Title: Pompeii!
Post by: Sminja on April 20, 2004, 09:14:42 PM
TFO and I are doing a project for school...we have to build a model of Pompeii. Now, we have already built the paper mache Mt. Vesuvius (soon to be "exploded", hehe), but does anyone have any suggestions for anything we could do?  Info on materials to use, info on Pompeii in general, etc. would all help.  ;D

Google Pompeii.  My sister just did this too and I helped her find info.  There are lots of sites that have info, maps, pictures and such.  Also if you google mount vesuvius you'll get a lot of info too.

Depending on how detailed you want to get this can get very expensive.  I remember makeing models in my High School aritecture class and we'd easly spend $50 on adverage a person.  I would allwase spend some of my cash for extra things, so I'd be in the rage of $80.

Paper machie would work nicely for Vesuvius, and for pompeii i'd use stryafome.  Not the stuff you'd get from packageing, but the modeling stuff.  Or Balsa wood.  You'll end up spending a lot for this project if you go either way.

Cheeply, I'd use carboard cutouts just get some from an artstore and draw the bulidings on it then cut them out and stand them up.

Thanks. Yeha, this could get expensive...I may be able to find stuff out of peoples recycling bins and such...but that's pushing it. All I know is that I'm not buying the rest of the stuff, because i already bought the vinegar and baking soda *coughmaxgetyourbuttoutandbuysomethingcough*

Put the gods on the volcano. It would look pretty cool to see Vulcan or Eros slide down the mountain.

And will Mr. Golden accept a project like that? I thought it had to be something a powerpoint, or a poster with info.

It should also have Oedipus taking out the Sphinx, and the  Calydonian Boar hunt.

Here's a little fun 'fact'
"Oedipus became king of Thebes, and unwittingly married his mother (Jocasta) and became father of their children."

Post by: Maxwell on April 20, 2004, 10:16:48 PM
one, it's caledonian, two  the boar hunt is nowhere near pompeii(if it's caledonian, its in scottland)

What I was talking about was near Rome, or Greece. And I spelled it's name correctly.

well we are doing a pompeii project not a rome or greece project.

The Calydonian Boar was sent by Artemis to punish King Oeneus for failing to honour her in sacrifice.

The giant, wild boar caused widespread damages and death to the rural region around Calydon. Oeneus asked for the heroes in Greece to hunt down the boar.

The important thing the guides there keep hammering into you is that contrary to public opinion Pompeii was not a massively wealthy urbs. Sure there were some wealthy people in it, but for the most part they just got by.  You can see this most evident in several of the temples which used brick covered in stucco for the columns and construction rather than marble. Still walking the city you find yourself amazed at roman engineering ability. The streets were narrow, and at almost every intersection there was a set of,... well stepping stones cut at just the right points to allow wagons to pass. The Baths are impressive and after thousands of years the frigidarium (cold room) was still cold (about 60 degrees or so on a hot 85 degree day). It also easy to get a feel for real roman life from the city, like several houses that had cool personal touches (Cave Canum-Beware of the dog). Keep in mind that the excavation of the site dates back to the 1800's and realize that before then the city was under rubble, and ash 20 to 40 feet thick. the weight of all that ash  collapsed the top floors of almost every 2 story building so you dont get the full impression of what the city looked like, but you get a good enough impression.... I'll see If I can dig up and scan a few pictures from my private collection for you.

You should use the Eyewitness acount of Pliny http://pompeii.virginia.edu/pliny.html

And these are some good pictures, but not by me so cite them correctly

step one: find topographical map and craft city out of that weird clay junk
step two: smack nick upside the head with the finished model
step three: turn in model.

Maybe we'll only do like half the city...or the main part of the city...did Pompeii have a forum (marketplace, etc.)?

howw bout we do the part closest to vesuvius seeing as we're putting the volcanoe right next to it.... jeeze sam think!

Vesuvius is kinda far for scale.
Do the Forum, its easy, or even better do a scale model of one of the intact houses.

UVA has some more great stuff for you...

