Title: MySpace (A.K.A. The Dance-Off Thread)
Post by: EUOL on April 20, 2006, 08:18:59 AM
Well, it's what all the kids are doing these days, apparently.  And, since a lot of my hits come via MySpace, it was suggested to me that I throw up a page for my work there.

http://www.myspace.com/brandon_sanderson

Any suggestions/hints on making the page look better?

NOOOO!
YOu've become "one of them!"

Not that I have any idea what one of them is. Yours is actually the very first myspace account I've ever looked at.

I'd get the colors more like your regular site, to preserve some continuity. But other than that, it looks pretty much like an ad space. I'd either use it for a specific purpose separate from your site or drop it.

Post by: Spriggan on April 20, 2006, 09:40:49 AM
mySpace pages are boring and horribly done.  If you see people with like 5000 friends it's just one long page of comments and little else.  Plus it's become such a fad now that it's uncool to sell out your self-respect to be on there.

Sell outs.

Besides it's just marketing that they're doing, MySpace has so many hits a day it's free advertising to be on there.

I honestly don't know what people see in that site, I sit next to people in class that just spend all period on there randomly clicking links and asking people to be their "friends" and that's the whole point of the site.  Kind of sad if you ask me.
Title: Re: MySpace
Post by: EUOL on April 20, 2006, 09:51:40 AM
lol.  The only way you heard of them was because they "sold out" and got paid for their music.

This is a business.  The fact of the matter is, MySpace is a portal for a large number of people who match the demographic that I would like to target with my novels.  MySpace is the #1 referrer to brandonsanderson.com--beating out the twg forums, even.

If there are young people there who might be interested in my books, I want to get them to click through to my website.  That means making a MySpace page.  Mock me if you must, but I'll bet I get more sales from a MySpace page than from a NY Times newspaper advertisement.
Title: Re: MySpace
Post by: Spriggan on April 20, 2006, 10:12:49 AM
You'd get more sales if you drove to book cons and sold them out of the back of your car like M.C. Hammer did with his first CD.  You'd sell even more if you wore parachute pants and could dance like no one else...except maybe SADDAM!!!

Go Saddam, Go Saddam, Go!!!

Man, if you could dance like that you'd be selling out of everything.

Search Google for MySpace layouts and backgrounds. This site has a few cool ones:

http://www.gazzump.com/graphics/layouts/

or here (http://weblogs.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=weblogs&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freeweblayouts.net%2F) or here (http://weblogs.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=weblogs&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.towercodes.com%2Fmyspace-layouts%2Fmyspace-layouts.php).

You just take their code and put it into your profile and it will change what your layout looks like.

Hahaahaha. MySpace. Oh, wait... I'm on MySpace too, sorta, so I should lay off. ;)

I'm not a huge fan of MySpace (I'm on there mainly because one of my good friends likes to communicate that way). BUT if it'll help EUOL rake in the dough, then it's all good.

I agree, try to make it look a little more like your other page to keep the continuity.  Btw, who's Tom?  Aside from a VERY popular guy on MySpace.

(On a funny note, the first ad I saw on MySpace was an ad for TagWorld.  Their line: "Tired of MySpace? Meet cool people at Tagworld.")
Title: Re: MySpace

Tom is a MySpace employee.  They just add him as a friend to you when you make your account.

Everyone:  Vote in the Sanderson Brother Dance-off extravaganzaaahaaa!

Is Brandon a loser for selling out and making a MySpace page, or is Sprig wrong in calling him names?  The brothers are taking it to the street in a "Beat-it" style street fight dance number!

(Note, please vote based on the dancing, not on whether or not you actually think I'm a moron....)

Bracket one: Dancing Sadam vs. Dancing Gay Spiderman

You people frighten me.

I vote for spidey (he's got class and resolution that saddam lacks)
Also, 6 flags, because Megaman looks dumb.
I have to vote Walken over Voltron, because while the Voltron animation is awesome, the dance lacks any substance. I can't see him actually doing it to music.
Finally, Mr. T, because the Batman animation is too disjointed. Ive seen the episode, actually, and it looks better in the original, but the original isn't dancing here.

Bracket One
EUOL 4 / Sprig 3

Bracket Two
EUOL 6 / Sprig 1

Bracket Three
EUOL 4 / Sprig 5

Bracket Four
EUOL 5 / Sprig 2

So, Spiderman just barely managed to out-shimmy Sadam.  (The Hammer pants must have taken him down, just like they did dear Hammer himself...  Either that, or Spidy's ambiguous gayness was just to transfixing.  See: http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2006/20060329.jpg )

Megaman never had a chance.  That old dude from Six Flags not only has way more bits and pixels, but has mind-affecting powers.  (Watch those commercials, and you'll understand....)

Alas, the Walken!  I feel a deep sense of betrayal, let me tell you.  Walken is like Chuck Norris--he's supposed to win no matter what.  The foundations of my understanding of the world have been shaken.  At least he won to worthy competition.  Voltron DOES have some sweet moves.

And, Mr. T. "Pittys" poor Batman.  It is fitting that two aged TV icons should rise from the dust for one final bout.  In the end, I guess Batman should have used his "Bat Mr. T Repellant."  Either that, or he should have learned to dance.  (Honestly, he looks like he's having a seizure to me.)

