Need a proofreader
« on: January 02, 2004, 11:14:59 AM »
Any of you out there (Saint, Fell, MoD, EUOL (though I wouldn't take spelling suggestions  ;)) ) who know literature pretty well available for a quick proof later today? I'm working on my final paper, due midnight tonight, and I'm going to need a fresh pair of eyes to look at the paper and tell me most especially if I have any lapses in logic or organization. I'm throwing it together last-minute and don't have the time to distance myself from it. Let me know if you're willing and able. I plan on getting at least most of my rough draft done by noon, and would like someone to look at it this afternoon while I run some errands so I can come back to it fresh with comments waiting.

It's only going to be about 6-7 pages, a quick read. I'm analyzing Tamora Pierce's Alanna: The First Adventure using Campbell's archetypal hero's journey and multiculturalism, then synthesizing and deconstructing them.

well, it looks like work wil be slow, so if you finish it by noon I can give it a quick looksee. [email protected]
I don't have my Campbell here, though, and I've never read the book in question, but that's never stopped me before (I've gotten A's on college papers about books I've not read and based entirely on the class discussions I skipped as often as not. Anything you can remember about Campbell and point out to me, great. I'm looking more for a general "What the heck are you trying to say here?" if I make no sense, or if my organization is off, or if something would work better somewhere else, or if I make leaps in logic that you think I should fill in.

Thanks!

I might have time.  This is gaming night, though, so I'd be reading it while occasionally smacking things with a broadsword.  I'm sure Campbell would prefer it were a lightsaber, but he'll live.

Oh, and I do have my HERO close, but I don't know that I'll be in any position to do any referencing.  Still, you can fire off a copy to [email protected] if you want me to try and look it over.

Stacer, I couldn't find the reference to women that I thought I remembered in my Campbell, so maybe I was just wrong about that.

EUOL, thanks for the offer, but I just turned it in to my teacher. AND it's two hours early!  8) Or two weeks late, whichever way you want to look at it. I'm just glad it's done.

Saint, I think you were right, and I adjusted accordingly. I don't have it in my notes, but I'm almost positive that one of the girls presenting on archetypal criticism said the same thing--that Campbell gives a nod to women being possible, but that he largely ignores them, especially when it comes to the "woman as temptress" and "meeting with the goddess" stages. I just adjusted to say that Alanna filled both roles, both as the female-as-a-male hero and as the temptress, denying the creative power of her own body and becoming repulsed by the changes in her body during puberty.

Well, one class down, one to go--now I have to finish off picture book. I'm really glad I'm taking next semester off. I need breathing room.

well, I'm pretty tired, but I did have a couple thoughts on how to reword it, if the criticism ignores women largely, I'm pretty sure you could make a statement pretty easily about how even though he nods at women, he EXPECTS the hero to be male.
