So, in the meantime, another story attacked. I've written the first chapter in what I am calling a "modern mystery/thriller with fantastical elements"

You should use the term "Urban Fantasy." It is a genre that sells well.

* ErikHolmes wonders if The Sword of Worlds counts as Urban Fantasy . . .

Rural fantasy given the spot where Kail is lying bleeding to death. :P

Yes, urban fantasy.

Renoard: Next time I trip over something (I'm a klutz, so there will be ample opportunity) I'll make sure I do it for you. Does that help?

Also, I've written a whopping 205 words today, so...

Work and rehearsal done with for another day. Time to see if I can get anything actually accomplished.

Too bad all the violent bits in my book are done with now. ::)

I don't measure in word count as much as completed chapters.  48 chapters outlined, and barring the need to split chapters 17 left to write.  I need a second me.

Heh. I'd need three or four mes just to keep up. But that's a terrifying thought, so let's not go there.

I would have no idea how much progress I was making if I measured by chapters, since my chapters range in length from 3-8000 words. ::)

I'm at 154,834 (but I've also written some scenes that replaced older material, needed to be done for plot continuity).

I'll report back tomorrow, since the end of tomorrow is my self-imposed deadline to finish the thing.

Wish me luck. ;)

You're all heart. :P

Okay, so it's half a day later than I said it would be.

Final draft pulled in at 159, 536.

I've written 73,400 words in the last month.

Geez.

Congrats on finishing Silk! That's about the same size QO was when I first finished, but than I've been trying to get it way shorter because it's supposed to be YA. You might be okay for adult.

Anyway, I got almost 4k words written this weekend (in another book). I'm a really slow writer, so I'm happy. :D

Just to put it in perspective.  I now have 16 chapters out of 48 left to write with 149648 words counting some works done towards those 16 chapters.  It is almost certain I'll have a to add more chapters to t account for character arcs that separate pe0ple geographically for a while.  Looks very likely I'll crest 250K before I'm finished.

And I'm not able to get enough alone time to write a whole chapter per week.

I'm afraid I'm an agent blog junkie on that kind of thing and figure that I don't want to give them an easy excuse to reject me when I get to querying. My writing just isn't that good. But maybe you'll beat the odds. :)

I meant that I'm trying to fit my word counts closer to the guidelines set by blogging agents/publishers like the one I linked to because I think it gives you a better chance of getting published, which was what sparked my first comment to Silk. The count you put up to 'put things in perspective' would be well beyond those guidelines. :)

Ah, but 1 this is the first draft, second it's epic fantasy, and c it's mechanical numbers, using the enormous font I have to use to compensate for my dyslexia.  Using estimated word count and a reasonable font it'll likely clock in closer to 180K.  But push come to shove the story has to be done well, and hacking down just to please corporate types is not necessarily the best choice.  I don't know if I'll actually submit it as my first novel.  I have a couple of other ideas that I might write and submit first.  I was just complaining about the environment I'm working in.

Look, I'm really not trying to fight you. Just share information. I really don't care how long your book ends up being. It's your book. But I don't believe I was talking about 'hacking it down to just to please corporate types' but books that have been edited well usually do fall into those guidelines and they sell better (even in 'epic' fantasy). It's just a statistical fact.
I'm sorry that you have a poor writing environment.
