Never read them, so I don't know if they're any good, but they're not related to her later books.
News:
"Magic is what makes fantasy fantastic," someone says, "you can't apply rules to them or else it loses wonder!" I respond, "Sure, but if you want to write them you will certainly want to know how they work." Writing is all about execution, and I find applying some basic laws of physics to magic systems make them more understandable and realistic. Here, I'm going to outline my basic method for developing a magic system.

Definitely Assassin's Apprentice.
All of her books (except the Soldier Son Trilogy) are tied together and it all starts with Assassin's Apprentice.

You should also check out Robin Hobb starting with The Farseer Trilogy. Those three are her first, and best, books.
The next two trilogies are set in the same world and are also very good (The Liveship Traders, and The Tawny Man).
