Best Email Lately
« on: December 01, 2005, 05:20:22 PM »
Got this bit of mail through the brandonsanderson.com site:
Quote

I have just completed Elantris, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.  One of the reasons I liked it so much is because I am currently undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer and feel like an Elantrian in every way.  My hair all fell out and my skin is blotchy and dry and wrinkled.  I am 38 and I feel like Im 70.  I wish I could convey to you how much your book meant to me.  It  was very uplifting and I feel like I will "complete my tranformation" after chemo is finished in January.  I can't wait to share it with some of my breast cancer friends.  Thank you for a truly enjoyable read during possibly the worst time of my life.

All I can say is wow.

Yeah, no kidding, "Wow." What a great email. Isn't it nice to know how much your writing can touch people?

Elantris the Opera--that could be interesting.  ;D

Good thing I've learned Spriggan Speak and can translate that as "Oprah."  ;)

That's got to be a great feeling, knowing you've touched someone in a deep way, beyond just enjoying your book. That's what I love about stories, actually--that when you find one that you really resonate with, there are multiple layers of enjoyment.

Yeah, that is totally cool. It reminded me of when my dad went through chemo when he got stomach cancer.

How cool, indeed! You know, I'd never thought about the Shaod like that before. It made me think of leprosy a lot and how it would've been to live with that horrible disease. It's so awesome how Elantris has all these various depths to it that one might not immediately discover.

Cool.

Freaky cool. THat's exactly what I want to do with my literature. I hide behind a veil of literary snobbery as well as fantasy snobbery, but I really just want to touch people. And you've done it. YOu've officially filled all the goals I had for myself, EUOL. Now I have to kill you and steal your identity.

Couldn't resist this movie reference:

Jack Black in School of Rock as Dewey Finn:  Your kids have all really touched me, and I'm pretty sure that I've touched them.

But seriously, it's a cool email.  Warm fuzzies all over.

Good question. (I hope he did!) Though that would be hard to write a thank you to, um, do justice to that thank you. Huh, that sounds kind of weird. *shrug* Still, I wondered that, too.
