animal songs
« on: January 31, 2004, 02:46:22 PM »
Ok, I'm not looking for kids' music, let's get that out of the way.

I've decided I want to make a CD of goofy animal songs performed by rock groups. Here's my list so far:

Eels, "I Like Birds"
Young Fresh Fellows, "The Otter Song"
They Might Be Giants, "Flight of the Barking Death Squirell"
Dead Milkmen, "The Badger Song"
The Kinks, "Apeman" (because "Rats" is too serious)
The Beatles, "Piggies"

That's six tracks. I'd really like to make it 12 songs at least, and preferably fill an 80 minute CD. I'm thinking about adding the B-52s "Rock Lobster" which I like better than "June Bug"

Also, I don't like to have a ton of songs by the same band, 2 maybe three by the same artist TOPS. Preferably only one. So branch out for me here. Any suggestions?

Of course you know that Ookla has an entire album that deals mostly with monkeys, but I'd recommend "Hockey Monkey"

Since I don't know any of those songs really, I'm not sure how much they deal with the animal in question, so my other suggestions you might or might not like.

Prince - When Doves Cry
Tokens - The Lion sleeps Tonight
primus - tommy the cat
Flaming Lips - Giraffe or "This here giraffe"  (I don't remember)

Yeah, "Hockey Monkey" came to mind since then. Also Devo's "Go Monkey Go" (monkeys make everything 57% more funny, so it's not surprising there are a lot of goofy monkey songs. I don't know the Giraffe song. Those other ones just don't fit in with the mood, except maybe the Primus one.

Here's some that almost work that I'll use out of desperation to finish the disc:
"Flight of the Cosmic Hippo," by BĂ©la Fleck and  the Flecktones (instrumental)
"Fee" by Phish
"Love Cats" The Cure
"Hound Dog" I have versions by Elvis, Eric Clapton, and Jimi Hendrix

As for TMBG, they also have "Mammal" and "Cowtown" which would work great, but i'm trying to limit any one group's representation

Oh, what about that one from that cartoon collection you have. "Stop that pigeon."

Primus goes with everything - without downloading the songs you mentioned first, what kind of a mood are you going for?

ok, culling my mp3 collection has shown me that Too Much Joy does "The Otter Song," not Young Fresh Fellows, opening up "Monkey Say" (another monkey song) for usage. plus there's the Murmurs "Bumblebees," and Shonen Knife's "I Am a Cat"

"Dr. Worm" by TMBG is actually a stronger song than "FotBDS," so I'm probably using that one instead.

"Stop the Pigeon" may work, except that it's merged with Johnny Quest.

More potentials:
Uranium Based Life Form, "Walrus X"
Shadowy Men from a Shadowy Planet, "Run Chicken Run"
Peter Gabriel, "Kiss that Frog" ("Shock the MOnkey is too dark)
Suicide Machines, "Sometimes I Don't Mind"

Mood: goofy. prince himself is goofy, but "When Doves Cry" is not a goofy song. It's about marital/relationship strife. "The Lion Sleeps TOnight" just doesn't do it.

ok, i have 11 songs (12 once I decide whether I'm going to download Tommy the Cat or just settle on Too Many Puppies), but htat only puts me just over half an hour.

Maybe I'll have to use some of my less than perfect choices.

I would suggest going to allmusic.com, clicking on the "song search" and searching for whatever animal you like.

I know it's obvious, but has the BNL chimpanzee song been mentioned yet?

Also, I second Fuzzy's vote for the Lion Sleeps Tonight.
