WotC Discoveries Open Call almost open
« on: August 10, 2007, 07:08:48 PM »
Thought you guys might be interested in this:

Wizards of the Coast Discoveries is a fantasy-tinged speculative fiction imprint that discovers new worlds, new talent, and new voices for adult fiction readers. If you've seen the latest PW, you should look for the WotC Discoveries ad about halfway through--it's very nice. Note that they'll be open for unagented submissions next month, though agented submissions can be sent year-round.

Quote
Wizards of the Coast Discoveries, a brand new imprint debuting in January 2008, is looking for well-written speculative fiction. We will open for submissions September 1 and close for submissions January 15. Further guidelines can be found at http://www.wotcdiscoveries.com.

Agented submissions are welcome year round.

In January 2008, Discoveries will launch this exciting new imprint with Firefly Rain, a southern gothic ghost story by Richard Dansky. Further launch titles include Last Dragon by J.M. McDermott and Devil’s Cape by Rob Rogers, both first-time novelists who were selected from previous open calls.

Good Luck!

So if you've got a manuscript you think would fit Discoveries--I hear from my compatriots that they're looking for speculative fiction like magical realism, high fantasy that breaks boundaries (i.e., this is not your father's high fantasy), horror--they're pretty open right now, but it needs to be of a literary bent for adults. Follow the submission guidelines and don't submit until Sept. 1.

And feel free to pass this along to writers you know, writing groups, etc.

From the post I get the feeling that Science Fiction is not the sort of speculative fiction they're looking for.  Am I right?

I have a feeling Fell will be submitting things if you want "Boundaries" to be broken.

I'm not sure on science fiction. Probably depends on the kind of sf, but I'll ask.

Have you read my serial killer book? It seems like a good fit.

How are the contracts working--are they pretty standard "Wizards retains all the creative rights to your stuff" contracts, or more like normal author contracts from other houses?

From the post I get the feeling that Science Fiction is not the sort of speculative fiction they're looking for.  Am I right?

I followed the link and it says this:
Quote
Though no two books in this line will be quite the same, each will share some element of fantasy, science fiction, or horror. From magical realism to techno-thrillers and back again, these are books where anything can happen.

This brilliant line-up of original works come from a range of speculative fiction genres, from the southern gothic ghost story to a unique take on superhero mythology, to spooky and enlightening memoir, to challenging literary fantasy, and more.

Looks like sci-fi is part of the line.

Thanks for the notice Stacer.

I got an email from Mark Sehestedt that he was leaving Wizards and told me that the story I submitted to him was being passed on to the new editor.  Do you know if that will change the sort of stuff they are looking for?

What they posted on the site is what they're looking for. Each editor has his or her own preferences, but there are a handful of editors looking, so the tastes run a range.
