Aighhhhh!!! I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. I did try to write a month ago and it kicked me off and then...

Well, I shaved off a hundred and fifty pages off one of my sf books. I'm so proud...I think it might actually be better now!

The Aladdin Jr. play went well. The kids didn't rebel.

And...oh, time is so precious because I know I'll get kicked off pretty soon, but in about a month I think I'll have better internet. Yeah, you care, but I care.

Anyway, I miss you guys too!

Well, it's good to see that you are still alive at least. I don't think TWG could have handled the loose of a published author. Especially one of LDS "chick lit."

When your internet gets better, I have some fellow Covenant chick-lit authors to introduce you to. Did you ever read Meridian Magazine's "A Single Thought" column?

I read A Single Thought all the time, because my next book's protagonist is a thirty-ish single female, and I'm trying to get a better handle on what makes them tick.  Generally, I find it entertaining and interesting.

However, a recent column included a bizarrely hypocritical (and funny) statement.  She begins by talking about she has four make-or-break issues with guys.  She makes a few slight consolations, trying to imply that she's not OCD, but says these things:

Quote
Why should I be with a man who can’t take care of me properly?  I do a great job of taking care of myself now and I won’t settle for life, let alone eternity, with someone who does a second rate job of it.

...

Men need to step up to the plate and be good enough for the women.  I can’t remember the last time I actually met a single man who was not only good enough, but also smart enough to be asking out women.

Her four issues are these:
1. Dependibility
2. Fingernails
3. Blushing
4. Shower Curtains

So, after making these statements, and presenting herself as an extremely particular person, who likes things just a perfectly certain way, she makes the following rant about men:

Quote
I actually do meet “good enough men” upon occasion.  They just tend to be the same exact men who are too busy to be dating, or too focused on finding a perfect conifer that they miss the trees for the forest.[/b]

Hello pot?  It's kettle.  You're black.

I've read and re-read the paragraphs, and I swear she doesn't mean this tongue-in-cheek.  (Or, if she does, it doesn't come across that way.)

Here's the full article: read it, because maybe I'm wrong.  http://www.ldsmag.com/singlethought/060510curtain.html

Well, there's also one right here...

I read that article, and I'm sure that the intention was tongue-in-cheek as far as the list goes, or at least 3/4 tongue-in-cheek (I'd assume dependability actually is important on anyone's list). I'd never really say that A Single Thought really ever had a good editor--most of the articles are entirely too long and could be much more funny in half the space--but it was pretty much the only article addressing these issues out there written by LDS girls of a "certain age" (until it ended its run a couple months ago). I always felt the readership skewed to much older than 30 and usually divorced, though, when reading reader responses.

I have to agree with the sentiment of not needing someone to "take care" of me, because I can pretty much take care of myself and have been doing it for a while. What that article might not address (I didn't click the link and I'm going on memory) is that just because you don't need someone to take care of you doesn't mean you don't want a partner to be beside you as you both live your lives--and that might mean sometimes taking care of each other, but that's not the main focus. Equally yoked and all that.

Have you ever read my not-so-private-anymore personal LJ? I've said a few things about being single and thirty-something in the LDS church on it, though I don't think there's anything recent on there, and they might have been friends-locked. But you're welcome to browse and see if you find something that will help you. (norroway.livejournal etc)

Cool.  Thanks.

In a couple of weeks, when I'm getting more into this, do you mind if I email you a couple questions?  (I can't even think about it yet -- my wife said I'm not allowed to start working on the next project until all the marketing for Counterfeit is done.)

Sweet!  Stacer... Google thinks you must be a lesbian because you're an unmarried 30 something.

I'd sue. :D

Well, if that's the case, I don't think Covenant's going to publish this book.

what if she's a lesbian who finds the error of her sinful ways and repents and marries a returned missionary?

Ack! That's horrible! Um, so if you want to ask questions about a single thirty something...uh, guess who's having a birthday. Oh yeah! Trauma trauma trauma, so go ahead and ask if you need the research.

And about the dependability issue...yeah, it's so true. I've had people try to set me up with these 'projects,' as they call them. I can really 'turn' so and so around, that kinda thing...and I remember saying pretty much the same thing that the girl said... "I can barely take care of myself...why would I want to take care of some guy that I don't even like too.' Now flay me alive, but I think that unless you're equally yoked (or as equally as you can get), and you have the love factor, then sure, you can give a hundred percent...but there has to be trust there too...that he'll be the type that will be trying too.

My two cents!
