What do you think is the best MUD ever, and why?

Personally, I've only played text-based muds for any real amount of time.  They aren't the funniest to play, but they are slightly amusing, and generally they are free and have people to chat with.

Any of the Iron Realms ones. probably Achaea, the first and the best, although I'm keen to play some of Lusternia - it has some very neat features.

Well that really depends on what MUD you're playing, doesn't it?

Or maybe I just don't pay any attention to the sections.

Well all muds are computer programs, they should be in VG as much as any Final Fantasy.  It's not a huge deal, but we've moved MUD topics in the past from RP to VG so I think we should be consisitant.

As for my MUD experience, I played one once about 3 years ago and after about 10 mintues trying to just get to the inn that the starting quest wanting me to I let and never went back.  My pholiosphy is "If I can't see where I'm going, it's not worth playing" ie if there's no graphics is crap, unless it's Scottish.

graphic muds *are* way more fun, but imx the gaming part isn't really what text-based muds are about.  But they are great for roleplaying and chatting.

It's a total matter of taste with MUDs, I don't discount them in anyway, but I just never found the effort needed to play them worth the time.

the only mud I've played drove me NUTS. it was a bunch of ego fest driven wannabes ignoring every other story in the pursuit of attention, and then yelling at the others for same.

This is why I like Achaea. To get anywhere in the game, you need to get promoted in your guild. This requires completing tasks, most fairly well balanced in difficulty, but including some such as  "Write a detailed background, know the history of the gameworld to some degree, and complete an In Character Interview."

The Idiots never make it that far.
