Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Ten Focus Characters of the 10 SA Books
« on: December 26, 2010, 08:18:27 PM »
I think we should stick to the 10~ main characters, and just hope that Brandon does spinoff series with the more interesting characters who were NOT one of the 10.  I'd very much enjoy reading backstories, but I'd enjoy more to forward the story with backstories (I don't need a backstory on Axies if he isn't going to be relevant at all, but I'd LOVE to know about him).

Essentially, Brandon should stick to the 10 characters he has in mind, and we should all hope/pray/bug him endlessly in the hopes that he might do spin off series (or stand alone books) for the characters we loved at the end of the series.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Recommend a book
« on: December 26, 2010, 01:00:35 AM »
There are a lot of good "lighter" series out there, if you want to take a break from really heavy series like Wheel of Time.  Ender's Game is a VERY good book, although not fantasy (more of a sci-fi) it is an extremely good read that I feel obligated to recommend to everyone I ever meet.  The core Dragonlance series is very good, although light, compared to Wheel of Time, or any of Sanderson's books.

For anyone a little younger, like me, I'd go with the Pendragon series.  It has that ring of a "teen" series, but the ideas and fantasy behind it are quite amazing.  Even some adults would probably be very interested in it, and you could bust through the series in a few weeks.

Yeah, I'd really like to see some of that concept stuff too!  Also, I finally got around to checking out your DeviantArt Ink, you're amazing!!  I need to get around to making one of those to post some of my sketches I've done over the past few years, and you've given me ideas for new ones!

Talking about front covers. Which character is suppose to be displayed on the front of the UK cover: http://stormlightarchive.wikia.com/index.php?title=Special:NewFiles&image=Way_of_kings_uk-png?

Not sure.. Dalinar or his son perhaps?  But I personally am not really a fan of the UK cover.  The art is great, but it puts too much of a familiar look to the shardplate, instead of "otherworldly" and awesome beyond words :p

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Spren - (Major Spoilers TWoK)

Ahh yeah, I forgot about the creationspren being visible when she draws sometimes.  So I guess it is a spren specific to Soulcasting, but is seen at different times for different people.  Jasnah doesn't see them in the same way that Shallan sees them, I'm guessing because of their different Order.  We will have to see what else we can learn about Spren in general I suppose, to find out exactly how they are attracted.

Errr, why do people think Shallan only sees the creepy triangle-headed spren in her drawngs?  I'm pretty sure she looked around the room sometimes and would see them out of the corner of her eye.  A specific scene I remember without my book on me, is when she is running through the halls as though chased by them.  It might be plausible that drawing STIMULATES the vision of them (if drawing is connected to her "Order", then maybe its the act of artistic ability that attracts the spren).  We know that spren are attracted to certain things, hence where they get their sub names (honorspren, lifespren, deathspren), so why can't there be artistic spren, that are associated with an artistic Order of the Knights Radient.

This might explain why Jasnah can't see these spren (she isn't artistic, and isn't of the same Order as Shallan).

Right before Kaladin suggests to the bridgemen that what else they could try  is escape, he is  tlaking with Syl, and ready to give up since "He Can't save them."  he finds a stone, and remembers Tien, and talks how he recognized what was happening, how he always felt mdespair take him duing the weeks of the Weeping.   This is only a hint, or it could have some other meaning, or none at all. Most likely it depresses him because there are no highstorms, and he has always probably gained something from those.

I did think it was quite interesting that Weepings had a distinct effect (or at least appeared to) to Kaladin's mood.  The highstorms not being around could be the reason, since he draws his power from there, but I also think he might have a higher tie to the Almighty.  Dalinar and Kaladin could have some very interesting coversations, and might find that they are both connected to the Almighty.  I can't wait to see what the next book presents us.

I think Dalinar and the Parshendi shardbearer makes the most sense, I don't remember there being a highstorm at the time, but it might just be there to sort of depict what they look like.  The art was very well done, and the highstorm and the Shattered Plains themselves made the cover amazing by themselves.

I haven't seen a statement as to what they did (I'm assuming it was maintenance of some sort).  And thanks!  I think it was late when I posted that, plus the excitement behind the post left me making silly mistakes!

Its unfortunate that he died, Tien could have been an interesting character to see in future books.  Like if Kaladin only thought he was dead (the way Brandon explains it in the books, its quite unlikely that he will just appear later).  I have a feeling we'll probably see his parents though in future books.  His mom just sounds so interesting! :O

I went on to say pretty much what you said, "Vin gets a suspicious feeling about a certain informant in an alley, and does not ask him anything.  Brandon says (somewhere, I forget), that it was Hoid."  To me, Hoid is in HoA, since Brandon said he is, even if he is not named.  I don't think he was named in the first 2 as Hoid either (maybe in one of them, but I'm pretty sure not both).

Hoid is expressly named in the 1st and 3rd Mistborn books, but his name does not appear in HoA.

You mean hes not named in WoA?  HoA is the 3rd one :p

"If I remember correctly, which I may not, I think Hoid was in Elantris, and then appeared in all 3 Mistborn books."

Hoid did not appear in HOA, but at a certain point he was in the same city as Vin, but Ruins influence caused here to not see him.

My take is that if Brandon mentioned it once, it would just be an addition to the character, but since he mentions it over and over again (almost every scene involving Tien mentions rocks in someway), Brandon is pointing out something other than a boyhood curiosity.  I didn't make the connection between his interest and stone shaman, but it does make sense.

Mistborn.  First Sanderson book I read (other than Gathering Storm, which I don't count as his even if he did an amazing job with it).  Mistborn just had me hooked, all 3, the whole way through... I just love the ideas of allomancy, and it made sense to me.  I often find myself thinking, I could totally use this metal to make this task easier.
