Title: How many books/year do you read?
Post by: guessingo on March 10, 2010, 09:59:34 PM
I think many of you destroy me in reading volume. I'll include audiobooks in my case too since I like them alot (I use them in my car and when i ride my bike). I think in total I have read or listened to about 220 novels in my life. For most Americans that is alot, many of you probably beat that when you were kids.

I have probably also read all or large parts of about 150 non-fiction books. This does not include all the technical documentation I read at work. I often don't read entire non-fiction books (programming books often overlap for example so I skip stuff).

What about you? I sense that Peter and Bookstore guy have read exponentially more than me. I'll bet Brandon has read alot more than me too. John Scalzi blogged that he reads 1-2 books/week.

An obscene amount.

An obscene amount.

Same here, although probably not as many as Bookstore Guy has to wade through due to his review site. I'd guess though he'd read the same amount, just more that he'd prefer to read.

Where is bookstore guy's review site? Is it TWG reviews? I have not seen that many yet.

I tend to read slow.. usually 1 booka week sometimes it takes me 2 weeks to read a book.  And if I'm really interested in a series I can read 2 maybe 3  300-400 page books in a week.

Elitist Book Reviews. The link is in his signature. Read it, use it, love it.

One year I actually kept track. It was 70ish (fiction & non-fiction novel length), if I included all the books I read for friends who needed an alpha reader (so not officially published, but still novel length), YA books I read with my daughter, church stuff, etc. I wrote a ton of book reviews that year, but have gotten a little bored with writing reviews since then.

Anyone who wants to write a review for TWG can. You submit off the front page.

@bookstore guy: great site. I disagree with you on Empire by Orson Scott Card. I did not like it at all. I thought it was silly and too contrived. The Augustus/Octavian tie in made me roll my eyes. Being a moderate like Card, I get his annoyance with liberals and conservatives bickering over everything, but the story lacked the necessary sophistication to pull something like this off.

Last year I read 108 books and started, but gave up on, 20 more.

do you read those novels for work? I don't know how you can have the time to read 108 novels on your own.

That novel wasn't reviewed by me.  It was reviewed by Nick.  We co-run the site.  He wanted to review Card's novel.  If you notice, it is one of a very few selection of reviews not done in the voice of "we."  I don't read Card.  At all.  Nick, thankfully, doesn't share my bias.  In fact, one of my requests when Nick and I started the blog was that I never be required to read a novel by Card.

Anyone actually know how many books Brandon read before he started writing his books?

All of them.

I read about 2/month because I'm lazy.

Brandon needs to stop writing and read more. It would stimulate the economy with all the fantasy books he would buy.

When I was in grade school/high school I probably averaged four or five books a week, but since then I have tapered off.  Now it's three or four books a month.

I was sick a lot last year, so I read a lot. I'm a stay-at-home mom so when I don't feel well but I still need to take care of my kids, I end up reading a lot.

I've never actually kept track.  I just read.  Got through Storm of Swords in a week of being sick though.  Pretty much all I did.  Guess that gives some indication of how fast/slow I read.

Edit:
{
Holy freaking cool, Batman!  So, I logged into Shelfari tonight and on my account's homepage it says:  "You’ve read 8 books this year. Last year you read 30 books, so you’re ahead of your pace."  Who knew?  Guess that's my pace.  I usually read largerish books, so this doesn't really surprise me, but I really had no clue about my pace until tonight.  :)

I generally don't join Social Networking sites, but thanks for the tip on shelfari.

I used to read at least one novel a week, probably more like two or three. Now my reading's slowed down a lot, unfortunately.

I'm guessing I probably read somewhere between 30-50 books a year though, still.

I think my average is 4 a week. Unless I'm reading a series, then I tend to die down to two a week. Granted - I'm in high school, and half the time I'm just reading. Plus I have a kindle - so I can just flip to the next book when I finish one in class. I think since the start of this month I've already read at least 15 books. Which puts me at about 4 a week I guess.

Actually, I use Shelfari exclusively for tracking my books.  Those I own, those I'm reading, those I want to read, etc.  It's awesome.  Yes, there are loads of paths to Social Networking within Shelfari but for the most part I stay away from them.  Though I did get roped into being the Admin for a Fantasy Books group...  Don't really do much for it though.  ;D

The one thing I don't like about Shelfari is that there are too many forums. There are many just for science fiction or fantasy. It is better with less forums so you get a larger community on each forum, but I guess people can make forums.

I like how they have images of books. I thought that was a cool touch.

I've been looking for something like Shelfari for a while, just as a way of keeping track of all the books I've read. Don't plan to visit the forums, although that may change at some point. Right now I'm trying (likely in vain) to make a complate list of every book I've ever read.

This may take a while...

I use goodreads because that's what my friends are on and I like seeing what they are reading. I don't do any of the bookgroups, though.

I average 1-2 books a week.  When reading Sanderson, Butcher, Rowling or Salvatore that goes up to one book everyday.
