Title: server downtime
Post by: Tage on March 04, 2004, 06:13:20 PM
For those who check the forums more often than the main page, this is a reminder that TWG will be down for a short while (hopefully an hour or less) tomorrow, March 5.

So does that mean the poll will be returning...?

Any time estimate, as to save me from wondering and lack of TWG shudders?

Morningish. Probably. If I'm not busy. The poll may indeed be returning, if Fell even wants to do it anymore.

Oh man, that does say "Morningish" doesn't it? I thought it said Mormonish or something like that.

Well, he could have been referring to Mormon Standard Time. But he wasn't.

If we get poll functionality back, we'll definitely be getting the poll back.

Geez you guys actually look at the time? And I thought I was obsessive compulsive...

As an interesting side note, I tried to get on via FTP today so that I could change the 'in the corner' item, and instead of the TWG, I found a bunch of my short stories.  (The ones I had previously had Tage upload to his server for safe keeping.)  None of my novels were there, only the short stories.

Anyway, that was amusing.  However, it does make it a little bit difficult for me to alter the forum....

the ISP address changed EUOL so you'll need to get all the new info.  You're still logging into the old server.

Aw, that makes me sad.  I can't post my desktop.

you can still log in useing the filemanager in the admin section.  Same user/password as your forum login.  You can then upload through that.

Anyway if you didn't see my other post, call me if you want to go out and eat.

uhm.... Tage. The poll still has problems. IT's let me vote 3 times. And I've no doubt it'll let me vote more if I desire.

Post by: Spriggan on March 05, 2004, 03:48:28 PM
dosen't do that for me, I can only vote once.  Probaly has something to do with how your works server assigns ISPs

I'm not going to make it, Sprig.  I still have two papers to grade.  So, if you want to go out to eat, we'll have to do it tomorrow.  I think Micah wants to game in the morning, though.

all I know is that if I go to it, go to a different page, then come back, it lets me vote again. interestingly, if I vote, then hit the back arrow, it shows it again too. That to me, says soemthing with caching.

then it's a problem with your PC.

maybe, but I thought it recorded the IP address so that you couldn't vote again. That's a server response. This means that both my cache AND that the IP address is changing within a page load or two. I don't buy that.

If you talked to him yesterday, then that's probably right.  I haven't talked to him about it in a few days.
Title: Re: server downtime
Post by: Tage on March 05, 2004, 04:40:22 PM
I'll look at the poll. I stopped it from logging IPs a while before it got shut down, so that people in the same household could all vote. We might have to go back to that, though.

And EUOL, your user directory changed. I'll change it back in a bit.

No worries.  Though it won't let me into the file manager either....

I think the clock got screwed up.  My page says it's 6:07pm, when it's acutally 11:07 AM!

Tage's aware of the time problem

The default time is GMT, and he forgot to change it.

wow only a few days and allready massive problems.  Like not being able to connect to the site, and the DB going down.  Hope that's Tage's doing.

Yeah, I'm still seeing the mySQL error stuff too.

Wow, what happened to the front page?  All types of errors are coming up on it.  How come it has problems while the forums are fine?
Title: Re: server downtime
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on March 08, 2004, 11:02:32 AM
The forums are YaBB Gold 1.1, which don't use the SQL database (at least, the 4 I've installed never did). The front page and the articles and all the rest of the content are stored in an SQL database. Something happened with that.

Somehow the user db for mysql was wiped out. That really worries me. Either someone got access to it, or there are big issues with mysql on this server type. I can only wait and see if it happens again.

Well I'll have to look at what you're doing sometime, unless you can give me more specific information. Sounds like it's just not letting you log in.

When I log in from different terminals on campus, I'm tempted to vote  each time to skew the results.  But I figure that's just silly, so I don't.
