Movies and TV / Serenity - spoiler free impressions
« on: June 24, 2005, 01:45:26 PM »
Last night I was lucky enough to go to one of the pre-screenings of Serenity.

I'm still in a little bit of awe.  Them movie flat-out rocks!  Sure, I'm a huge Firefly fan so I might be biased, but this is one of the best movies I've seen in the last few years.

I also think they did a good job of bringing those who haven't seen the series up to speed.  If you've watched the series you'll appreciate the movie all the more, but it certainly isn't a requirement...just a recommendation.

So you've got a little time until September 30.  My advice is to go out and watch the original series.  Even if you don't fall in love, Serenity is still chock full of sci-fi action with far fewer plot holes than either RotS or Batman Begins and you should still go see it.

You can't stop the signal.

Everything Else / Ah!  Need Computer Help Fast!
« on: June 13, 2005, 04:15:31 PM »
Sigh.

How does this stuff happen.

I turn off my computer on Friday with absolutely no problems and come back Sunday to find that it will not connect to the wireless network set up in the house.  A friend brings a laptop and we confirm there is a signal up there.  My computer can detect the networks, but will not connect.  We try everything we can think of with now luck.

So I uninstalled the wireless card drivers and  then reinstalled them to find that I could connect again.  Yeah.

Except that now, about every 2 hours, I get THE BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH.  It reports the following:

STOP: 0x0000008E (0x0000005, 0x804ECD33, 0xF2BA7784, 0x000000)

When I restart I have the problem of not being able to connect to the internet again and can solve it the same way, with the same (blue screen) result.

This is driving me crazy...help, please!

Oh, and I should note that the first blue screen I got had the BAD_POOL_ERROR as its error, the rest have had the above.

A movie about a superhero high school?

Probably a trite coming of age story, given the preview, but the effects look fun.

Anyone else caught the preview yet.

Plus Kurt Russel and Bruce Campbell, two of my favorite B-movie actors.

If you didn't already know, don't see it.

It is excellent in its mediocrity.

I think Adam Sandler has forgotten how to be funny.  Happy Gilmore was the last really fun movie he was in.  Big Daddy was okay, but nothing spectacular.

And let's not forget that the movie tries to get you to root for the bad guys.  The convicts.  The murderers, rapists, and thieves.  I started to give in and root for them before I realized just exactly what was going on.

Boo.  Hiss.

You've heard me raving about the novels, now there's a sourcebook out for Savage Worlds, written by the author of the novels himself.

I'm downloading now, so I can't comment, but I will.

The latest book in the series is helping me keep my mind off the worst of things, too.

Everything Else / Something Terrible and a Request
« on: May 23, 2005, 01:01:52 AM »
My graduation party was on the 22nd.  Big affair, lots of people and lots of fun.

My sister, who is four years younger than me, was helping my grandmother get the parking brake unstuck from her minivan which was on a hill.  Something went wrong and my sister ended up pinned between the minivan and the floor of the woods at the bottom of the hill. Fortunately, many of my family are volunteer fireman/EMTs and as such there was a crew of skilled care workers right on hand.

She was taken to the local hospital where we learned she had fractured her tenth lumbar vertebre.  She was airlifted to Barnes hospital in St. Louis, which is near where I live.

We found out the bad news soon after that.  Two of her vertebrae were 100% dislocated, sheering the spinal cord.  It is mostly, if not all, severed.  We won't know for sure until rehab starts, but she'll most likely never walk again.

She goes into surgery tomorrow to fuse the spine so she can sit upright.  It's a seven hour surgery and she may need another after that.  Then we'll know how bad the damage really is.

For those who haven't met her, my sister is near-saintlike.  She lives to serve others. She's been on countless mission trips to other countries and spends her summers working for Campus Crusade for Christ.  She has the deepest faith of anyone I have ever met and that's one of the things that is getting her through this.  She's the strongest person I know.

She's also a very active young lady.  She loves playing all types of sports, hiking, backpacking, biking, and pretty much anything that keeps her active.  While she is pursuing a nursing degree, she's always longed to coach volleyball.  Knowing that she may not be able to participate in her passions breaks my heart as I type this.

We have a tight community in my hometown and the outpouring of support has been nothing less than amazing.   People are bending over backwards to make our lives as easy as possible as we spend days in the hospital.  Right now there are hundreds, if not thousands, of people praying for my sister now.  I know we have over 30 churches involved.  This support is what she is drawing strength from.

That's why we need more.  If you pray, please keep my sister Jessi in your thoughts in prayers.  If you don't pray, please send some good vibes her way.  She needs all the help she can get right now.

