You know, Fish, the next time you have a Magic date I can loan you the deck of doom; you can use it to impress him or scare him off, whichever you prefer.
-
After all, a pretty, socially-competent Geek Girl is an Ioun stone in a bin of diamonds.
Nice comparison. And good luck on the dating scene.
As for our RPG group, I somehow have never actually regularly roleplayed in a group with less than 50% girls. I keep hearing this "girl roleplayers are almost unheard of" rumor, and yet so far I haven't had any personal experience to back it up.
-
I've never been in a group without girls, but the ratio is always around 4:1 for men to women, at least.
-
I have never been with a group of girl gamers really. Just my wife, she enjoys to play video games with me, or just on her own at times... that's about it, she won't play magic or anything. Although she'd consider it if everyone else was doing it.
-
In high school I was the only geek girl in the RPG group. Since college I've been in the same group and the girls almost always outnumber the guys, even as the group has fluxuated in membership over the years. It's a standing gag that our GM never needs sensitivity training because often he runs for an all female party and he knows exactly what will get him beaten upon. Currently we have 11 in our group with 5 men and 6 women. The pro of many women though...we eat really well. :)
Though I know the problem all too well Ms Fish. Even more challenging is when you get a little older and you're still trying to find dating opportunities in the geek gene pool.
-
When I said “geek” I did not mean “incapable of carrying on a conversation.” Try again.
No doubt. But that's part of the problem, isn't it? Especially when you get to be a certain age. (You're perceived to be approaching it because you live in Utah, but for no other reason. Were you living in Boston or California or something, you'd be the baby of the ward.) But the pool gets narrower and narrower.
Personally, I've decided to give up. Well, for one thing, I'm too sick right now to worry about anything besides getting myself to work. But also, I figure, it hasn't changed anything in the whatever years that I've been trying. I'm content to just try to have fun with my friends, and if it happens, it happens, but I'm not too confident it actually will. And yes, I mean dating, because it's been an even longer time since I've had any hope that any guy would last longer than two dates with me.
-
Leave it to a dating article to make half the females on the site depressed.
All I can say to you all is if EUOL can get married then anyone can.
-
Heck, even I got married.
I married a girl who played on one of those late night commercials about a telephone date line (not the bad kind).
-

I'm not depressed. Just being realistic. When it's hard enough to find friends where you live, it's unlikely you're going to date.
-
Just lower you standards. I'm sure there are hobos out here that would be happy to go to dinner with you. ;D
-
You could date Spriggan, after all.

I actually have a 9-5 job now so I'm one step above hobo.
-
Yeah, he's at least the king of the Hobo's now.
-
Good Article Janci.
-
Even so, it seems a miracle that two people, like minded or not, ever actually end up dating. So many things have to work out exactly right, or things just don’t happen.
True 'dat. I hate to be a killjoy, but everyone keep talking about how depressed they are please, and maybe it will make me feel better about my miserable excuse for a life.
-
O, woe is me! Alas and alack, the misery and horror and depression of it all! And the worst part is, I never learned to read!

Sadly I never learned how to write :(.
-
Whoot lev 2 hmm now how do you munchkin a forum. I'll take a few ranks in spelling and a rank in grammar now with my int modifier -3 sweet.
-
Mmm... Munchkin...
I do hope things go well for you Janci. I dont worry about dating in the same way someone over the age of 18 does, but I know how frustrating it can be to find a decent date.
-
Lol. I really WAS tired when I wrote this thing.
Actually, lately I'm glad I don't have a boyfriend. Because I don't know where I would find time for one. I'd have to stop doing things that I enjoy, and that would suck.
-

Well, boyfriends . . . even borrowed ones can come in handy when you go out to your car on a bright Easter morn to find a rusty nail in your new tire. :P Thankfully, my roomie's boyfriend was on hand to help me get the spare on!
As for dating, um, what's that? It doesn't help any that my roomie and her boyfriend are always over here or I tag along sometimes to go to IKEA or something. Doesn't do much for my ego, I gotta say.
I've decided to take my chances with my visiting teachee's talent for matchmaking. Come to find out, fifteen of the friends she's set up on dates have gotten hitched. :o No kiddin'. Might as well--she's already got two guys in mind for me... Sort of scary, actually.

"Rod of Wonder"? You make it too easy! Must resist!

I have to say I have reciently stumbled on this site, and instantly fell in LOVE with Geek Girl!
As a geek girl... I find everything in there completely relevant... especially the part of this recient article about once you date one geek guy all the rest know everything because they are ALL friends... haha!
Many times have I sat and read this while I was supposed to be writing a paper or something (curse the life of an english/theater major) and almost fallen out of my chair laughing!!
Keep up the fabulous work!!!!

Up north where I am.... there are very few gamer girls... I usually game with about 30 people on and off (more or less depending on the time of the year... it is a college town)... there are maybe 5 girls (more or less) out of that...

