Everything Else / TWG-East: The Gathering
« on: October 05, 2006, 11:27:18 AM »
A gathering/part/bruhaha has been proposed by a namelss personage (Shrain) for those of us on the East Coast.

To my knowledge, that would be Jeffe, me, Oseleon, Shrain, and Gemm. Plus, probably several of the newer people.

The DC region has been proposed as a central-ish location, being north of those in the southern Virginia area, and south of those in the NY or Boston areas. Perhaps it is farther from those locations, but a more exact center would put us somewhere near Philadelphia, and nobody wants that.

I am now soliciting interest and willingness to attend such an event, proposed changes to the location, suggested activities, and date availability. Halloween sounds like a cool time for Timewasters, though perhaps a nearby weekend would be more appropriate.

as for activities, movie watching, collaborative (or just jam) writing, Magic, board games (i have many interesting variations on Risk, plus Age of Mythology and Attack! and Settlers of Catan), roleplaying, Clix, Pirates, card games (I have cool games such as Nanofictionary, Fluxx, and The Totally Insane Card Game), monument/museum visiting, and excessive snack food consumption are all acceptable to me. It is even possible for me to get together several computers for a LAN party, though these computers will be roughly 4-5 years old, so the brand new games wouldn't be fun. Jeffe has an XBox (for which I can get free rental games from work) but I don't want to volunteer that until he says he could make it available.

So, speak to me East Coasters. Even if I didn't mention you by name, speak up. It's a party, which means more people = good.

S.N.E.A.K.S. / Old Data (ignore) Rules and Conventions
« on: October 04, 2006, 02:56:01 PM »
NOTE: this post will change as I am able to get data typed up.

I have changed the rules set: we will be using Ova. Since most of your are beginners, and this is a pretty basic system that I want to try out and I think will be more intuitive, allowing you to take greater part in your character creation.

Here is a free handout listing hte core abilities and weaknesses that can be applied to characters. It's only two pages.

Core Concepts: you roll two standard, six-sided dice, plus any additional dice that may apply due to circumstances or other relevant skills. Doubles are added together. The highest number you get is the result, which you hope is higher than the target difficulty.
ie, if you are trying to scare some information out of a guard, and your score in Intimidate were 2, you would roll four dice -- You roll the four dice and get 2, 6, 4 and 4. YOu get to add the doubles, and so your results are 2, 6, and 8. 8 is the best score you got. Since this is a grunt guard, I decide it only took a 4 to beat him. He's trying desperately not to vacate his bowels, you scared him so bad.

Character creation:
Choose any number of abilities to be ones important to your character concept. Rank these 1-3 (three is really really good, and most characters will only start with one ability at this level, if any). The total number of ranks you assign should be less than 5. However this is off set by weaknesses
Weaknesses are assigned the same way as abilities, but they *subtract* from your ability total. Thus if you have a 1 in intimidate, a 1 in fighting, 2 in strong, and 1 in hobby (collects knives) and 1 in quick, you have a total of 6. However, you've also got a 1 in bad reputation, so this brings the total back down to 5. You have a legal character.
No matter how many weaknesses you take, your total abilities should *not* be higher than 10

Races: The most common races in this world are described in the setting thread anything in addition to these listed can be approved on a case by case basis.
General descriptions of these will be made available soon. Feel free to add in new race ideas, just run them by me first.

Magic: magic item availability and cost will be roughly based on the rules in the DMG, but will not be automatic. Some will be cheaper (offered in the company store) and others will be more expensive and less available.

You may create your own first level character and submit it to me for approval. Or you may come up with a character concept, and I'll make stats up for you.

S.N.E.A.K.S. / Setting
« on: October 04, 2006, 02:34:57 PM »
In the year 2115, a new company was formed: S.N.E.A.K.S. -- Security Network Enforcement And Killing Services.

Organized by the elves, who still act as the company executives, the company was formed to provide a system most dungeon creators had overlooked: testing the dungeon for security holes (and the occassional removal of a particular rival). Now, Vampires, kings, Liches, dragons, and other "boss monsters" could pay a reasonable fee to have a team of crack investigators find the problems with the traps, henchmen, alarms, and other obstacles they had put into place. For business reasons, and at the prompting of the halflings running the marketing department, the S.N.E.A.K.S. maintains a strict neutrality policy. They do not check the alignment of any potential client, though they do reserve the right to refuse any contract they do not wish to take on (elves are picky about working for "ooze" type monsters, for example). In addition, there is a guarantee against investigator looting.

S.N.E.A.K.S. has been wildly successful in the last half-decade, commanding a near monopoly on their type of services. Though recently, a competitor has emerged: Orc Co. He-Man jokes aside, Orc Co has managed to bully it's way into a serious threat to S.N.E.A.K.S.'s revenue stream. Founded by the mysterious Head Honcho, Orc Co uses brute force and numbers to measure the effectiveness of targetted facilities.

You are a recent S.N.E.A.K.S. recruit (it appears their best team was recently ... disabled... during an investigation for a cannibal Balor Lord's dungeon). Full of enthusiasm, you hope to make a great impression on your bosses and make a great deal of money in the security game.

Music / Napster is free again

for a limited time. Seven days, to be exact.

However, I have a fast connection, and I can download a lot in seven days.

Of course, it's all wma format, but hey, free music legit. I can deal with that.

I'm trying to make sure I understand crypt() and I think I've got my head around it, so here's a listtle sample code and I want to know if it'll work

Code: [Select]
session_start();
$link = mysql_connect('server','user','pass')
       or die('Could not connect: '.mysql_error());
       mysql_select_db('database') or die('Could not select database');

$uname=$_POST['user'];
$get_use_pass=mysql_query("SELECT pass FROM user_table WHERE name=$uname LIMIT 1");
if (!$get_use_pass) { print 'use/pass does not exist'; }
list($saved_pass)=mysql_fetch_array($get_use_pass);
$pass=crypt($_POST['pass'],$saved_pass);
if ($pass == $saved_pass) {
       print 'password accepted';
       $_SESSION['user'] = $uname;
} else {
       print 'use/pass does not exist';
}

(color coded version at http://pastebin.com/790608 if you want to wait for them, they're very slow sometimes).

This assumes there is saved user data with an already encrypted password in the database, of course. Is that code written properly

Writing Group / New Group Members for AS and AS2
« on: September 15, 2006, 11:35:33 AM »
Apparently, there was some confusion.

Robert was told there were too many people.

Group volumes have changed, and I personally think that 5 submitting members works.

My only demand is that you *must* be able to commit to showing up regularly. If you do not, you are taking up space for someone who can contribute. You also *must* show up for other people. These rules are non-negotiable.

Thus, I think we can open up the slots. However, I need input from other members of each group before accepting new members is final.

I *do* think, however, that a group should be able to privately meet and decide *if* they will accept a new member, which they can reject on any basis, and need not explain themselves (we are ineffible).
