One divine thread?
« on: June 07, 2010, 05:02:21 PM »
Ok ok ok. I'm sort of confused, but sort of not confused at what I've been reading through this site. It seems like there's this whole theme of Brandon's works being connected by one divine thread - that divine thread being Andolasium (I'm pretty sure that's not the correct spelling ... but hopefully it's close for you to figure out who I'm talking about) and his "Shards." Is this just speculation by the fans? Or is it true that Brandon Sanderson is going to turn into the awesome-est author in the world (well... he already is the most awesome author... but... more awesome then he is right now) by connecting everyone of his books by one divine cord?

Yes and No. Let me explain.. .No, there is too much. Let me sum up:

Most of his books happen in a universe known as the 'cosmere' which contains three realms: intellectual, spiritual, and physical. Notable exceptions include The Alcatraz Series and possibly Scribbler, though that is unpublished so far.

Anyway, There are at lest two things which are included in every series: Hoid and Shards. Hoid is a character who has grabbed a shard and can now planet-hop. The shards were all at one point, pieces or powers of a divine being known as Adonalsium.

Known Shards include Ruin, Preservation, and Endowment as well as three unnamed shards.

It is assumed the shards are each guided by a human consciousness.

Ohhhhh! That explains like SO much and makes the books SO much more cool!!! :D Thanks for explaining!

So, Elantris, Warbreaker, and Mistborn are all set in the 'cosmere' along with the Stormlight Archive? That is so cool!!! Oh my gosh, so awesome.

And, who is Endowment? I don't remember that name...

Endowment is one of the Shards in Elantris. It is suspected he is the power behind the Dor. He's actually not mentioned by name in book, but has been confirmed by Brandon Sanderson himself.

No, Endowment is the single Shard on Warbreaker's world. It is currently unknown what their Shard names are on Elantris, but if you read carefully in Way of Kings, you can find out what their human names are.

All Shards have had their power taken up by a human, by the way, as evidenced by Ruin and Preservation's bodies falling from the sky.

How is it that every time I think I've hit the peak of how excited I can be about Way of Kings and the Stormlight Archive, someone manages to give me some tidbit of information that pushes me further?

Was it ever confirmed that Hoid was grabbed a shard to do his planet hopping, or whatever he is doing?  I thought that was just speculation.
