Brandon Sanderson / Re: For the Crew: Elmandr's Bet *SPOILERS*
« on: October 22, 2008, 09:32:16 PM »
Wait, we all assumed that the mist spirit was apart of the mist--its in the name. When people fell randomly, who did this? the mist alone? Or was it the mist spirit alone? none. it was both. This  happened because the mist spirit is essentially apart of the mist. Your thoughts are different from you actions but they are apart of a whole.

It is wrong to say it now--since we can distinct the differences, however its seems rather strict and arrogant to argue that i should have known the difference before hand.

when i said mist spirit i meant the mist. i only refer ed to the mist spirit because it was the face of the entity. When Vin first merged with the mist was the mist spirit around? No. And yet that is the key reasons behind why i thought they would merge.

so when i say the mist spirit to refer to the mist--it should be overlooked because their was no indication of a separate role in them before hand. All that matters is that they are pieces of the same thing. One was the arm, the other the leg. yet both were apart of the whole.

Is it right to say preservation died? no, it isn't. It just lost its consciousness. Almost in a vegetative state. the body functions still.

Why i thought they would combine is a whole different matter. many people have come up with theories and most did not attempt to explain. Those how did usually we wrong. i was right that they would combine--but wrong on why...but was that really a part of the deal?

Take for instance Squire Chaos, he gloated the other day about guessing that Ruin would want the Atium Cache. And i applause the feat. However, he did not attempt to explain. Leaving his theory broad and open for interpretation. The more detailed you get the tighter the room is for what is correct.

So, trying to say that i am wrong because she combined for a different reason is true. But i am not wrong when it comes down to what we bet--which is what would happen--but wrong in why. And that is a topic and discusion of its own.

Perhaps there could be a way to set up the Zazzle and send the royalties to Brandon through the Paypal donation thing on his website. The way that Zazzle stuff works is that Zazzle gets the majority of the money, and then the creator gets a 10% royalty (it's possible to increase that royalty amount, but that increases the cost to the shirt). I don't really even care about money and would be happy to give the full amount of the royalties to Brandon--just one more way to support him, which I am all for!

If not that (because that seems rather complicated to get the royalties to Brandon), Brandon or Jordan should really think about making a Zazzle thing themselves, because it doesn't seem too difficult to do.

I know I'd want some of those shirts :D

Lol, i think we would have alot of fun with that...

Books / Re: What books did you grow up on?
« on: October 22, 2008, 04:45:24 PM »
Oh, well, i should first say that, the only reason i started to read was because i was always grounded. For one reason or another. So it started off as a way to kill time. Then books like The Last Unicorn happened, and The Series of Unfortunate Events and Goosebumps. Oh, and there was...drat i don't remember--just know that the main characters would turn into animals. Not animorphs though... I'm not sure i want to remember. I also read Captain Underpants. And loved it as a kid. And loved it still as a man. Yes, i am a man. I came late into fantasy with the Inheritance Cycle. As i teen though i read more Neil Gaiman then anything else. I did read some classical fantasy with Mcaffery and Brooks's Sword of Shannara trilogy and even The Hobbit. These led me to more modern books and authors like The Name of the Wind and this Guy named Brandon Sanderson--not sure if you've heard of him...Anyway.

I wasn't sure how far back the question asked me to go. I guess i could say that the first CHARACTERS in a book that i actually loved and appreciated as real people, and not just names in a story, are those in The Series of Unfortunate Events. That could very well have been the work of fiction that compelled me to write. However, i'm not sure.

Friday then.  8). Im cool as a cat on a window sill. Nothing for me t-t-t-o worry about.

I also was a huge fan of the ball scenes. I laughed out loud at least once in every ball in the trillogy. I was kind of sad that Well of Ascension didn't have a single ball...
Hero of Ages very much returned to the roots of the first book in a couple of ways, I loved the parts with Spook in Urteau, I loved the ball scene...

the well of ascension was a necessity. Though everyone seems to think it a harder read. Im not sure that HOA would have been palpable if WOA wasn't written the way it was...

