Movies and TV / What Movie should I rent?
« on: March 12, 2004, 11:13:01 AM »
I need a movie to rent for this weekend. Brenna and her husband recommended Secondhand Lions, but I realized it would be good to have some backup ideas in case they're out.

Music / Shake it, (or don't)
« on: March 08, 2004, 12:18:59 PM »
Hey, this is kind of like Eric's "animal songs" thread.  I want to put together a mix cd of good, old-fashioned, booty-shakin' songs.  Well not so old fashioned probably, but you get the idea.

Something along the lines of Sean Paul's "Get Busy" and the Black Eyed Peas' "Hey Mama".

Everything Else / Internet Dating

I know, some of you are looking at this and thinking, what's a married chick doing posting a topic like this?

My mom is in her mid 50's and single.  She's been divorced for... oh, 15+ years now I think.  She told me that she's decided to try one of the LDS singles websites out there in an effort to meet the right guy.

It just got me to thinking about the idea in general. What are everyone's opinions of such websites?

Books / Stacer, recommend a book to me
« on: February 28, 2004, 09:21:12 PM »
I'm going literature-stiri-crazy.  I need a good chick fantasy book to read.  Of course if Brenna or MoD has a suggestions, please let me know.  Young adult is fine, if it's not too young, and adult is fine.  Any good high fantasy aimed at a female audience.  Something in another world.

Books / "Identifying" with fiction
« on: February 24, 2004, 11:45:13 PM »
Ok.  You people have read lots and lots, just as I have, and I want to bring up this subject that came up in my contemporary american lit class.

Is identifying with the books you read a bad thing?  My professor says it is.  He says it's "dangerous".  Now just to be clear, (because it took us a while), he's talking about the identifying you do as a kid/teenager.  The example he gave was when he was 12 he read "Catcher in the Rye" and he said it took him 2 weeks to get back to "normal" in his thinking, because he got so caught up in the book.

Identifying- as he defines it- includes such things as putting yourself into the book in your mind.  Now I got kind of upset about this.  I had many happy hours in my childhood imagining I was a character in my favorite books.  And to be honest, I still do it.  The books I love the most, that I ADORE, I think about that way.  Sometimes it might be for just 5 minutes, like with something like Elantris.

So my questions are:
1.) Does anyone else still do this, even for a minute?
2.) Do you agree with my professor that it's dangerous and should not be done?

Hey, I thought it might be nice to have this list too.  What contemporary science-fiction is in the must read category?

Movies and TV / cool commercials
« on: February 02, 2004, 02:50:35 PM »
I think we're all willing to admit there are commercials out there that outscore any TV show on the air.  So post about 'em here.  I was talking to my mom about it last night, and couldn't really come up with much, except for the coffee-creamer commercial with Wayne Brady in it.

Movies and TV / Bringing Up Baby
« on: January 18, 2004, 05:44:34 PM »
What would I do without TCM?  Anyone else seen this movie?  (Aimed at stacer, Brenna, and MoD, since guys seem not to watch old Cary Grant movies without female coercion.)

This movie rocks - is it really not available on DVD?

(I want a leopard!)

Movies and TV / Teen Titans
« on: January 17, 2004, 04:23:11 PM »
I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I really like this show.  And it's more than just the catchy J-pop theme, which I can sing to amuse my husband.  I'm watching an ep right now where one character accidentally goes forward into the future, and thereby messes up the Titans by being gone.

It's amusing because I well remember identical episodes from other cartoons, including Superman and Batman.  And Darkwing Duck, (which was a really good one).   And all I can think is, "It's comforting to know that they're recycling these old plots so that kids today will get to see them too."

Is that dumb, or do you agree?

Everything Else / amusing typos
« on: January 16, 2004, 03:04:28 PM »
I don't know about you guys, but when i get tired, my typing goes to heck.  I thought it would be fun to have a thread to post our own or other peoples, (but mostly our own) typos.

Like the time I tried to go to eee.wbay.com

or just now, while I'm trying to do my homework quickly so I can grab a snack before my next class, and I typed foodnotes instead of footnotes.

Movies and TV / "The Great Dictator"
« on: January 14, 2004, 01:41:41 AM »
TCM is showing Charlie Chaplin's "The Great Dictator" tonight.

Oh. My. Goodness.   This is the funniest movie I have seen in years.   Mr. Chaplin was a genius!  He must be rolling over in his grave at all the tripe they pass off as comedy these days...

Does anyone in Utah have an English copy that they'd lend me? Like,  oh, Sprig?  I'd just like to play it in english once so I can understand the dialouge.

Everything Else / I don't know what I should do
« on: January 09, 2004, 03:20:00 PM »
Ok, here's the scoop.  I'm taking 18 credits this semester- something I've never ever done before, and I'm worried about it.

I wouldn't worry so much, but it is my last semester, (big papers, big projects) and on top of that I'm going to also get a part-time job this semester because we need the money.  I keep looking at my transcript and thinking, "dang it, it's only this editing minor that's keeping me here and with an 18 credit load.  I have until next Friday to drop any classes, and i'm seriously considering it.

I need your opinions.  I feel so burnt out on school, and just want to be done.  Will having an editing minor actually help me out in the real world, or will it just look pretty on a transcript that no one will ever see?  Should I drop my Elang 330 class, my Elang 421 class, or both?  (If I had to drop one, it would be Elang 421, which is a new program and therefore is worth crap because it doesn't have the kinks worked out....)  But it would mean sacrificing the editing minor.  At this point I don't care, I just want to graduate and leave Utah, and be able to have some free time to breathe this semester.

Help?   Especially from stacer, and other BYU grads who are into editing.... help?
