What do you collect?
« on: May 06, 2004, 07:53:12 PM »
Well, we all have our fav. authors and genres, but what kind of books do you collect and show off on your bookshelf/(shelves)?

I love to collect the "real stories," preferably something that I can associate with a movie.  For instance, I have the original story of Peter Pan, 101 Dalmations, Bambi, the Jungle Book, the Boy Who Could Fly, and a couple of versions of Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Aladin (or Arabian Nights, etc.), and Cinderella.  Every single one of which is completely opposite of the movie/cartoon.  Though that may be because Disney always changes its movies.

At the moment, I'm into children's literature and my bookshelf is bursting with books no more than 100-200 pages.  All of it fictional.  And where do I go to get all this great literature?  Why, DI, of course.  Where I can find the best books of my childhood for only 50 cents.

I also have a thing for children's books (as if everyone didn't already know this). Mainly children's fantasy, with several different versions of fairy tale retellings. And then there's the science fiction section, the historical fiction section, the mainstream fiction section, the nonfiction section, and the picturebook section. And then there are the writing books and the family history books and the nonfiction folklore.

And then there's every Calvin and Hobbes collection and several of the littler books. I love Calvin and Hobbes.

I also have a good collection of author-signed books, which I'm very proud of.

"snooty" things
basically anything that shows off how erudite and educated I am. Yes, darn you, I have that copy of Thucydides and what's more, you'll realize it's on a shelf of books I READ. The books have to look nice too. So I have Spanish and English hard bound copies of Don Quijote, The Illustrated Brief History of Time, a set of selections from Arabian Knights, Morte Arthure, the LotR, a Throeau set, and a variety of graphic novels that I put in this set. THere are only two conditions, they have to be smart, and look smart.

I have 26 discworld novels. Want the list?

I collect fantasy. About 75 - 100 books thereof. My collection is split between about 6 authors mainly. Damn prolific fantasy authors...

I mostly collect science fiction and fantasy books, old childrens book series (like Trixie Belden, or the Bobbsey Twins), and editing books.  Lots and lots of editing books. And folklore books--I've gained quite a few of those in the past two years.

I've got a bunch of other types--classic literature, chinese and ASL books, mainstream fiction, some nonfiction (mostly books on writing with a smattering of other types), but the majority consists of my list above.

Star Trek paperbacks, and novelizations of the Doctor Who episodes.

At least my collections are cheap.

I collect second hand books mostly, sci-fi primarily, and pretty much anything I like that I can get my hands on. I want to fill a whole room with books.

Thing is, when I walk into a second hand bookstore, I walk out with a dozen new books and $20 lighter, which I why I do not go into them frequently. Like the time I wanted to just browse around, and I am yet to start any of those books.

Hehe Jam, you should see my house then.  We have a fairly big house, which is *filled* with books.  As i recall, when we put them in storage, we several hundred sq metres of books. And we've acquired a *lot* since then.  but anyway.

Um, largely atm, collecting fantasy of all kinds.  I'm also starting to build up a collection of computer books and art books.

I also have a small but growing history section, which serves as the intellectual section. ;)

History by subject, and a large portion of that by accident or quirk of fate.

Piratical history has occupied a large chunk lately, but I have 25 books on WWII, 5 about Armies and Wars of the 1800's Usually British wars. And Over 30 on the American Civil War.

Plus Latin Textbooks, books on famous places and a fluxuating library of RPG books.
