Title: Heroclix: If I wanted to jump back in...
Post by: Mr_Pleasington on February 03, 2006, 01:38:15 AM
Some of you may remember that my first article here was all about how to collect Heroclix on a budget.  That was long ago and my collection was sold many years back.

So, say I wanted to get back in just for casual play/collection. I like Marvel way more than DC.  What's the best and cheapest way to go?

I know, I know...grab a starter. What after that.  I haven't been keeping track of expansions.

Armor Wars is the newest Marvel expansion, and is one of the best sets in a long time, however you could find boosters of older sets for fairly cheap on e-bay where you could also buy figure lots for a decent price (like 100 figs for $10-$15) though these are all random and mostly REVs.

Fantastic Forces is the second newest expansion and lots of people don't like it because there are only 3 figures in a booster (one is a large or double based figure).

Starter wise don't pick up the Universe starter, get Icons (DC) it's a great deal plus there's a new Marvel Starter coming out this summer (it should be announced next week).

I'd say ebay is definitely your best bet for building a cheap colelction. You can buy pretty large figure lots for fairly cheap, if you don't want uniques, and then just start buying Armor Wars boosters (an awesome set with excellent collation, and a pretty high unique rate).

This looks pretty cool, and is surprisingly cheap. We still have several months before it hits, but it seems like a cool way to get people into (or back into) the game.

yes it does.

I like these new Starters, they're a nice way to keep popular characters in the game without having to always repeat them in the boosters.  Also this one makes sense with the timing of the movie.

One question, did they ever combine the Marvel and DC abilities cards?  Have they made it so the points balues are compatible now?

They always have used the same point system so there's no difference between the two that way.  The difference is in how the designers saw the two "worlds" with the previous designer thinking DC was more powerful then Marvel thus DC having many more high point figures the Marvel.

As for the PAC, it's always had the same powers listed on them (with the exception of when on set introduced a new power that wasn't in the other one yet) but don't list the Team Abilities, obviously, of the other sets.  So you won't find out what the X-Men TA is on the DC PAC, many of them are the same so you could just look at the Titan's TA since it's the same as X-Men.

In other words: yes.

Ah, I see.

When I stopped playing DC had just come out and their SAC had new abilities not yet ported to Marvel.

I think I'm going to pick up a starter of Icons and then some Armor Wars.

You got some good trade material there.  The Flash and Brainiac are quite popular in the DC side and Black King on the Marvel side.

As for teams it's not hard to come out with a Titan's team with Icons.  You've already got Vet Robin (a good pieces) and all the other Titans.  I'd use him, a Starfire and Beastboy then see if you can add Raven or Cyborg.

The Icons Start Batman is one of the best pieces in the game.  You could place him, Flash, Wonder Woman and maybe Aquaman (if he fits) on a team.

Villain wise you could start out with the three from the starter (Joker, Quinn and Man-bat) for 100pts then add Scarecrow, Blackfire and cheetah.

I'm not that familiar with the Marvel figs but Paladin is a good figure for the price.

Cool!

Now who do I trade Flash with? Who wants it?
