Writers and Illustrators of the Future

Alright, since I like to be the instigator of contests that take away from peoples lives and the such. Here's another one.

www.writersofthefuture.com

Now, it opens up a new window, a popup if you will. Its a full screen one though, so I'm not sure how many it will annoy.

Not too sure what it entails. But all you have to do is have a work of prose, up to 17,000 words in length. The contest is only open to those who have not had a novel published professionally. (Professional publication is deemed to be payment, and at least 5,000 copies, or 5,000 hits.)

You also have to print out the manuscript and mail it to them.

They have prizes for each quarter (which begin on oct. 1st, Jan. 1st, April 1st, and July 1st) which consist of $1000 for 1st, $750 for 2nd, and $500 for 3rd. As well as a Grand Prize winner will receive an additional $4000. The year ends on Sept. 30th.

Only one manuscript per quarter, and no revisions are accepted.

So, now that you know, will you take the challenge?

Hah.  I think you'll find many of those here already know about WOTF, Gemm.  I was a semi-finalist in the competition last year, though I'm no longer eligible.

However, I do think it's a wonderful contest, and I'm glad you posted it here.  I've been quoted as saying that every aspiring SF-F author should send something to WOTF every three months.

I don't have any gripes about it, but I feel that its just too show-y. Like awards shows, I feel like its some sort of flashy hoot-nanny who's just looking to find someone they can exploit.

It's actually a much better indicator of how good the winner is than most award shows. It's prestigious exactly because it's not flashy.

Also, the big WOTF thing is that you retain all copyright, and by winning your story is not considered published.  A lot of the more questionable contests will give you a 'prize' of fifty bucks, then make you sign a winner's agreement (or a submission agreement) that essentially says you're giving them first serial rights to publish the story.  Not so bad with short stories, but watch out for novel contests that do things like that.
