I didn't know there was a new Tomb Raider film, but if it sucks, I guess it's follwing in the footsteps of the game. At least there's some kind of consistancy there.

I assume there's some sort of corellation between no marketing whatsoever combined with a probably crappy script and the failure to perform well.

Interestingly, Activision took the opposite approach with Star Trek--they blame the poor performance of their ST games on the fact that Paramount is using the property poorly. They went so far as to let go of the ST license and actually sue Paramount. On one hand, I can see Activision's point here: they paid a ton of money for that license, and Star Trek is weaker now than it's been since before TNG. But on the other hand, I think people will buy a good game no matter how stupid the relevant TV show may or may not be.

The underlying problem is that cross-media tie-ins are really popular right now, and people are putting too much faith in them. Just because you make a movie about a popular video game doesn't mean that you'll have a popular movie--and if the game is unpopular your movie won't automatically follow suit. If you're relying on a demographic of people who like Tomb Raider and go to movies then you're relying on a demographic that's inherently too small to support you. If you further limit your audience to people who aren't bothered by bad stories and stupid dialogue, then you've dug a hole for yourself that no amoun tof cross-media advertising can get you out of.

Well, I can't read the article, but I suspect the blame is because the game, as I've heard, is terrible.  I know it's gotten bad reviews.  So, if they release a bad game right before the movie comes out, that could hurt movie preformance I suppose.

The thing is, Fell touched on something right.  I think that when it comes down to it, a well-done movie is sucessful, and a terrible movie does poorly.  There are exceptions, but generally I think a good plot with good acting and good execution makes for a sucessful movie.  Look at Pirates.  It was a zombie-pirate movie based on a theme-park ride.  But it did really well.  That wasn't because of a zombie-pirate loving demographic.  The sucess comes from having a clever plot with no major stupidities mixed with good acting.

Okay, so i watched Tomb Raider 2.

Film = trash.
Fun = moderate.
Plot = minimal.
Jolie = hot.
Stunts = good.
Deagle gunfire = loud.

Indiana Jones = better.

are you suggesting that we should get Angelina Jolie to play the role of Indiana Jones?

Sure, as long as she bares her chest and kisses her female co-stars like Harrison Ford did.

I think I may have to stop reading this anywhere that my wife might see it. I could get in trouble.

You, of course, have my vote for that. I mean, that pretty much ensures the movie makes cash.

So, am I the only one here who thinks that Jolie is exceptionally unattractive?

I wouldn't say "exceptionally" unattractive, necessarily, just a standard degree of unattractiveness. Boring, mostly.

She's more attractive than Nicole Kidman.
