was involved somehow.

So - when Prof X is zapping all the mutants world wide, how come it doesn't hurt him or, more importantly, Jason?  Does Cerebro shelter them somehow?

So, despite the fact that I have a plethora of very fun games right here (Diablo 2, Warcraft 3, Battlefield 1942, etc...) I still find myself playing Railroad Tycoon 2 more than any of them.

Site News / Introduce yourself - right on!
« on: April 24, 2003, 12:06:44 PM »
So we've got a pile of new members that are posting fairly regularly and, even though we've had threads like this in the past, I think it would be interesting to hear a little from everybody.  The member profiles are notoriously uninformative.

May I suggest a few things:

1)  Everyone posts once - just a little about yourself.  Don't use this thread to say "Welcome Fell, good to meet you."  That way the tread will stay more organized and usable.

3) On a similar note, if something about you changes, modify your post rather than making a new one.

2)  The thread won't get deleted so that we won't have to have threads like this in the future.