Also, my grandma was slightly injured but is doing fine other than her misplaced guilt on blaming herself for what was a complete accident.  My grandpa, her husband, has a very bad heart and does not deal well with this kind of news which led to him being admitted to the hospital on the same night as my sister and grandma and his weak heart started to act up.  Both grandma and grandpa are physically fine now, but emotionally distraut. Please keep them in your prayers too.

Thanks to all of you in advance.

Role-Playing Games / Secret of Zir'an
« on: May 19, 2005, 04:39:48 AM »
My interest was piqued a few months ago when I heard mention of this game being published through Arthaus (a division of White Wolf) and it finally got released.

Being a game addict, I bought the pdf.

It's a complicated game.  Not for newbies, for sure.  Complicated and complex, but also very well done.  I'm very impressed with it and no game has captured my imagination as this has since I read Deadlands back in the late 90's.

That said, I'm still trying to wrap my head around parts of it.

The system is very cool, allowing for success levels to have a dramatic effect on the game.  The setting is even cooler.  It's a strange mix of pulp, fantasy, noir, and bits of anime.

Character creation is a lifepath system and one of the best I've seen.  You start off with a base age and origin and then buy skill packages that cost a number of years and give you options of skills to take.  For example, you could take a military package for a few years, get captured and take the prisoner package, and then take the life of hedonism package once your character is released.  When you get done with character creation your character will have a pretty deep history. This has been done in other games, but the system is done almost to perfection in SoZ.

In a lot of ways it reminds me of the Final Fantasy games, particularly 6 (3) and 7.  That's a compliment, by the way.

I'll have a review in a bit, after I finish Ashes of Middenheim, but I've got to say that this game has a lot of potential and I think there are several of you guys who will find this as imaginatively-captivating as I have.

Role-Playing Games / Star Wars Help!
« on: May 16, 2005, 05:44:57 PM »
For a yet-undisclosed special project which I'll submit here if I ever finish it, I need some help by those who have kept up with the details of recent Star Wars films.  Here's what I need:

Names, armaments, and basic armor and speed details of all vehicles...mainly ground...from Episodes I, II, and possibly III.

Different types of troopers for the major factions.  For example, what exactly is an ARC trooper?

Any other details you can give me about the fighting forces of the Seperatists and Republic.

Thanks!

Video Games / Warning Forever
« on: May 10, 2005, 01:31:32 AM »
Apparently this game has been around for some time but I just got turned on to it.  It's a great little time-waster.

http://www18.big.or.jp/~hikoza/Prod/

You have infinite lives, but limited time to blow up an enemy that gets progressively harder.  Every death takes time off the clock.  Every time you kill your enemy time is added.

I'm hooked.

Table-Top Games / Epic 40K:  Conversion to Hexes and Counters
« on: May 08, 2005, 08:22:53 PM »
So I've been browsing through the Living Rulebooks at the Specialist Games site. Between playing Dawn of War, looking at current GW prices, and reading the Epic rules...I want to play Epic.

But I don't want to pay anything.

So I look at my resources. Namely, a good imagination and a lot of Heroscape terrain. Browsing the Epic rules, it looks like a conversion to hexes and counters wouldn't be all to difficult. The main change, besides ranges, that I think would need to be fiddled with is unit sizes. Bump the 5-man standard squad up to 10 men. The rules impact would be low and I think it makes the scale work a bit better.

Any thoughts on this? Has anyone actually attempted this before I begin?

Role-Playing Games / That Which We Must Not Speak Of
« on: April 09, 2005, 11:58:33 PM »
Shhhhhh.

Keep your heads down and keep it to a whisper folks.  I wouldn't want KS's internet enforcers to overhear.

I love the Rifts setting.  Great concept.

I despise the Palladium system and all it stands for.  Tried it many times and I just can't stand it.

Most of you love Rifts.

Many of my friends love Rifts too (while tolerating the setting.)  I asked a friend of mine a couple weeks ago how he could possibly put up with Rifts' system.  He replied, "Oh, none of us can stand the system.  That's why we do very little combat. Rifts has made us better role-players because we all hate combat so much.  It all works out."

Anyway, so I'm pretty darn good at conversions of things to Savage Worlds.  With Necessary Evil out, my ability to do this has only grown.  Problem is, my Rifts books are miles away and I can't remember the details of some of the more setting specific OCC's, like Juicers.  And equipment lists and the like.  I'm hoping to remedy this, actually, by going to get said books in a few weeks.

Anyone interested in helping out?  I guarantee you it will be worth the effort.  I'm fairly confident I can accurately convert most things, I'll just need some playtesting if folks are interested.

This conversion could never be posted or exist anywhere but on our computers due to Palladium's strict conversion policy.

Just some rambling thoughts.
