Title: Warmachine
Post by: Mr_Pleasington on September 11, 2003, 10:26:28 PM
Well, I finally picked up this game after months of debating whether to actually try another minis game. See, I absolutely love Privateer Press' Iron Kingdoms as a game setting and I think the books they've put out are some of the best d20 book on the market.  So I finally broke down and bought the rules after lurking on their forum for a long time.

I shouldn't have waited so long.  This game is great.  For months I've heard people rave about this game, nary hearing any dissention, and now I understand why.  It's fast, its brutal, its strategic, and it is fun.  And cheap to boot.

A lot of the folks mad at GW's gouging have hopped on board and the game has continually grown from its inception last decemberish.

I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and write a review of this one, folks.

Really I didn't like war machine at Origins, I find I like railwars better.

But you shoud do a review of it for TWG...

Oh by the way have you seen the ads for 50 fathoms from pinnacle?

Well, The Great Rail Wars got usurped by Savage Worlds anyway, but that 's beside the point.

I've followed everything about Savage Worlds since the design worlds were posted so I'm pretty plugged into the releases.  I look forward to 50 Fathoms, but it certainly wasn't worth waiting for it to come out to start the game.  I mentioned it in one of the early detail posts...or perhaps in the posts about the new game in the Alternate Realms forum.

Anyhoo,  too bad you didn't like Warmachine.  This is the best mini  game I've encountered since the ill-fated VOR.  Man, I loved VOR.

Personally, i have decided to go and investigate all the options in historical wargaming. That means DBA folks.

This could get messy.

Well folks, I managed to play a few games of Warmachine this weekend and I am blown away.  It just ousted VOR for my favorite miniature game.

Gameplay was quick, brutal, and very strategic.  We just played with what comes in the boxed set and had an absolute blast.  Very deep, exteremly well balanced... I just can't say enough good stuff about this game.

I can't wait for the League to start up here!

What? What is this you speak of? I've never heard of this Warmachine.

What section is this in? Right, tabletop. Therefore, its a tabletop game, which you have never previously commented on, and as such it is not surprising you have not heard of it. Case closed. Search around on google for them, i used to have the link but lost it.

/me waves a wand and resurrects an old thread

Color me wrong, Warmachine is cool, very cool, I just never liked the Armies I saw.

Until I saw Khador that is. Russki like guys ruled by an Ice Queen (of sorts) with blood red steam mech's that look like they could crush every other mech in the game in their metallic talons  , great coated and fuzzy hatted snipers, and insane infantry with explosive pikes for close combat steam powered infantry suits. And the freaking game is cheap cheap cheap, compared to GW that is.

I just got a unit of Widowmakers and my Khador Battlegroup is on its way... and so is christmas and a birthday...

I may be painting minis untill New Years...

what faction do you play mr P.

oh, I think it bears mentioning that Warmachines miniatures are on the tall side of 30mm scale (as opposed to GW's 28mm scale) The sculpts a great, and have a lot of detail. Units can be bought in packs, or by themselves and they are generally cheaper than GW,... in the end though you will 1/2 as many figures on the board as you would in say a 40 k game, but those figures will be bigger and nicer to look at, with more options when it comes to game play. The bad side is that once you have x number of units there isn't a lot of variety in miniatures. You cant buy specials with points and just say oh yeah, my Ironfangs have flameguns.

Play order bugs me too, and is something I would change to a card draw every turn just to randomize it.

Warmachines coolest miniatures,... well like I said Im partial to the Khador army (the russki's) It was their Widowmaker snipers and Warjacks that did it, ... well and Sorcha the warcaster with her huge scythe.

The Cryx have some really vile undead mini's and the Menoth faction has some cool looking Warjacks, but the main goodguy faction Cygnar looks,... well goofy.

Anyhow I bought a unit of Widowmakers and plan to get a Khador box set soon. (2 heavy warjacks and Sorcha.)