/me appoints Archon the official TWG greeter.
-
He does seem to do a lot of that, and it's awesome. My only complaint is that he doesn't use hyperlinks, they are so small! And neat.
-
Huh? I just posted two hyperlinks.
As for the position, it would be interesting if the official greeter and Master of Newbie Smackdown were the same person.
-
No, you used links. Hyperlinks are where you use a modified version to create a link with another name. FAQ (http://www.timewastersguide.com/boards/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=news;action=display;num=1080380396)
-
he meant where you hide the URL behind innocuous words, instead of just posting the URL. *shrug*

I would just like to say I enjoyed the Article very much. I can't say how much I love to her the opinions of female gamers (thier SO cute when they are angry). I came apon the Website here just last week and have really fallen in love with this place. I am very impressed. I now find myself here almost EVERYDAY at work, enjoying the gaming, the witty banter, and all the fun. Just thought I would drop you guys some props ;)
-
Welcome! be sure to introduce yourself in the Site News!!
...oh..wait.. sorry, Archon.

Hmmm... "They're really big in Ohio." What does this mean...
And what did I miss April 1
-
MS. Fish, our little superstar. Im so proud.
-
/me wipes a tear from his eye.
I knew she'd find a fan one day.
;D
jk, I love your writings, Fish!
I think the big in Ohio thing thing that E said is a play off of "I'm big in (some far away/exotic place)" phrase, which makes people think you are more popular than you really are.
http://www.cafepress.com/funny_t_shirts_.28985331
I could be off-base on that.. E will let us all know if I am. ;)
-
That's because you weren't here on April 1 ;D
Oy!!! Of course e would bring that up again. lol. /me rolls her eyes
-
Technically it was March 31.

consider this your first timewasting assignment. Search the forums for that date and see if you can find what went on.
-
That was one instance of it, though it began in the RPG thread. In short, we staged a huge fight between the two editors for April Fools' Day, to the delight of many and the raging wrath of two. I think they've forgiven us now, though. Maybe.
-
NO
-
Forgiven you just long enough for you to let your guard down so they can stab you in the face with a chopstick. A sharpened chopstick mind you.
-
Wow. I have fans. Go figure.
Incidentally, our new friend there has a name that rhymes with mine.
-
I don't really see how. MsFish and Yancetastic, how does that work? (I'm getting the feeling that I might just have a tin ear for peotry.)
-
LOL well she is FishTASTIC in my book ;D
-
Hahaha! That's punny!!
-
MsFish's real name is Janci, FMP.

AH! Janci... Yancey...
Now I follow ya... ;)

I know this thread has been quiet for a while... but I couldnt think of where else to share my lil story...
I had a geek girl classic moment... I discovered a brand new comic/game store a few days ago, and I decided to pop in when I drove by. My friend Jen was with me. We got out of the car, walked towards the door, which was glass, and as I reached out to open the door I noticed the only people in the store were 5 boys gathered around a tabletop game...
...Then... They all turned and stared at me... panic... I nearly ran my friend over racing back to the car...
BUT I am resolved... I will go back sometime this week... I will face my fear...
I am ok going into the two stores I know... with the gamers I know... but this new crowd set me in a panic
But Janci I will hold you as a role model! ;D
-
A role model, huh? Can I just tell you that I literally ran away from several game stores before I managed to go in one? I've STILL never managed to go into an unknown game store alone.
See A Geek Girl's Guide to Christmas Shopping, if you haven't already, for more information on said exploits.
But thanks! Go to your game store! Face your fear! After all, what can it hurt? (Besides your pride.)
-
BUT I am resolved... I will go back sometime this week... I will face my fear...
Good for you. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. Permit it to pass over you and through you. And when it has gone past, turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only you will remain.
-
And she's goign to give us more advice on Friday, right, Ms Fish? (Right?)
-
I cant wait for more advice
as an update, I told a gamer guy friend about that and he promised to run interference with me, mostly because he wants to check the new place out as well haha
-
Here's some advice from TLC: "Dating is awkward, but so is becoming a crazy cat lady."

-
To tell the truth I've become a tad bit of a parallel to JP, in the sense that I'm a drunkard. But I don't go around yelling at people I suppose. Which brings me to my next point: women.
I've just about hit the line where I'm going to just throw my hands up (with my arms in tow) and will only accustom myself with women from afar as some "creepy old dude." I'm sick and tired of the head games these women round here play with me and no longer have any interest in being a part of them. I'll wait a few more weeks until my friend comes back from basic to see if I still have anything left, but other than that I'm finished.
It may be like fish in a barrell but I'm shooting them with a nerf gun from 2 miles away.
-
Stop shooting at the Fish!
Ever think of trying a net? I hear those work better.
-
Yes, SE, there will be more on Friday. Course, I didn't get it written till Thursday....
I went different this week. Feedback much appreciated.
-
You don't have to worry about not getting them in till last minute. I never see nerderies till the last minute, and I never write Page 33s until the last minute has past.
-
Confusion say: If it wasn't for the last minute nothing would get done. :)
