Well, they started doing Honorable Mentions. Have you heard anything yet, Cynic?

The fact that they're coming so late doesn't surprise me at all.  After their 25th anniversary Gala, and the holidays, things were bound to be this way.

My name's not in this first bunch of HMs.  Haven't heard anything yet either.

Got my entry in for next quarter by the skin of my nose.

Started my next entry over the Christmas break, but first I have to bang out an unrelated one-scener that jumped into my head over the break as well.  Both should be good.  Going for a humorous entry this quarter, and I'm hesitant but excited about it.  Have read that it's easy to make people cry with your story, but hard to make them laugh.  Believe that was Vonnegut I read it from.  Going to give it a good try anyhow.

My story got rejected :(.  No honorable mention, runner up, nothing.  Got the email yesterday.

Ah well.  I need to get back to writing.  I've been on "vacation" for awhile.  I'm puttering around, looking for a new project.  We'll see what pops up.

Boo. That sucks. But hey, the next thing will be better!

So, question.  Would you be open to letting me have a read-through of this story?  I'm curious.  :)

Definitely keep going.  Write as much as you can.  I've found that the more I write, the more my brain works to produce material that I can write about.  Just keep at it.

So.  I sent off a story to Weird Tales (edited by Ann VanderMeer), and she sent be back an email passing on the story.  However.  She did really like the story and the writing--it just didn't fit with what they were putting in their releases.  She asked me to write and send her another story that had other certain qualities in it.  There are no guarantees (obviously), but when someone like Ann VanderMeer says, "send me something asap" you get cracking...and you feel good about yourself and your writing.

Hey, that's the best kind of rejection letter. Write!
All Saiyuki fans should check out Dazzle! Emotionally wrenching action-adventure and quirky humor! (At least read chapter 6 and tell me if you're not hooked.) Volume 10 out now!

Whoa.   :o

Congrats, Steve!

My curiosity lead me over to their website.  Don't know if I've ever come across them before, although the name VanderMeer certainly rings a few bells.

I wrote this short story a while ago and never knew where I could send it.  It's just a bit...odd.  :)  Sounds like this place would be a good fit for it though.   I might just have to polish it up and send it off.

And as this is the WotF thread, a query:  On Ralan, this mag is listed as semi-pro--so a sale here wouldn't count as "one of the three", correct?

Yeah, Weird Tales only pays 3–4¢ per word, so it doesn't meet SFWA's 5¢ threshold for a qualifying market.
http://www.sfwa.org/join-us/sfwa-membership-requirements/#shortfiction

However, last year Weird Tales won the Best Semiprozine Hugo, making it by that yardstick the most respected semiprozine out there. (And the perennial winner, Locus, doesn't print fiction at all, so Weird Tales is one of only two fiction magazines to win the award since 1984.)

The WotF rules lay out their own qualifications for "professional". It's 5000 copies and/or views and payment. I'm unclear on whether that payment has to meet SFWA's "pro" threshold or not.

HM list on Yahoo is longer than the one posted on the WotF blog.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Honorable-Mentions-Announced-prnews-447533415.html?x=0&.v=1

I'm near the bottom.  Another HM.  8)

Anyone else see their name?  Apparently, all the choosing is done.  So, be looking for names very soon.

Theoretically.

I gotta get busy on my Q02 2010 entry...

Good job, Dan!

My name wasn't on that list, and I've still yet to hear anything from Joni. Interesting.

All right, so the blog says semifinalists and finalists come out tomorrow. This means they are all decided and everything. For me, in particular, I haven't heard anything from WotF at all. I think... I think this is an extremely good sign for me, right? Someone smack me upside the head and tell me I'm being silly.

I can hardly wait for tomorrow.

EDIT: Okay, results are up, and I'm not surprised in the slightest that I'm not there. It's just interesting however that I didn't specifically get a rejection email. Oh well! I can't let myself be cocky :P
