Spook's Eastern Slang

I love the way Spook talks, even though most of the time I can't tell exactly what he said, so I decided as I read through the series this time, i'm going to post everything Spook says and translate it, roughly.


Thought ya'll might wanna learn some eastern slang as well.

anyway-- first spookspeak-

"You're wanted,"... "Ups in the where above with the doing. With Master Jumps to the third floor. Uh, I've gotta go."

basically, Kelsier wants you on the third floor. I've gotta go.

btw... if anyone has a better suggestion for these translations I'd love to hear.

Also... if someone wants to lay down the rules of Eastern slang, this is a good place to do it, eh?

second instance of spook speak

"Lestibournes."

"Not of the yetting yet."

first is his name, second means- not yet, or I don't have a nickname yet.

Third instance

"Wasing the place when I was young."

-I lived there when I was young, or something similar.

"Notting without the call of his parents."
"He wasing one, though."
"Ironeyes. Others stopped using it. Too calling close to an iron in the real eyes, eh? Inquisitor."

-Not that his parents called him ...or something.
-He had one, though.

"Big man. Robe."

Ok, I have no idea what out in the night with the calling could really mean. The rest is pretty straightforward, though.

-You're waking up.

"Notting as the now," ... "Kelsier wasing the the hit with my name; changed it to Spook."

-Not anymore, Kelsier didn't like my name, he changed it to Spook.

"Two weeks," .."Wait here."

'Course "You're awaking!" is just good English, not slang.

You know, in the spoilers thread EUOL did give a very short explanation of how the lang works.  I'll see if I can find it and post it when I get home.

sounds good,  I read it, but I still wanted to find every instance of Spookspeak I could.

next one-

"Wasing with the Dox to come and be without the stay."

-Dox and I came to visit.

"Weapons for the getting, giving for the time to be."

-this one is clarified by Spook himself- "We needed the drop off some more weapons, " ... "Storing them here for a while."

actually, i think there's a typo contained in there. 'needed the drop' should be 'needed to drop.' I'll check the typo thread, see if i need to add it.

It will definatly be useful to try and decode the lang.  If I remember the next time he does a signing and I'm at it, I'll ask him to try and teach me a little bit better.

well, i lent my 2 copies of mistborn out for at least 10 days, so it may be a while before i can finish this. But, hey! Other people should read these books so I can talk about them.

Yeah, you guys are almost unbearably wrong, if you're referring to Eastern US. We don't talk anything like that. If this Spook guy is, he's either mentally handicapped or screwing with you - I pick the latter.

EDIT: Well, I will say this - we do talk funny some of the time, and even I'm guilty of starting off sentences EXACTLY as follows: "Yeah, uh, so, like..." which, due to the way I speak (unlike Eastern accent), comes out as "Yehuh, s'like..." It's hilarious when I catch myself.

Spook talks to Bel-whatsit about it, explains that "wasing" goes at the front of a sentence, though I see above that a subject can precede it.  I would be interested in learning more, if anyone finds the Q&A.