I figure I can play Carl at the very least...
To victory!

I might, I was also thinking about getting either the Magnus Mercenary battlegroup with a boomhowler and company box set (trolls in kilts with guns) or the Protector of Menoth Battlegroup boxed set with a box of holy zealots.

Your always good with Zealots... :)

I submitted my review yesterday...did you get it?

I actually have had several armies.  STarted with Khador and then sold them.  Now I have a large Cryx army with a little Cygnar

Sold Khador?!!! But Khador has Sorcha!

Yes, well I was using her as a crutch.  See, back in the day, before her feat was nerfed, I used her feat to assasinate enemy warcasters.  It was kind of cheap, but kind of fun.  I ended up getting rid of her b/c I wanted to play Cryx.

I actually did fairly well in the league I was in with Khador. Now, this was before most of the infantry got out so the game has changed a lot.  For instance, Widowmakers weren't out yet.  But neither were Bile Thralls.

I can honestly say I dont think I'll ever play cryx... a little too gross for me.

They're fun, but tricky to play.  Most normal tactics don't work well for them.

I've seen some great armies though.  One of the toughest I faced in early days was the "West Coast Offense" with a billion bonejacks.  That was rough.  Spells arcing in from everywhere.

When those were released at GenCon last year a few people brought them home.  We were pretty much in awe.  I've actually yet to see them in play though.

Theres a hobby town near my home that has just about everything Warmachine, I picked up a complimentary 2004 miniature catalog and am circling the figures I want as we speak...

I also really like the new Khador warjack, with the grenade launcher and the huge overlapping plate armor.

When I opened up Escalation and started reading some of the stats and special abilities, I was a bit taken aback.  Escalation is right!

I'm a bit jealous because I'm not overly enthusiastic about the two new Cryx helljacks and I like what the other armies got.

I like the Devestator Warjack,... and the Menoth "jacks" are just brutal....

So any tactics you want to discuss...

Wow, maybe I should have my eyes checked  ;)

As for tactics, you can't go wrong as a beginning player to head over to PP's forums and head to the tactic section.  Each faction has a compiled list of combos and strategies that should get any commander thinking about what to use and how.

Khador has changed so much since I played them that I don't think I can offer much in the way of advice.  Just get lots of MoW and IFP.  IFP weren't out when I played, but MoW frickin' rule!  They are incredibly hard to kill when in Shield Wall.  Other players hate them, and wisely so.

Heres a small collection of links to pictures of the miniatures, including a few that are coming out soon... Warning the Cryx one might be too much for sensitive gamers

er... ick... tasty sure isnt the word I'd use...

If I played the Cryx I'd probably concentrate on Skarre and the Satraxis raiders, with a few helljacks and many bonejacks...

I actually had an army designed around Satysix raiders and Skarre...basically it was all about backlash.  I never got around to putting it together though.  Those models are pretty tough to put together (dang horns) and none of them have the undead ability.  IT's a good idea, but it's just not worth it.

Plus, I love McThralls too much

Picture Albert Einstein ripped with muscles, decked out in silvery and bronze magical armor carrying a large glowing pole-arm that crackles with the energies of a thunderstorm. Thats my new favorite sculpt from Warmachine.

http://www.ikwarmachine.com/miniatures/nemo.html

His name is Adept Commander Sebastian Nemo, and he is a powerful (no pun intended) Warcaster, who when paired with the devastating Stormclad just rocks my socks off.
http://www.ikwarmachine.com/miniatures/previews/cygnar_stormclad_preview.html

Sorcha will always have a place in my heart, but Nemo gives me the reason I've been needing to buy those Arcane Gun Mages, and Stormblade units.

Whew, I spent all day and night painting Warmachine miniatures...

3 of em

for those of you not in the know thats a lot of metal... a lot.

I finished Sorcha and a Juggernaut Warjack, and Adept Commander Nemo.

