Books / Re: What not to read

After being overcome with obsession and locking myself into impossible circular arguments with others who have been likewise infected, I'd like to make another suggestion. Don't read this if you wish to have a life afterwards:

Harry Potter and the 0.5-Blood Prince by J.K. (Just Kidding? Jade Knight?) Rowling

It will invade your brain cells and make them lyse by the millions (assuming you're one who's got that many neurons).

Interesting.

I'm not quite sure if Quinn is the same kind of person, however. As far as I know (and I'm going off of just one book and the constant praise of an irrationally-Green English prof I had), he's just really really really concerned about humans being egocentric and depleting all of the earth's resources before we realize what we're doing...

Here's the Ishmael Community site, in case you have the time/desire to prove me wrong:
www.ishmael.com

The book comes highly recommended by high school students, it seems, and had I read it a year ago, it would have changed my life. But now that I'm no longer 18, I think very little of it.

I'm happy because this is the funniest thing I have seen all day. It left me shrieking in laughter...

I am back in Provo! And I got to hang out with MY douoche last night--for over four hours!!! It was great.  ;D

"Douoche" is a specifically female term. If your sweetheart happens to be male (which I fervently hope is the case, or else you should simply ignore this unnecessary post and I'll just hang my head in stupidity), it's "galant," which means what it sounds like.

That is a preposterous and unfitting question! How dare you think of such profound things to ask!

:-/... Erm, I really don't know the answer.

She does perform a lot, but that shouldn't have anything to do with winning Best Studio Vocalist or Best Contemporary Recording...

I think it has to do with all the random tracks that're out there, like she's on EFY about four times, things like that. She also gives out lots and lots and lots of sampler CDs.

Let's not forget that Dumbledore had said that Snape did something huge to prove his loyalty to the good side. I'm guessing that apologizing profusely for giving away the prophecy that killed James and Lily is NOT quite it.

Her CD's STILL not out, after about two years...

You should write her and beg for samplers. She'd love it.

I've only read a few chapters, but this was the book that inspired much insomnia due to contemplation of my future as a physicist... Proving God through science is a concept that's had me obsessed for months and now I've finally settled on becoming a bloody brain surgeon.  ;D

Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn

You have to accept the premise of a Bible-bashing conservationist ninety-year-old telepathic gorilla, for cryin' out loud.

The whole time I was convinced that Tonks had been under the Imperius curse. I mean, losing the ability to shift forms, having a new personality, having a different Patronus, and the fact that nobody was smart enough to suspect her... Or she may equally have been Malfoy under Polyjuice Potion disguise. They both had been growing really thin. One time she appeared behind Harry while he was trying to get into the Room of Requirement where Malfoy was. Anyway, she freaked me out everytime she appeared in the book (and she was everywhere this book). And when she dropped in at Hogwarts to talk to Dumbledore I was certain that she had killed him. So the fact that she confesses her undying love for Lupin at the end of the book is completely out of nowhere. Hinting and hinting and hinting and then inventing something totally different that does not relate to the hints and has not been hinted before... is bad writing, Dan Brown style.

Likewise, Madam Rosmerta did not make any significant appearance until we find out that she's been Imperiused and was behind all the murder attempts. When reading the book a second time, one would not be able to point to all the clues and say, "Ah, should have known," because there were none. I would much, much prefer Tonks being evil than all the trouble Rowling took to dig out of that hole.

It's too bad she also had to resort to a Malfoy-explains-all scene at the end to tie all the loose ends together. Granted, he may be one of the more believable characters for doing that sort of thing. But still.

Okay, for some reason this just finished off my day. I am no longer amused by anything. Grrr. That article made me quite cross. They're both really cocky and rude.

It's silly how Rowling can bring herself to believe that there is anything shockingly original at all in her world. Did she invent mermaids or centaurs or giants? And to claim not to have intended fantasy is a laughably poor attempt at something like false modesty on her part. (She was clearly JK...)

However, that Prat guy is a jerk to her about it.

As famous writers/public figures, they should both hold themselves more gracefully than all that. Neither side deserves to be taken. Bad choice of topic to write an article about.

Oh, and I LOVE HP6!

I also value the characters above most people I know in real life. I just finished the book, and I haven't cried so hard since yesterday when I realized what must happen.