All right.  So, EUOL wins round one with a total score of 3-1.  I knew I could out-dance my brother.  To further prove this, let us get on to round two, ELECTRIC BOOGALOO!!!!

Let me begin with the Dr. Himself:

PEANUT POWER!!!!
(You may need to give this one a second to load....)

Direct Link:  http://www.brandonsanderson.com/images/heyyacb.mov

besides, I have a good connection here at work, and it hasn't loaded in 20 minutes.

I want to vote for the Peanuts, but really, if you're going to make it difficult for me to even see it... Sprig will win by default. He's got good chances for this round. He can both be less annoying and find a better clip (possibly).

I still can't see it, which is probably due to my soft/hardware, but still it will make voting Peanuts difficult.  Sprigg's is going to have to blow serious chunks to lose my vote.

Yeah, I tried it all.  It turns out it had to do with the specific network I was connecting through.  I have used another network and can see it now.

Dr Evil
Stewie
As for the Napoleon dance off, I am torn.  The original has my fav band as the music.  Does the Napoleon Gates?  If it does, then that has it hands down, otherwise i'll have to flip a coin...

I'll wait for the final video for the Peanuts Bracket.

The NGE clip is cool with way awesome music, but not enough dancing.

lets see some home movies!!!!  I know you got em!!!!
Title: Re: MySpace
Post by: Bookstore Guy on April 27, 2006, 01:38:13 AM
and to go with the original thread of the post, MySpace is great free advertisement.  If you sell only 100 extra books because of MySpace it's worth it because you paid NOTHING!  Smart move!

The Foo Fighters are NOT sellouts.  Their music gets better and better with each release.

Y'know, the anime clip was much better made. Even with less dancing, I'd vote for it as a better thingy to watch.

What anime is it from? I may actually watch that one.

That was from Neon Genesis Evangelion. And yeah, when I was first shown that years ago in the basement of the Pub, it made me want to watch the series too.

But if that one doesn't have enough dancing, then how about this one?

http://www.youtube.com/v/hRNpHBSOPwI

Um, that doesn't seem to be working here, but this link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRNpHBSOPwI) does.

Okay, so, Round Two's matchups are as follows (with the current votes tabulated in brackets)

Bracket One
Dr. Evil (3) vs Mario (4)

Bracket Two
Stewie (4) vs Bender (3)

Bracket Three
Napoleon Dynamite vs Bill Gates (6)

Bracket Four
Peanuts vs Worf

Any comments on bracket four before Worf was posted have not been counted.

I vote:

Dr Evil
Bender
Napoleon Dynamite
Peanuts
Title: Re: MySpace
Post by: The Jade Knight on May 02, 2006, 11:30:42 PM
I vote:
Mario (I used to love that show)
Neither
Napoleon
Worf (the choice of music killed it for Charlie Brown, though I didn't much like Worf)

A note about MySpace:  Most of the artist accounts are fake.  If you search for BT, you'll find at least 10 (if not 20 or 30) accounts for him alone.  Ironically, he actually is on Myspace, but his own account doesn't have his music.  He and Vienna Teng are the only two artists on MySpace I know for certain are real.

So the Foo Fighters there may actually be a fan posing so they can post Foo Fighters music in their profile.  It's quite common.

And MySpace is really just a porn site in disguise.  I generally boycott it because the ads are so bad.

Oh, and for the record, none of those flash-style films work for me.  I had to click the link to see Charlie Brown.
Title: Re: MySpace

Bracket One
Dr. Evil (6) vs Mario (5)

Bracket Two
Stewie (4) vs Bender (5)

Bracket Three
Napoleon Dynamite (3)  vs Bill Gates (7)

Bracket Four
Peanuts (4) vs Worf (2)

Dr Evil takes the lead from Mario, but Bender comes back at Stewie and takes him down!

Napoleon grabs a few votes from his imposter, but Bill still has a commanding lead.

Peanuts pulls ahead of Worf with only six votes tabulated.

We'll leave this open another day or so.

(And, I think that you should just use WHATEVER criteria you feel like using.  If you just happen to like the character, or if you don't like the video quality, or if you like to alphabetize--whatever.)

Final Votes!

Bracket One
Dr. Evil (9) vs Mario (6)

Bracket Two
Stewie (6) vs Bender (6)

Bracket Three
Napoleon Dynamite (5)  vs Bill Gates (9)

Bracket Four
Peanuts (9) vs Worf (5)

Napoleon put up a bigger fight against Bill than I expected!  The Stewie Bender tie should have been expected, considering how much they went back and forth.

Anyway, there we have it.  EUOL wins 2-1 with 1 tie in this round.  That, added with the previous round's winnings ends us at:
EUOL: 5 wins
Sprig: 2 wins

Therefore, I have conclusively proven that getting myself a MySpace account was a cool and utterly un-loserly.  All problems should be settled in this manner.

My brother has expressed exhaustion from all the dancing, but I'm still feeling the groove.  Is there anyone else who'd like to challenge me for Round Three?

I think I have one more round in me.

RULES for round 3:

1) We alternate who goes first, I'll post first for entry 1 and 3.  EUOL will post first for #s 2 and 4.

2) GIFS only, maybe round 4 can be a youtube dance-off.

3) Characters you choose to "counter" someone else's should be linked somehow to that character.  This doesn't have to be like they're in the same show or anything like that but just try to find a reason why your character can counter the other.

I'll Start:
