Title: Geek Girl #8
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on February 17, 2006, 09:13:10 AM

Naturally, there's something to it. Guys want to be knights, when it comes down to it. It's the Quijote complex. You can't be a knight if there's a guy being a jerk right there and you don't straighten him out.

Amusingly, in my wednesday group, the player who makes the most lewd jokes and is potentially disruptive because of it is the wife of the GM. She flirts outrageously with most of the NPC's, so having her husband the GM probably helps with that ;)

She never shuts up though. Even when her character isn't there...

Very heavy-duty column, MsFish. I agree, those guys couldn't call themselves knights if they didn't come to the rescue of the DID. But it seems like they took their sweet time, really. Makes me mad that they didn't cross swords with the guy much, much quicker...  >:(

At which point you'd probably have been whinging that they were just trying to look good in front of a girl. :P

Post by: Shrain on February 17, 2006, 05:23:30 PM
Nah, not me. Can't speak for MsFish, of course.

Personally, I'd just be happy to avoid some needless, crass harassment, no matter the ulterior motives of my rescuers. Some guys open doors for girls because they want to, others just feel obligated or hope to make a good impression. Imo, the door's been opened either way, and I appreciate that.

That's so the guy can fart before getting on without the woman smelling it.

It's really in case the elevator isnt there... apparently that used to be a big problem. :D

*sigh* Okay, so I've obviously ticked you off again, without meaning to in the least. :P [Insert colorful language of my own about how, apparently and much to my surprise, gargoyles are natural enemies of fish] Really, I was being a bit facetious in the comment that you're objecting to.

Yes, I wondered why the guys didn't do a little more than just glare or make laughing comments about your obvious avoidance of the guy's character during the actual game. BUT mainly this was just my frustration for your situation spilling over into exaggerated indignation. So I couldn't resist bagging on the Quijote wannabes a little.

If that makes me "ridiculous" somehow, shoot. Oh, well.  Is it because you don't think they could've acted any other way given the circumstances? Or that you didn't expect them to do any differently? If that's the case, I can understand your response. I mean, they didn't know you, after all. Anyhow, take it as you will, but I wasn't trying to be annoying or insulting, MsFish.

I think it's more it exposes your lack of a sense of humor when it comes to how people react to your articles.
Title: Re: Geek Girl #8
Post by: Shrain on February 19, 2006, 08:00:26 PM
Fish, I wasn't angry. Just taken aback by your reaction. (I felt like -you- were mad, though; that's what baffled me.) I count you as a friend and, well, I'm not in the habit of going around offending my friends. Somehow, I just don't find that very fun.

So I basically despaired of being able to figure out how my comment sparked this, is all. 'Cuz I'd like to keep you as a friend and even get to know you better.

I love your columns, and I'm sure a lot of people would be sad if you stopped writing them. Including me.

Hey, he posts again. With punctuation this time.

By the by, Fish, I don't think that Shrain meant to be offensive. I don't agree with her position, but it seems she was taking up for you more than anything. I certainly don't think this should be a reason for you to stop writing a column that everyone seems to enjoy so much. But, once again, I am a little insane, so I may be wrong.

ms fish for real, we like your articles and love the comments, we need more people like you and articles like this to show people that we are not wierd devil-worshiping geeks that lives in their sisters basement and have like no lives and no matters. I for one enjoy the thursday night games and i like that a actual women would hang out to play. I mean i didnt start playing until i got married and introduced to the game by a flyer in a comic store that i was finally able to get the courage to go into. Like everyone looks at me and the first thing they say is "you must be the first black guy i know who listens to hip-hop, plays basketball, and loves to watch football and play d&d and reads comics.  At first i would keep the fact i game or read comics hidden from people i date and people at work so they would not think i was "strange"[ but since i have been like hanging out at ive have met some of the best friends and people ive ever known. I check this sight everyday to get peoples reactions to stress of being a "normal geek". when i was in ny none of my friends gamed or read comics so it was really lonly going to the comic store by myself and not having anyone to relate and since i didnt look like a geek those kids in my school would were into gaming thought i was just one of those people who just wanted to make fun and they gave me the biggest like im better than you atitude(which was dumb since i was a foot taller and bigger and could beat the heck out of them but anyway.)so it was until ten years later that i actually got into gaming. So from hip-hop loving geek tahnks for you cool inspiring articles. And if people cant take that then that is their problem.....dang dirty orc-loving monsters.

Yeah, well, by "people," I meant me.  Lol.

Actually, I think Sprig's the one who hit it on the nose.  I don't take well to people criticising my friends.  Ever.  In any situation.  Even when they deserve it.

So I apologize for my reaction and will try to do better in the future.

And in Mockman's defense, he did have some punctuation in there.

I was being nice about it. I took into consideration the fact that mockman was a friend of Fish's and so I didn't try to scold or embarass him, I played it off as a joke. Beside that, I only posted twice, meaning that I wasn't a broken record, I just referred back to a single previous post. I really don't see how that is out of line.

This is our site, we set the rules, and typing as correctly as possible is one of them. We don't enforce this rule directly, but we tend to make brutal fun of people who don't do it. I've watched your back in the past because I've met you in real life, and I like you, and because you're a friend of MsFish, but the grace period is over. I've asked you politely, you've thrown it back in my face, and the back-watching ends here.

Mockman, the thing is, while there's a lot of gamers on this forum, there are also a lot of editors and writers.  So grammar is a must.  Or they'll crucify you.

On a slightly unrelated note though, this is a highly contentious thread.  I seem to be spawning all sorts of contention lately, and *I don't like it!*  That is all.
Title: Re: Geek Girl #8

I wouldn't worry about it, MsFish. If mockman wants to post on the forum, he was eventually going to encounter this problem. It just happened to be in this thread, because this was one of the first threads he posted in. In other words, you didn't cause this. Just because mockman is your friend, doesn't mean that you are responsible for his actions. Besides, it's really not that big a deal. Now, if you happen to start a world war, then we'll have to talk.  ;)

Title: Re: Geek Girl #8

Well, unless a dragon has some defense against heatseeking missiles fired from 30 miles away I'd say the F-16 wins.

Thats what i said, but my co-worker, jason, thinks that the dragon would fry the jet crispy. but i think heat-seekers would work against any damage reduction.

Title: Re: Geek Girl #8
Post by: Skar on February 22, 2006, 05:59:39 PM
This is an unsolvable dilemma until you define the dragon's capabilities.

We're familiar with F-16s so we have a pretty good idea of what they can do.  But until you figure out the abilities and limitations of the dragons you're dealing with to at least the same degree as you are familiar with the F-16's abilities and limitations you won't be able to come to a conclusion.

I mean, if we're talking about Smaug here I'm betting on the F-16.  But if we're dealing with Ouroboros I'm not so sure.

No. It isn't. Not in the modern Spanish, which is the way I originally read it. Don't try to correct the biggest Quijote fan.

I'm betting on the F-16. I believe the context was d20. Any typical dragon, unless you buff him up considerably, isn't going to win against an F-16. Even when you age him considerably. Great Wyrms are the best fliers, and they're still listed as "clumsy" which means, while an F-16 can't hover, it's going to outfly a dragon any day of the week, with its speed, it's unlikely a dragon would get any attack to connect, even if the F-16 does a flyby, which would be dumb. The only spell I can think of that would protect against the F-16 would be a Wall of Force. But to be large enough to cover one facing the Dragon would need to be 35th level (assuming the facing of 30ft applies to height as well as width. That leaves 5 other sides exposed. Assuming the dragon can cast that spell 6 times, doesn't that mean the dragon can't fly at all anyway? So, dragon still loses.

My vote is for technology.

unless the dragon has a SAM battery and good RADAR reception at his beck and call. I rather like that idea.

I may add it to a D20 Apocalypse game.
Title: Re: Geek Girl #8
Post by: Fellfrosch on February 23, 2006, 11:55:23 AM
If the dragon starts using that wall of force offensively, rather than defensively, he'll have a much better chance: just pop it up right in the F-16's path. That assumes you have some way of getting closer, however, so maybe Dimension Door? Teleport? You need to get close enough to the F-16 to zap it, without being seen, which is going to be very hard.
Title: Re: Geek Girl #8
Post by: Mad Dr Jeffe on February 23, 2006, 12:00:12 PM
teleport will make life tough for a heatseeking missile too. Oh, its over there now. Wall of fire could be used to great effect as a lure. Burning hotter than a living thing and all. Resistant Sphere could act as a sheild untill the missiles were all gone.Summon Swarm in the flight path of aforementioned F-16 could end a life quick.
Title: Re: Geek Girl #8
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on February 23, 2006, 12:17:18 PM
Teleport is the more likely, you'd have to be an exceptionally high level Wizard to cast Dimension Door and make it move you 30 miles.
And then, after you cast teleport, you've made your standard action. The F-16 gets a move action before you can cast another spell. I'm relatively certain that a Jet moving at Mach 1 will pretty much be out of even a 20th level Wizard's range for that wall of force (75 feet).
As for using teleport to avoid the missle, I suppose you could do that to avoid the missle. BUt how many times do you have it memorized? Even if you're a Sorcerer of 13th level or higher you only get 6 5th level spells (which, incidentally, is the same level as Wall of Force). And then, so... you've foiled the heat seaking missles. Now you're out of spells that will get you even close to the jet, and he's got bullets.
Title: Re: Geek Girl #8
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on February 23, 2006, 12:21:20 PM
I don't think the swarm will work, for the same reasons he won't get an attack in.
YOu have to get it in the path of the fighter, which you then have to predict.

You have to be a pretty darn high level wizard to get a Risilient Sphere large enough to fit a full grown dragon inside. the sphere is 1 foot in diameter for each caster level. So that means, what? 30th level?

I'm still voting for the fighter in this match up.
Title: Re: Geek Girl #8
Post by: Fellfrosch on February 23, 2006, 12:48:02 PM
The dragon flies around and makes some noise and gets the fighter's attention. Then it casts Ethereal Jaunt and disappears--it can't be detected on radar or thermal imaging of any kind, and the missiles fly through it. The pilot comes over to check it out, the dragon pops back into the real world (a free action) and summons a wall of force right in front of the jet. An F-16 doesn't have the manueverability to avoid it, and crashes and dies.
Title: Re: Geek Girl #8

Point to Dragon
Title: Re: Geek Girl #8
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on February 23, 2006, 01:15:13 PM
assuming the jet flies within range of the Wall of FOrce spell.

But then, this is a fight between a wizard and an F-16, because there's nothing about being a dragon that makes this his victory. If you can cast wall of force, you're high enough level to cast fly.

So, point to wizard, MAYBE (assuming that he flies that close), but that's without giving my jet pilot any class levels. If we can assume that ethereal voids radar detection, then we can assume that we've developed an ethereal detection device.
Title: Re: Geek Girl #8
Post by: Fellfrosch on February 23, 2006, 01:17:00 PM
I don't think we have to assume that radar can't detect a non-physical object. That's pretty much a fact.
Title: Re: Geek Girl #8
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on February 23, 2006, 01:18:19 PM
meh, it's still a wizard battle, not a dragon. In fact, a human wizard stands a better chance than a dragon, being much harder to target.
Title: Re: Geek Girl #8
Post by: Fellfrosch on February 23, 2006, 01:22:51 PM
That I will certainly grant you.

If I were a dragon, I'd just hide from the F-16 and go trash the airbase after he leaves.
Title: Re: Geek Girl #8
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on February 23, 2006, 01:24:34 PM
There's a strategy that makes sense.

BUt I still think money and technology would win.
The Ethereal Jaunt gambit would work exactly once (unless the other pilots in the air force are idiots -- shut up Army brats). Then they know not to fly that close, and work starts on Ethereal detection devices.
Title: Re: Geek Girl #8
Post by: mockman on February 23, 2006, 04:24:12 PM
In the d20 future they use sonar and satalite gps guided scatter shot missles. And speed is a factor, the fighter doesnt need to be close, it can fire all it weapons except guns a mile away. A wizard is still human so he still needs line of sight and know that the target is there.
Technology always beats magic.

Modern, as in the primary version of the Spanish language spoken on the Iberian peninsula.

Anyway, you'll be seeing Quijote very frequently, so cope.

The problem with "Quijote" is that we then get "quijotic" as an adjective, and that just looks weird.

Not to completely get off of getting back on topic...muddle that one out and I think it makes sense.

This was a fun article, MsFish, though I think you have more patience than I do.  It might have to do with me being slightly older, but a guy like your harasser gets about 5 minutes leeway before I would have talked to him myself in no uncertain terms.

I'm glad your co-players took steps.  That makes for a much more comfortable environment for everyone in the long run.

*chuckles*  Now, if your fear of gaming stores lurches back up I'll happily go wander with you.  I love walking in and having guys stare.  Went into Games People Play the other day and asked for Polyhedral dice.  It took about a minute and a half of the salesperson staring before he realized that yes I was talking to him, yes I knew what I was talking about and yes I was female.  It was hysterical.

If you're ever up in the SLC area Hastur's Hobbies is another fun venue to visit.  Decent stock and the folks that run it are nice.

Is a dragon that's not breathing fire even hot enough to register for a heat-seeking missile? They're tuned to seek out the engines of other fighters and I doubt the body of the average D&D dragon is that hot. Even if you turned up the sensitivity you'd be just as likely to hit the nearest large rock with the sun shining on it or somesuch.

I'm also going to vote for DR/magic applying in this case. However, given the damage of a missile or fighter-mounted cannon, I'm not sure it'd make much difference.

Being able to kill from 30 miles away is a good trick too, but in that scenario we're probably giving the fighter the advantage of spotters.

(Sorry JenaRae) To continue the dragon vs. jet debate, I think we need to further define our assumptions. What kind of missiles does the fighter have and how much/what type of damage do they do? What is a fighter pilot's bonus to hit with a guided missile? Does it have unlimited ammo/fuel? Because if we're going for "realism" here, the average jet will run out of missiles before a dragon runs out of spells, and will certainly run out of fuel before a dragon has to land.
So if the missiles do enough damage and hit often enough, then yes, the F-16 will win a quick fight. In a protracted fight, it doesn't stand a chance.
Oh, and a spell like displacement makes the dragon even more likely to survive until the fighter runs out of missiles, unless it's ruled that the guidance system has a true seeing effect.

I still maintain that since every tactic you've given the dragon to survive is spell casting, you're talking about a wizard taking on an F-16, not a Dragon.

If you're going realistic, then there's no way the dragon can fly. Since we're not doing that, it only takes a first level cleric spell to make the weapons temporarily magical, thus DR isn't a factor. I'm sure we can get the base chaplain out to take care of that.

We're going with AMRAM missles, since it has been definitively pointed out to me that the dragon is definitely not hot enough unless it's breathing fire. Apparently, there's also some time for the dragon to react, assuming that the dragon knows about the missle, which, in most cases, I'm goign to say no, not if the pilot is anything more than stupid.

bullets may be a factor, but fuel probably won't be.

then again, Pilots arent exactly trained on how to cope with a real dragon in flight school. I mean the shock of seeing a live on might just make a pilot do stupid things....

And dragons are unused to seeing mechanical things that can fly faster than a hasted quickling can run. If you want to factor that in, the dragon is going to have issues as well. Since the shock of bizarre opponent can't really be calculated, we should just assume they are equally shocked and eliminate it from the suppositions.

*le sigh* While my actions for that day were inexcusable, what people have failed to notice is that my behavior since then has changed. I must respectfully disagree with Ms. Fish's analysis of my motives. Is it so much of a stretch to think that, perhaps, I did in fact feel bad about what I had done and changed my behavior based on that? Does a change in behavior not partially make up for the fact that I was a complete jerk the first time I met her? Must we vilify someone who changes and shows remorse, albeit only after the fact?

I thought you were referring to Ms. Fish dating you a little. It was funny. As for vilifying, it was the forum posts I was referring to for the most part. However, upon further inspection, it wasn't that bad. My apologies.  :-[

Did Rob what's-his-name leave, then? And the English guy who sings? I knew quite a few people of color (not all African American) back when I was there through my black English roommate, Fiona, and the BSU. Still know a few via other channels, though Fiona has since moved to Salt Lake. People of color do stand out in a crowd in Provo, but they're not so uncommon as you might think. :)
