Writing Group / Re: Chapter Length
« on: February 19, 2009, 12:23:15 AM »
I'll cast my vote on the 'regular chapter length' side of the house.  I kind of like it when I have a decent idea how long it will be until the next break.  Long or short doesn't really matter to me but the regularity does, a little.  Not a make or break proposition.

I find in my own work that the chapters average from 2K to 6K.  Big spread I know but, hey...

Dude, that's just cool.  I love the way you managed to convey the feeling of saggy skin and wrinkles with simple, broad, suggestive brush-strokes.

It reminds of all those cool book covers from the 60s and 70s that my Dad had on the bookshelves when I was growing up.

Reading Excuses / Re: Swear words, what to use.
« on: February 05, 2009, 06:58:47 PM »
Interesting discussion, even the off-topic bits.

I'm in the middle of a MiltarySF/AdventureSF novel and this swearing business is really causing me a headache.  I've served in the military so I can tell you that many/most military folks swear, a lot.  At the same time, swear words in a real world military setting carry a very different impact and meaning than the same words in a civilian setting.  I want my kids and my mother-in-law to be able to read my books without being offended so I try to leave out the swear words.  But when I write dialogue, a soldier who has just decided to disobey orders and risk his life to accomplish the mission does not say "darn" or "shoot".

From what I've read here I think I may have to put a bit more thought into creating new swear words that are grounded in the culture of my world so that those who want to hear "shoot" can and those who want to hear "f#$@" can too.

Thanks Mking!  I can't wait to try those out.

Thanks for all your comments.  They're all really encouraging and I really appreciate it.

Reaves: Yeah, I can only agree, needs more texture. Not sure how to go about it, but I'll figure it out eventually.  So much to learn!

Ookla:  Good eye on the head versus feet thing.  You're right. I think a layer got misplaced, I'll have to check.

happyman: Yeah, I opened it at work and it was way darker than on my home machine.  Looks like I'll have to fiddle with that monitor.

Vatdoro:  Thanks, man!

Hey all.  Gotta say i love this thread.  You all inspire me to keep plugging away.  Nice work.

I finally finished another Mistborn pic.  This time I was a little more ambitious and learned a ton more in the process.  For your consideration:

Click to embiggen.

As always, I'd love to know what you think of it.

I don't think so.  In my experience there has always been a stigma against reading books.

I know that I get funny looks and questions about how I take care of my children when I mention how much I read.  Implying that there are better ways of using my time than reading.  I figure my children will be the engineers and doctors and maybe even lawyers of tomorrow and then they will know why reading was more important to me.

You got it.  I live in a new house.  I haven't bothered to buy either cable or an antenna for the ol Boob tube.  My four kids have better things to do with their time.

As for e-books, in my opinion, that revolution has already arrived.  My wife got me an ipod touch for Christmas.  First app I downloaded was Stanza which is a reader that hooks directly into things like project Gutenberg.  I've already read three books on it.  It is awesome.

Rants and Stuff / Re: For Brandon - Religion (Potentially sensitive)

Awwww, I think it's kind of fun when ill-informed anti-mormons try to hurt other people's faith in Christ using blatantly and obviously false statements.

It's almost as fun as when well informed anti-mormons do it but that's, unfortunately, not what's going on here.

Pre Earth Life: "5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations."

Quote
First of all why would GOD show this to one person instead of a multitude? The accounts of Jesus Christ are written by multiple witnesses. Any error would be corrected by those who witnessed Jesus' resurrection.

First, you're reasoning about why God would not reveal himself to only one person eliminates quite a few prophets, including Moses.  And second, God has spoken to me, personally, through the spirit, testifying of the truth of JOSEPH Smith's revelations and teachings, as well as to the truth of the Book of Mormon and the status of the modern day prophets of our church.  The same is true of many millions of Mormons, so he HAS revealed the truth to multitudes. If you'll take the time to research the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, you'll also discover that Angels and Christ himself appeared to more people than Joseph Smith during the early years of the church.

Quote
So how does a single person born about 2000 years afterward  have the right to change GOD's word? Since GOD is all knowing why would he change it?

This statement seems to imply that you don't know about the council of Nicaea 1 and 2, both of which changed what is considered "the word of God" today.  Beyond that it also implies that you are unaware that the New Testament itself was not assembled into a coherent book until hundreds of years after the events described.  And then, of course, we have this:

Paul on the road to Damascus
Acts 9:7 "And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man."
Acts 22:9 "And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me."

Quote
Life is not about good works. It is only through trust in Jesus that we are saved.
James 2:
"17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? "

And then there's the following combination:
John 17:3
"3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. "
1 John 2:4
"4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. "

All this comes down to one concept.  Blind faith in any creed or doctrine is not what God wants from us.  What he wants is for us to come to him as best we can.  Pray to him, seek truth, and obey the promptings of his spirit and you'll be fine in the next life.  If the promptings of God's spirit really direct you to attack other Christians over points of doctrine, more power to you, have at.

I have been authorized to reveal that Hoid is, in fact, a connection to a being known in some circles as "Noid" or "The Noid."

Books / Re: New Hitchhiker's Guide books

I must say I'm not optimistic.

The good thing about the HHGG books had nothing to do with the world and everything to do with the voice of the writer.  Although, bringing everyone back from the dead, just because he could, is something I can totally see Adams doing.

Meh, I doubt anyone can duplicate his voice with enough fidelity and natural flow to make it worth it.

Rants and Stuff / Re: Election Day!
« on: November 05, 2008, 05:40:28 AM »
Scare tactics are scare tactics.  I'm just afraid Obama will do all those things he said he would.
  • Raise taxes even more on businesses. That means I'll probably get laid off because my company won't be able to afford me anymore.
  • Regulate the financial markets just like the Dems did before, forcing and then encouraging Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac to make bad loans until they melted down taking the rest of the economy with them.
  • Pull out of Iraq willy nilly, leaving the Iraqi people to the tender mercies of Al Quaeda, Iran and Jihadists everywhere in the name of political expedience.
  • Institute a National Healthcare system so the doctors and insurance will function just like all the other bureaucracies, answering to no one but their distant masters in Washington.  Innovation in the field will come to a screeching halt.
  • Dole out cash in the form of "tax refunds" to those who didn't pay taxes in the first place, teaching even more people dependence on the government teat.
  • Institute the "Fairness Doctrine" in the name of getting "both sides" of every issue heard while at the same time holding the sole power to decide what those sides are.
  • The list goes on...

There were plenty of scare tactics on both sides. Easy to discern and separate.  I'm scared of what Obama said plainly he was planning to do. It remains to be seen what he held back.
