Yeah... law school.  Hope he wasn't too traumatized.  I managed to get and only be mildly mentally disturbed.  I think the violence in my stories might be a symptom.

Chapter 2 isn't working so far. I've written and deleted the opening scene half a dozen times now. I know what I want to happen by the end, what needs to happen by the end, but getting there is proving difficult. Not to mention I've had at least three different directions to take the entire novel in, only one of which would lead to my planned ending in a manner that feels natural. Then again, this planned ending is constrained by the fact that this is intended as the first book of a series - as it is currently, I don't think it could stand on it's own if it had to. I'm certain I can still make it work, but it's going to require some re-plotting.

So tomorrow, I'm going to scrap the chapter outline and make an attempt at discovery writing. I don't know where it's going to take me or the story, but I ain't got nothing to lose.

EDIT: Amazing what writing out the problem can do for you. About ten minutes after I wrote the above, I managed to think of a solution to the ending issue. Needs some fine-tuning, but I think it'll work... now I just need to solve the issue of chapter 2. XD

He was fairly traumatized, but also excited because he got straight A's and good feedback on his winter internship. He listened to law podcasts the whole time and would randomly go off on tangents about contracts. Stupid contacts.

LTU, you don't understand, all lawyers are nerds; they are just the nerds who decided to put on suits.  And the random tangents about weird aspects of the law?  That is 100% normal for a law student.  Freakishly normal, especially right before/after finals when you have bits of law leaking out your ears because you just got done memorizing an entire semester's worth of information.

Ah, those were the days . . . that sucked . . .

Yay! Are you gonna send the chapter out late, or wait until Monday?

I'm pump it late if I'm allowed.  Since I have several chapters in reserve I could do it both late and Monday . . . he he.

Feel free to shoot it out. There wasn't too many submissions, and you have a buffer, so its kind of a win-win.

Dalrymple, the King, and the Future just got rejected from Orson Scott Card's Intergalactic Medicine Show. That's progress, right?

Where should I send it next? Any ideas?

Have you sent it to Writers of the Future?

Hmm. There's also Science Fiction and Fantasy, and one of Asimov's or Analog takes fantasy as well as sci-fi, though I don't remember which...

How many words did the ms turn out to be?
