heh, I just have to say, Stacer, that this quote is wonderful:

"Evil and psychotic dragons are taking over the world, so we must defend our lives" is as good a reason as any to slaughter large numbers of fictional evil cultists. Besides, some of those were zombies anyway.

Anyway, you gave this book a better review than I expected. Maybe I'm just jaded when it comes to these, but when I read the back about a half-golem/half-person, it set off bells that said "gimmick to make the character unique, no real content." I'm glad to see that I was disappointed and I didn't inflict too much horror on you, Stacer.

anyway, I've got a small pile of novels that are the second or third in a series here. Let me know if you want any. I've decided that I don't want to review them. I think it's not fair to the book to give it a review out of context like that when so many of them are obviously dependent on reading the whole series

I have to admit, I tore it apart at first. But it took me a couple weeks to finish the review, and after allowing it to simmer for a while, I realized it didn't scar me quite so badly as it could have. It wasn't boring--it just wasn't outstanding.

I'll have to tell you what I think of reading 2nd or 3rd books in series after I read the other one you've already sent me.

(Sigh.)  I used to LOVE these kinds of books when I was a teenager.  I started with Tolkien, Donaldson, and McCaffery.  How did I end up in TSR's intellect-sucking embrace?

Because there actualy were a few good TSR books (the original drizzit and dragon lance books) and after reading them and saying "they're not that bad" you move onto others and get consumed by crappyness.

You were probably roleplaying while you were reading these books, right?  It all about crossover - your gaming experiences resonated with the gaming-based books and at that time that was really cool for you, I'm guessing.

So, Morag and I had lunch with a WotC Dragonlance novelist on Saturday (actually, kind of by accident--we were going out to lunch with Dave, and Dan kinda got sucked in as we were out searching for a place to eat.)

Learned some interesting things about WotC publishing.  Just a warning--if you're planning to sell to them and make a living at it...well...good luck.
