RIAA Radar

A tool for those wishing to boycott the RIAA, or just know what artists/labels/albums are affiliated.

This website has a tool that will help you determine what albums are RIAA "Safe" (unaffiliated), and which are not:

I think, given my current low income and the imminence of flat-fee music subscription programs, I'm going to start boycotting the RIAA, myself.  There are plenty of good groups like the Stonering and E.S. Posthumus which are unaffiliated.

I got warnings for almost all of the albums from all of the artists I searched, including: Stone Temple Pilots, Our Lady Peace, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Fuel, Genesis, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Van Halen, Oasis, Pink Floyd, Barenaked Ladies, John Mellencamp, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Matchbox 20, Cold, Third Eye Blind, Alice in Chains, and 38 Special. I;m not sure how much I believe that site, but that is what it said.

That shouldn't be surprising.  Most big labels (all of those artist, to my knowledge, are signed with big labels) support and pay money to the RIAA.

In order to find people who aren't signed with the RIAA, you'll generally need to look for less popular artists.  On occasion, you'll find popular artists who are unaffiliated, but it is rare.

A few labels' affiliations are "in dispute", and you can see that list here:  http://www.magnetbox.com/riaa/help.asp

Addendum:
It's not like we're in a fair fight, here.  The RIAA is massive.  I was very glad to notice that Loreena McKennitt and (to my shock) ATB are free of RIAA influence.  But they've got the numbers.

I'm not surprised about most of them, but some like Toad the Wet Sprocket make me skeptical, since Toad is one of the most liberal bands when it comes to how their music is used.

The band can be liberal, but their label, Sony, owns their music, and Sony is, unquestionably, affiliated with the RIAA.

A way to find good music that isn't RIAA-associated.  (It's a record label, but they're not evil)