Well actually Nemo isnt quite done, I plan to buy some glow in the dark acrylic paint for his glowing electrical parts. But he's done enough for now...

Sorcha looks good,... and I just smeared a few spots of mithril silver to give the warjack that needs a paint touchup because its been in the filed look...

Nemo however is a cool figure, super cool and Im psyched that I got him, too bad almost all the cygnar Warjacks look lame, except the Stormclad that is.

So after much backbreaking labor I have finished painting a slew of  Warmachine Minis. They wait only to be photographed so you can view them...

I think when I get another box set assembled, I'll do a demo table and photograph a game for a review....

The Mini's I have painted so far...
Commander Sorsha, Khador Warcaster, Juggernaut Warjack, Destroyer Warjack, Unit of Widowmakers, Commandant Irusk Khador Warcaster

Adept Commander Nemo Cygnar Warcaster.

and waiting to be finished....

Goreshade Cryx Warcaster...
Kodiak Warjack
Devastator Warjack

Still dont have a Camera, but with the exception of my Devastator I have all my Warjacks assembled...

The Devastator is a multiple stage build, you have to assemble the Torso, and legs first like the other jacks, then the arms which are 3 separate parts as opposed to just the one that other Khador Jacks and there are the arm guards and a boiler for the back that you cant put on until after you paint. So its painting the torso and legs... the arms, the arm guards, and boiler tomorrow when I get up....

Very involved...

Still I like Khador its a well cast army, and 1/2 as complex as Cygnar.

The Cygnar jacks all have an odd ball and socket style arm join which definitely wont hold up to table play without pinning. Sure this makes poses look better since players can choose a huge variety of poses. Still  even though the Khador socket offers far less range of motion its deeper and its sturdier without as much work.

I like my Kodiak too, I painted it a nice GW Catchacan Green with Gore red highlights (its a more purple red) and brass and silver metal bits.
It has a snow covered base that Im going to add a touch of blue ink to, and looks great next to my Commandant Irrusk mini. The Devastator will have a similar green color with red arms. Basically I was going for a cold war Soviet look that really seems to go with Irrusk's uniform.
I may have to add some Catachacan to my unit of Widowmakers,... Im not entirely satisfied with the reddish battle dress I gave them. even if they are mostly leather colored. Red seems a little bright for a unit of snipers. Sorscha and her Warjacks will stay bright red, because I see her as a more flamboyant and less modern character than Irrusk. All my future Khador units will probably have a greenish or olive drab battle uniform with blood or gore red uniform badges.

When I get the chance I plan on getting a few squads of Winter Guard instead of the Iron Fanged Pikemen so favored by Khador players. Dec is also the month of Winter Guard Mortar teams and I intend to get at least two of these bad boys. I plan to augment my winter Guard with some Greylords and Man of War minis.  I may get another Kodiak or I might get a Berserker just to scare my opponents.

The Khador berserker is a cheap heavy Warjack, but super unpredictable, throwing focus into its cortex is a good war to get it to explode too... making it a very expensive bomb, still one good explosion could take out a warcaster, or equally important unit after a few rounds of HTH...

Im also considering a blitskrieg option, strategy wise. Where I field 3 destroyers or a ton of Man of Wars.  The idea is to psych the enemy out by just having a lot of lead on the table.  (Kind of the reason behind my 3 Winterguard Squad idea)
Title: Re: Warmachine

Well it was a cruddy weekend for painting, way to humid yesterday to put on a second thin coat of primer on my devestator. I did repaint my Widowmakers to fit the new color scheme. Then I went down to games parlor and got a squad of Winterguard for about 20 bucks.

I was also able to start my table (its a demo version) 2'x2' with an icy river running through the center (counts as rough terrain, and jacks slammed into it have a chance of shutting down as they break through the ice. Im making two bridges, and I got a lot of snow covered pine trees. Mixed with the barbed wire from a plastic western cowboys and indians toy set and baking powder snow the half thats complete looks pretty good.
