Brandon Sanderson / Re: I finally converted someone!

It depends of friends. We are very similar with my BF and this is perfect. However, Brandon's writing is contagious. I have several friends asking all the time for new books of Brandon, he's really popular in POland.

Well, I've done it quite efficiently, since my BF wants to join the forum and tell Brandon personally how he likes his books.  Yesterday we traded forum addresses - this one against Sean Connery's :D

He loves Elantris and longs for a sequel. Now he reads Mistborn (translated by me :D) and I sent him Warbreaker by e-mail :D

I'm positively stunned.
What a book!

I'll call my editor today, I have to translate it!

Yesterday I've almost missed my station, a friemd woke me up just in time :D
And today I think I'll finish the book reading it onscreen in my office - this is more than a book, this is exactly my line of handling the story - everything as I like it.

Thank you very much! This begins to make sense :) I'll go for  "Final Emperor"

We have another problem, but I'll try to explain it by e-mail.

"Lord Ruler" is just my attempt to use something more distinctive than the generic titles, like emperor. However, it is intended to mean the same thing. It's not really a double meaning; it's just a title.

Thank you very much! I'll try to make something of it... [scratching my head very hard!] because in Polish the meaning of Lord and Ruler are just the same or very similar and it looks like a pleonasm (to give you an idea how it looks, it's like Mister Ruler).

Well, seems a good place to ask a question. Translating question.
Several names are double-meaning (Ham, Breeze etc.) I have a problem with Lord Ruler. Is Ruler a "ruler" (I mean just a title) or yet another double meaning name? I cannot gather it from text so far.

Oh yes, I do! :D The only problem I have are the key names. Mistborn in Polish has to be expressed in two words, so unless I make any combination I'm afraid I'll have to use some licentia translatica ;)

Cheetaur, so I was close enough with cheetah, just missed the other part.

My nick is stolen from my former boyfriend, who proved to be a very stupid liar. It had a sentimental value for me, even if it's rather masculine,  until I found out... Now I'm thinking about changing it and don't now if it is possible.  :/

Anyway, to get back to the topic, I never expected the language of Mistborn be so smooth and easy to translate. Maybe it's that after Elantris I've become familiar with the style or something, but it's wonderful.

Yes, and what a relief to me! I must remember to mail a copy to you. From Elantris, I've got only the file, because all the free copies I got with the contract were positively snatched from under my very nose "yeah, you'll get it back some time!", but I'll save a copy of Mistborn for you :)

Well, I'm just a bit shocked. My boyfriend's beloved Grandmother passed away this morning.  I feel shattered.

I was asked by my friends to transmit yet more compliments on Elantris. Sci-fi forums are ringing with praises :) I don't feel up to translate everything, but they already ask about other books of the same Author.

Seems also like a good place to tell about my luck. Yesterday someone stole my laptop case from my office. Not a big news, Sith happens ;) but the problem was I had a copy of Mistborn in it. I am halfway through the translation and lo! they stole probably the only copy in Poland. I wrote a panicked e-mail to Mr Sanderson asking about any electronic version - the deadline is close and I've spent a sleepless night on it. And today I've found (not exactly me, but a colleague of mine) the contents of my case dumped in the men's WC on another floor. And Mistborn with it :D Poor devil of a thief he thought there was a laptop in the case  :D I don't use laptops but the cases are mostly both elegant and functional.

Anyway it seems the Force is with me and with Polish version of Mistborn.

And Cheetaur for me looks like a combination of cheetah and Minotaur. A very dangerous combination :D

Well, Mistborn arrived on Friday, after some pulling and pushing from my side. I get to work as soon as I finish a very boring Vaukesha job :) .

Wish me luck ;)

And by the way - Elantris become very popular among my friends. I made a gift of one copy to our president of the company, I hope he will like it - he's a great fantasy fan.

Well, sometimes I had a bit of trouble with Seons and their gender, this sort of things, or something was unclear to me. Everything is OK, though, I solved them, but still I can encounter similar ones with Mistborn.

When I was working with Star Wars series, this kind of problems was very frequent. For example in English when you say "Ashe said" or "Ashe floated" the gender doesn't matter until you have to say "his" or "he". In Polish the gender is applied to all adjectives, to verbs in simple past and so on, thus you must know the gender from the very beginning, at the moment of appearance of the person.  So if I pop up with a question "XXX is a boy or a girl?" please don't laugh at me and don't ban me.

But anyway, Elantris was a delight also for translation :), you cannot imagine what mistakes authors are doing sometimes - a person departs in X-wing and lands in B-wing, a male general becomes female in the middle of the book and so on, and Elantris was a revelation for me, because besides being really good as a story, it was also extremely well and carefully written.

EUOL will you be selling rights for the Hope of Elantris and the maps and so on you mentioned? If the book catches in Poland, there will be many people asking about such things.

This time I found the right topic, I think. What was this about corrupting children? My boy is 14 today and he is also deep in Star Wars (since he was three!), Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and all other things, but well... I'd rather like to see him anywhere on the playground, picking fights and so on.  The problem is, he's rather permenently grounded with music, keyboard and PC with samplers, sound processors etc. and it's really hard to get him out from his room.

When I was working with Elantris he often came to read what I had on the screen and I think he will read the book even if he's not a great reader, because his comments were rather enthusiastic. He loves magic and adventure, too.

Anyway when it comes to becoming hooked, or grounded, or stunned,  I have first comments from Polish readers (mostly my friends who bought the book rather out of curiosity) and they involve forgotten dinner in the stove, passed train or bus stations, reading till morning and so on :)

I'm trying to gather my thoughts to make a decent post but still there is too much left unsaid.
