I saw this series on and off as a child when Nickelodeon decided to run it in the late 80s. I always thought it was really cool. I've only now remembered it that I'm teaching my 8th graders about the conquistadors and all that.
Has anyone else seen this cartoon?

Me and EUOL use to watch it all the time. It was done by some French animation company and was based off a novel or comic, again from France.

I remember the name and can almost picture some of the characters. The "villian" was a conquistador trying to find the City of Gold, right? And there were two kids--a boy and a girl--who knew more about the city then he did, right? Or maybe I'm off.
If you hadn't mentioned it, though, I probably wouldn't have remembered it.

Oh I remember it distinctly. There were 3 kids, one was an Incan boy or something. And they got to travel around in solid gold ships and flying machines shaped like an eagle. I've NO idea how anything made of solid gold goes ANYWHERE.

Wiki has a nice entry on the subject

I've been sitting here all morning trying to figure out what the heck this was, and then I realized that you said it was on Nickelodeon. No wonder. When you lived in the country back then, you didn't get anything but broadcast channels unless you had a huge satellite dish.

They ran it alternately with Belle and Sebastian. I remember the Exploits of Esteban and his friends fairly well. It was part of a good block of Nick shows. Dangermouse was on soon after, YCDTOT a little later, the third eye later than that and finally the tomorrow people. Those were the days.

Never heard of most of those, and never saw any of them. Weird.
