Hey Ookla/Comicon
« on: June 16, 2006, 07:50:11 PM »
You going to Comicon? As of today, I will be working the Wizards booth, and in my off time be able to see whether it's a place we (Mirrorstone) want to be.

Yup. Comic-Con is our biggest con this year.

Well, at least I assume I personally will be going along. I did the past two years.

It's a huuuge convention...I mean, nothing else begins to compare. There could be 20 times more people than Worldcon Boston. It's very easy for little booths to get lost.

I would stop by the Penguin/Ace booth and ask them their opinion of the convention's worth for a small presence like that. Talk to Anne Sowards if she's there.
All Saiyuki fans should check out Dazzle! Emotionally wrenching action-adventure and quirky humor! (At least read chapter 6 and tell me if you're not hooked.) Volume 10 out now!

I'll try to find you when I'm there. And Wizards is always there with a huge booth; I imagine if Mirrorstone came, it'd be part of that presence. That's a good idea to talk to Anne--I've never met her before and I've been looking for an opportunity. Perhaps if you and I happen to have free time at the same time, you could introduce me. (I have no idea what my schedule will be at this point, but it's an idea.)

I'm not entirely positive Anne is going, though she did for the past two years. She might have mentioned something to me about only going on Saturday.

This isn't Comic-con related, but since this is a quick question, I figured why start a new thread. I have a question about Tokyopop's forums. I ran across this thread tonight, and every single page will only start from about halfway down the page, and you can't scroll up to the top. Is that happening for anyone else if you click on that link? Is this something Tokyopop is aware of and fixing, or is it just my computer?

I would venture to suggest that it's probably a style sheet issue.  IE6 and the rest of the browsers in the world interpreted some of the positioning tags very differently and IE7 tries to bring itself in line with the rest of the world.  So, new versions of either Firefox or IE will probably screw up a lot of people's positioning for a while.

I don't think it's soly a style issue, it works on FF just fine, it's probably an IE7 issue since it's in beta, I've noticed that sometimes pages just don't finish loading in it but I've never noticed it not loading the top part.

Just looked at the source and aside from the fact it's got two doctypes, HTML and Body tags there's nothing wrong with the code.  In fact it's some pretty dang clean code, even using conditional comments for separate IE CSS sheets (which means they'll probably need a new one for IE), their main page is a little wonked in IE 7 too though since there are a few lay out bugs in Beta 3 that shouldn't be there it's hard to tell if it's IE 7s new rendering engine or a bug that's causing it.

[edit] Ya the problem is the center div that's supposed to be inside the main tokyopop "template" is floating way off the screen.

here's the offending code
Code: [Select]

div#content {
     display: block;
     float: left;
     clear: right;
     width: 692px;
     margin: -604px 0 0 0;
     color: #444;
     background-color: #fff;
     /*background-image: url('pics/metal_lite_bg.jpg');*/
}

that lovely little -604 on the top margin does it.  So ya, they're going to need a new IE7 CSS sheet without that.

Thank you.  Thank you.  I accept your accolades.  It was indeed a CSS positioning issue.   ;D

humm...intresting.  I check the IE 6 only CSS and the only changes it makes to the Content div is

Code: [Select]

div#content{
     padding-top: 22px;
     height: 193px;
}

That would mean they're using the same negative margin number there, which doesn't quite make sense since the IE one should probably be about 100 less.  I guess this could look messed up in IE 6, but I doubt it, so I'm starting to lean back to the beta bug.  But that is the correct container.  So if that's not rendering correctly on any IE browser then we know it's a margin error, if it looks good in IE6 then we know it's a IE7 bug.

Sounds like it's a beta bug. I'm using the IE7 beta, too. I looked at it at work, which is IE6, and it worked right.

There are other bugs too...in the forum it seems if topic titles are more than a certain length, the left half of all the avatars gets cut off...

They said they'll support IE 7 when it's officially released. Hopefully more bugs in the new site get worked out before then.

Ya, there's no reason to officially support a beta browser, I do on my websites so I could learn what the difference was between IE6 and 7.  The next beta RC1 (release candidate 1) comes out soon and it should have all of the CSS bugs fixed, which should fix the layout problems with that forum.

Speaking of IE7, RC1 is out

http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/08/24/715752.aspx

Once I get it intalled I'll check tokyopop's page to see if I still get the funky layout.

Update: Still looking funky, so it's got to be that negative margin, but they may not have fixed all the CSS bugs since my site is still having some layout problems that weren't there in Beta 2.  So it looks like scar wins, strange that it would look ok in IE6 without any changes to that.