I highly reccomend the quicktime panoramics....
Title: Re: Pompeii!
Post by: Maxwell on April 24, 2004, 10:27:45 PM
it's not to scale, we dont have that kind of patience for newspaper
Title: Re: Pompeii!
Post by: Sminja on April 27, 2004, 01:36:39 AM
Yay! We realized that Pompeii is much smaller than Vesuvius, thus reducing the amount of materials we need to make the city! I'm thinking we still need to make the Bay of Naples, though, that would be kind of cool...
Title: Re: Pompeii!
Post by: Mad Dr Jeffe on April 27, 2004, 07:00:03 AM
More importantly you need to make a Sarno river running into the bay.

heres how it looks in short ASCII

^=volcano
.= city
/=river

.^. ./       .

the first city is Herculaneum the second is Oplonto the third Pompeii and the fourth was Stabiae Sorrentum other citys affected were Sarno and Nuceria . Basically everything to the south and west of the volcano with the exception of Herulaneum were buried in 15-20 feet of volcanic ash in a period of 3 days.  It was recorded that the erruption was also accomponied by lightning, tidal waves and earthquakes and the sky was filled with black poison gasses.

Pompeii had about 20,000 citizens and there were no survivors. I make the distiction of citizens because the Romans were big slave owners, and it is unknown just how many people died in the disaster.

I'll see If I can find a real map, and If I cant I'll scan the one I do have...

Vesuvivus now is smooth, rounded with a little bobble cut out of the lip and a deep evil looking black ash and soot color I remember notes or red in it too. Back then it was green and pastoral, covered in farms, vineyards and luxury villas.

The erruption was the second of two terrible disasters that had hit Pompeii in a span of less than 20 years (the first being a horrific earthquake in 62 AD that levelled most of the city). This is why at the time of the erruption that Pompeii was not a particularly weathy city.

Post by: Sminja on April 28, 2004, 02:08:14 AM
That's really good info, thanks Jeff. Was Herculaneam the actual place where the lava flowed, so it got destroyed? I remember readig that...and all the ash went the other way to the other citites, which is why they are preserved. Correct me if I'm wrong, there.
Title: Re: Pompeii!
Post by: Mad Dr Jeffe on April 28, 2004, 08:19:15 AM
'yes and no, Herculaneum was technically destroyed by a pyroclastic flow *described by the US Geological Survey as "A ground-hugging avalanche of hot ash, pumice, rock fragments, and volcanic gas that rushes down the side of a volcano as fast as 100 km/hour or more. "

"The temperature within a pyroclastic flow may be greater than 500° C, sufficient to burn and carbonize wood. Once deposited, the ash, pumice, and rock fragments may deform (flatten) and weld together because of the intense heat and the weight of the overlying material"

Plus there was signifigant projecta from the cone when it blew, some ash did fall there. For a nice comparasin you guys should look into the explosion of Mt. Saint Helens which while more modern had a similar effect and erruption.

Dormant Volcano, structural defect in cone combined with massive pressure = explosion remember that Vesuvius was actually a little milder, but still bad.

The big killer in all of those places was poison gas.

The first map is a rough area of the bay including vesuvius and the major towns

The second is a modern day photo of the region from space

and the third is a photo from the 1944 Vesuvius erruption

Note how close Naples is to the volcano.

Max, I didn't "stiff" you on purpose...I couldn't get away from the uncrontrollable force that is my dad (he wanted to do something with me for my birthday, which was, by the way, today), and I did not have a swim meet. I had one yesterday, though, and I dropped 10 seconds on my 500m race! I'm happy...and I finished the Pompeii paper, by the way.

I'd argue that SE, I beleave more people think the Breakfast Club was the best teen movie from the 80's.  Both BC and say anything beat out somthing kind of wonderful on EW's list they did last year.

Say anything is very popular I think it was #1 on EW's list.

Anyway its more a choice of personal prefrence.  Mine is Better Off Dead.  "I want my $2!".  Ahh such a classic.

oh, and Say Anything is a great movie. It's just not, 80's teen in the traditional sense for the most part. It's kinda like, as they grew up, teen tastes matured. I think Say Anything (with a few exceptions, like the scene at the gas station) has more of an adult romance feel than most teen movies.