99
I also wanted to say that I absolutely loved how Vin (and Elend, though I didn't relate to him that much in this aspect) finally managed to piece together her identity - that she could happily attend balls and dance away the night while playing polite politics one minute and then turn around and become a necessary assassin the next. It really struck a chord within myself since it's been something I've been struggling with myself recently (two disparate "personalities" not so much with the assassinating ;) ).  It's heartening to know that it is possible (and I don't think its something that I've come across a lot in the novels I've read)

Well that's just my two cents...

I really liked this part of the story as well. And I was very grateful for the ball scene. In my opinion it was one of the best in the book. They were one of the highlights of the first book, and I missed them in the second.

Also, my favorite line comes from that scene, where Vin gets a little huffy that some of the girls are fawning over Elend and makes that comment about how she'd loved Elend before he became dreamy.  ;D

that was very womanly of her. but i didn't buy the whole love portion of this book--everything else i liked very much.

Mistborn can't be over--the very ending is a beginning for a continuation. Think about it: a new world, a new god, no rulers, no laws.

You see, i think that Preservation and Ruin were merely lesser deities. How can we know this? well, we still don't know where the prophecies originated from. It couldn't have been from Ruin--because he wouldn't alter his own writing. Nor Preservation, because he would have the sense to write it in metal, or atleast know that writing the prophecies was pointless. Another thing, Ruin would have tried to kill or control Sazed, and Preservation would have confronted him in the shape of the mist spirit...they did not. I wonder if they even had a clue.

Perhaps they were the SonGods of a Father Deity. Perhaps just Gods of the world amongst other gods of other worlds. Or universes. I just don't believe they were the top most gods.

They might not have even been gods. Sazed said it himself. They were the two aspects that a god would have. So if they weren't god, and just powerful beings...who is God?

No, this is definitely not over.

Oops! almost forgot. Since Dear Vin did infact merge with the mist, i will be expecting my dubbing soon.

She merged with the mist, not the mist spirit. Said merging also has nothing to do with the mist spirit being previous HoAs like you thought, too, because the mist spirit is just Preservation.

Actually, Preservation did create the Prophecies. I asked Brandon who created the prophecies and he said:

Quote
3.  The Terris prophesies were created by Preservation before he attempted his imprisonment.  He knew that he wouldn't be able to do much for the world after he did what he did, and he foresaw a LOT of what was to come.

That being said, Ruin and Preservation are just Shards of Adonalsium, not Adonalsium itself. There are other shards.

Okay, but if Terr could foresee everything that would happen. doesn't that mean he knew that the world would undergo a thousand years of struggle and nearly crumble and end just to return to the way it was when created? Did he really not like Ruin that much? Or is there a something bigger in play? How far did he see? Did he realize that the world would need the powers of them both combined and knew that Ruin wouldn't provide his half. What is going to happen that would make it necessary for their to be a single god?

Really, i don't believe this is over. I think that again its just beginning. This part will be a historical reference just like Alendi and Rashek. What they did was the pinnacle for their destiny and the spark of a massive chain of events. Its far too open ended to be over...

I guess i just can't let go.

I was at work today at my college library, and we, the employees, had to step outside and go through a mandatory fire lesson. There was a trailer waiting for us at the parking lot. We entered it. The fireman told us the obvious--lay low, feel the door, get out stay out. You know.

To get to the point, the trailer emits smoke from the ground and walls, to show people what its like in an actual fire. He said that the smoke he was using wasn't poisonous and was also a bit lighter in color.

"...Like Mist."

Imagine me, sitting there, everyone saying "wow, thats pretty awesome..." and me saying..."Please don't choke me, please don't choke me, please don't choke me..."

lol.

"Sir you ok?" says the Fireman.

"huh?" i squinted. "holy crap, The mist spirit! Wow, i didn't imagine you with a gut. Or side burns for that matter..."
