Who was the Announcer? (Spoilers)
« on: December 23, 2008, 03:32:54 AM »
So, if Sazed ends up being the Hero of Ages, then who was the Announcer?  Did he announce himself (even though he hadn't figured it out yet and got the object of his announcement wrong)?  Does TenSoor fit?  Or does that part of the prophecies fall by the wayside?

I'm guessing the prophesies fall by the wayside.
But, I could be sooo wrong.

Brandon said the Announcer was made up completely by Ruin. Some of the prophecy is real, but not much of the real part was left.

Didn't Ten Soon call Sazed the Announcer?  I thought the kandra had the original prophecy.

The Kandra may have had the prophecy as it was at the time of Rashek's ascension, but Ruin had already corrupted it by then.

Ruin had corrupted it by then. Kwaan thought he was the Announcer for Alendi. And yes, TenSoon did call Sazed the Announcer, but that was because TenSoon, like Sazed, thought Vin was the HoA....

It's fascinating to see how the prophecy changed over the course of time, which I believe it might have even without Ruin's influence.  For instance, the church of the Survivor had the "Holy First Witness" (or something like that, I don't have the books in front of me), which sounds very much like "Announcer".

That's the other thing about prophecies too.  So many ways to interpret (and misinterpret) them.

Well, the Kandra had it written, so it couldn't change that much (probably not at all) since Kwaan and Alendi. But, before that, yes, I really believe they changed depending on the ones who believed in it. But again, with Ruin being before most changes, it's difficult to know which ones would have happened anyway, even if Ruin hadn't existed.

I think the Holy First Witness was Ruin's influence though. He was making more and more things point towards the need for an Announcer. Sazed noticed that, but I can't remember where. I think it was in WoA. He noticed that a bunch of older religions had similar titles to the HoA, and that most had a secondary person similar to the Announcer....

And it doesn't matter if it's written. Ruin can change written things. He just can't change things written in metal because he can't read it to change it. Plus, the written version the Kandra had had already been changed by Ruin so he wouldn't have needed to change it. It was already twisted for his purposes.

I think Hanami's point about it being written points to it not being changed since Kwann seems how all of the Kandra writings were done with in metal.  However, the prophecies were most likely already corrupted at that point.  In my opinion it is likely that an announcer always did exist though.  Now maybe the announcer was never suppose to announce a person but just the fact that the HOA was coming.  That would allow the announcer and the HOA to be the same person without them ever realizing it.  Ruin always leaves similar messages and does not make drastic changes to the text that has been writtin.  Otherwise the changes are to noticeable.

Not quite always.  He made an exception for when Preservation was trying to write in the ash for Elend.

True.  That was defiantly an exception.  One that ended with some strange acting and pointing as I recall.  But, that scene also shows the point of how the drastic changes where noticed immediately.  That's why I find it hard to see Ruin making big changes. I did just read some of the HOA spoiler thread though and EUOL stated that the Announcer was just made up by Ruin so that Ruin could control the image of who he wanted to be the HOA.
