Why do they do it?
« on: September 30, 2003, 01:36:22 PM »
Why is it that everyone, excluding us and a few select others, on the net decides that its a cool thing to do such things like: [rant] etc etc etc [/end rant], or "O NO! we had tihs big gig in teh band i try not 2 talk abt teh band nemore bcuz we fite a lot but neway we had tihs big gig & we had 2 CANCEL" etc...

What the hell is so cool, or whatever about that? Huh? SE would you ask your children, and anyone else who has children ask them too.

actually, I do that frequently in chat rooms. it refers to HTML tags. It's funny because <rant> is not a real tag, but it identifies what is going on better rather than let misunderstanding prevail. If you have <rant></rant> surrounding your material, then people know how to treat the material.

That other gibberish, though (not the [this] [/that] tags) bugs me.  I'm fine with the handy abbreviations lol and imho, but that other stuff reminds me of my thirteen year old little sister and I'd like to keep as far from that as possible.  Instead of making communication easier I find I have to decode stuff written like that and it's just more trouble than it is cool (if one was given to think it was cool in the first place.)  Maybe if I immersed myself in it it would start to make more sense, but I'm not going to do that.

People who go on AIM with me are often amused by how I type in full sentences, with capitalization and punctuation, even when no one else does.  Occupational hazard, I suppose.

Feels a little like walking with a cane and top hat through a crowd of people in pajamas, no?
