Interesting suggestions.  Not sure on non-D&D stuff, but maybe revised Mutants and Masterminds, Werewolf, GURPS.

Games Den I think did good for D&D players, Complete series is very good, I would also add Races Of Eberron and Expanded Psionics Handbook.  Maybe they don't play Eberron, but the book has all the rules for playing all the new Eberron races, so you can add them into any campaign.  It even has a few sidebars about using them outside Eberron.  Spell Compendium would also be awesome, but you might have trouble finding it.  Not sure if I'd recommend Weapons of Legacy for a player, getting magic items is kind of depends on the DM, but a box of minis or maybe the Three Dragon Ante card game.

But the DM suggestions was a little weak, Underdark is also kinda old.  For DMs I might recommend Heroes of Battle, Heroes of Horror, maybe the enviroment books (Starting with Stormwrack cause its the newest, then Sandstorm, then Frostburn).  Libris Mortis if they liked undead (should be easy to tell, cause they'd talk about vampire/zombie movies and stuff all the time).  DMG 2 is okay.  MM 2 and MM3 could be useful to DM and players, but I couldn't recommend MM 2 because of the older edition and I couldn't recommend MM3 because of all the mistakes in the monster stats.

Im tempted by the environment books as well...

Stormwrack looks spiffy for a sailor like me..

and Ms. Fish... your ruse was hysterical.

Good job on keeping your cover, guys! I don't think I could have lasted that long. But I probably would have done a good job of genuine cluelessness before six months ago. And you even made some friends in the bargain. Nice.

I told my wife about this article, and she said, "When we were dating I just asked your friends what game you played, and then bought the newest book." That's where I got Rifts: Australia.

I love this column. It perfectly captures the experience that MsFish and I had. It was so much fun--like when I used to do drama.

Although, I should mention that it was my brilliant plan to recruit a clerk at the front of the store and get him to escort us into the forbidden back area of Games People Play. I can't believe how segregated the gaming section is! It's like they're trying to hide it. It's even separated by a barrier of sci-fi and fantasy books, as if to alert people to the fact that you are leaving the normal world and entering geekdom. No wonder part-geeks like myself have a complex.

And yes, I do like the term "little men." I still think it's funny that all of you grown men like to play with "little men."  ;D

*I* can help it. I'm not a fan of New ENgland literature in general.

Ms Fish, this was a great article.  I've never been comfortable in a game store, and though I don't have trouble looking at the shelves, I shudder at the thought of actually playing a game there.  I don't know why.

Despite this, he has played in one once. And he was self-conscious the whole time.

I'm glad you liked it, HoM.

I'm actually having second thoughts about going.  I mean, I won't know anyone.  At all.  And that will probably be weird.  And I don't have a car, which complicates everything.  So we'll see if I actually make it to one of their game night things.

I'm also a little disappointed that none of the guys I talked to came and posted.  I gave them all the information.  Sad.

Very funny. I love reading your stuff. There's no way I would have been able to do that with a straight face, I would have been giggling the entire time.

I, as said dyed in the wool gaming store going geek girl, or however you put it, think you should show up to our game on Saturday.  I'm sure Pete would love it too and if necessary, I would even take you home.

Welcome Alcarinque.  ;D

And you should take MsFish to the gaming night. She has more time now that I've moved away and can't play.

You need to take some survival lessons from us girls, since all of the girls survived on Saturday night and you, well... didn't.

Not too evil...just a little more...deadly than I'm used to.  Though I must say that the conversation about the attractiveness of fudge was most amusing.  If I came to your game on Thursday nights instead could I actually play?  Thursday nights are much better for me than Saturdays.
