Rants and Stuff / Re: General Religious discussion

I'm curious, does the LDS allow members to join the Oddfellows, Masons, Rosey Cruscians or Shriners?

I'm not certain of the "doctrinal" rules here, but I know that my boss, (a stake president) is a Masonic leader... some sort of poohba.  If you look into politics and Law Enforcement in Utah especially, you will find many a Morman male wearing a Masonic ring.  Also, you will find that most of the Mormon traditional ceremonies are closely related, if not exact replicas, of Masonic rites and traditions.  So, if it is not widely accepted, it is secretly among the society here.

Thank you all!  I have tried to be present today and already have many stories to whittle away the hours in my inbox.  Good stuff.

I would read "On Combat" by Dave Grossman.  He talks about the psychology and physiology behind all types of combat spanning from the Samaurai to modern day Law Enforcement.  Fascinating read.

My husband and I run a 145ish player lvling Aliance guild on Malfurion called Eminence.  We used to be a raiding guild but a sister guild fell apart and now we pug quite a bit and focus on lvling alts.  I have an 80 Shaman: Ixchell and a 58ish DK Mahrandah. and a few other toons

I also have my "get away" alt on Taneris she is a 35ish hunter called Arjunna.
Stop by and say "hi" if you're in the neighborhood!

I would say... the ratings vary.  Nothing hardcore, but hovering around rated R... sometimes popping over to NC-17ish... That's just stabbing in the dark.  *snark.   Most of my stuff would stay around PG-13 I'd wager with a few scenes/chapters revving up a little.  Inevitable battles, really really evil bad guys... really really naughty good guys (and girls) I'm equal opportunity.   :P

Ravenstar,

You are my first official critique here in this forum so... THANKS for letting me read your stuff.   8)
I'm also excited to see other women here so, I hope to read a lot of your work!

Regarding your submission:

I thought your prose was quite sound and your dialogue tight.  The flow was easy to immerse myself into, which is often a rare find in amateur writers (pre-editor).  Even in this short submission, I felt lost, as though I wasn't sure what was going on, but it seemed as though you wanted me to feel that way.  It lent the entire story a mysterious allure that made me very interested to keep going.  I felt as though your descriptions could have used just a little tweaking...   I wanted to know more about what the T'wan looked like, what sort of creatures they were, defining characteristics, etc.  Also, I wanted to get a little more description of the facial expressions/body language of Taq and Tolan as they conversed.  Again their dialog was very good, realistic, and paced so well, but something like 90% of communication is body language and I like to "see" that on tha page as well it can add such dimension to an already fabulous scene.

I was interested and impressed by the way you titled things and people.  i.e.  Infirmarian, Breach, Mentalist, Junction etc.  Really lends it that "other world" quality where you know right off, you're not here and now... very creative.

Just a few tiny things:  First paragraph, ~ "affect" needs to be changed to "effect"  I think...
~Tolan stands "Swiftly" twice... although Taq does not.
~ and in your dialogue, I wondered if the characters say "do not" rather than "don't" on purpose?  Only because that made them seem  a little stiff and unrealistic if they did that all the time... but if that is part of your characterization, then it needs to be done consistently, I suppose.

In all, VERY interesting and nicely done!  I can't wait to read more!   :D

I'm very comfortable with reading all kinds of language, sex, and/or (most especially) violence.  I think that they are an intregal part of life and, when it comes down to it, we read for the drama, escape, and entertainment value, don't we?  As long as I come away edified by the story I'm pretty comfortable with about everything.  That isn't to say, that slipping something of the like in to your story where it doesn't belong just for shock value or whatever is a good idea.  In my opinion, it cheapens the experience.  On the other hand, leaving something real and important out because you're afraid of it?  Doesn't make any sense to me.  I think people need to do more exploring of the darker or more primal part of human nature... Its a brave thing to do.   ;D  I will make sure to stalwartly use the LSVD codes as to not offend anyones more tender sensabilities... I am here to make friends after all.

Hello, I'm Writerainge... My writing monaker is Miranda McTavish.  (I'm a fan of alliteration).   I write because I have so many stories that are in my head I feel like there are real people in there just screaming at me to tell their stories... (some people call that crazy, I call it inspiration)   ;D  I mostly write Paranormal fantasy/mythology with a romantic (and often times erotic) edge.  Some of my inspiration comes from writers such as J.R. Ward, Karen Marie Moning, Lara Adrian, and Charlaine Harris.  I'm 24, live in Utah, work in Law Enforcement and I enjoy what I do... but my dream is to be a Novelist... So here I be, prostrating myself before your collective genius, hoping that you can help me mold myself into what I long to become.

Thanks!  And it was great to read about all of you as well!

Reading Excuses / Anyone into Paranormal Fiction?
« on: June 01, 2009, 06:23:02 PM »
Hello all!
I'm looking to chapter swap with someone who is interested in reading something akin to Paranormal/fiction/fantasy with a Romantic Edge...   (NO Stephanie Meyer here!)  I'm not LDS.  My books are adult fiction and I'm kinda shooting for a more female audience, but not exclusively.  Living in Utah, I've found it difficult to find a critique group...  any ideas??   :-*
