comments on the Lost *spoiled* thread

I think it's hilarious. I've been reading (or at least skimming) every post as it's made, and I have absolutely no idea what any of it means.

I take it you don't watch Lost?  I understand what you mean - I didn't watch it the first season and didn't catch up with second season until after New Years this year.  I would read the Lost-related posts my friends posted in their blogs every week and go, "Huh, amusing but makes no sense."

I'm glad you're amused - but be careful you might get too curious and get sucked in like me!

doubtful. I refuse to pay for cable and there's no signal in the basement where the TV sits. If I were to catch up on a TV show by buying DVDs it would be Smallville first. Maybe 24 after that. Lost is way down on the list.

I saw a couple of episodes from the beginning of the first season a while ago, and while it is interesting I can't see myself becoming "addicted" to it.

There is such a thing as "renting."

renting a season of a TV show ends up costing $30. Maybe cheaper than buying, but that's a chunk of change. It also demands that I decide when I'm going to watch it. I spend so little time in front of the TV -- I got Smallville season 1 for Christmas 2004, took me till June to watch it -- and I only finished because I was ill for several days.

So renting doesn't really help things anyway.

There's also the fact that ABC lets you watch the episodes for free on their website.

Eric doesn't believe in *paying* for high speed internet when he's in debt. There's a huge difference.

See, then I do the Netflix thing, which lets me rent about 12-15 movies a month for $19, which I usually use to watch the DVDs of TV shows I want to find that either take forever at the library, or that aren't available through the library. But then, I am single, and not chasing small children around the house in the evenings. So I often find I have the free time to kill in front of the TV, and until this month that was the only TV I had access to anyway. I got DirecTV this month and I'm actually regretting it, because it makes me feel like if I'm paying for it (albeit cheaply, because I got a good deal), then I have to watch it.

I'll probably cancel it next month or the next, as the special price ends after 3 months. But it's kind of fun to be able to watch TV every now and then, especially when you're sick and bored. But now that I'm feeling better more often (back down with another sinus infection currently), I don't want to be sucked in--I want to be able to spend my time doing creative and/or active things if my brain is going to work better now.

see, I watch maybe 2 movies a month. Netflix wouldn't work for me.

Amazon has a cheaper option for renting 3 DVDs a month.

Thing is, I get the impression you just wouldn't use/care about any scheme. Just borrow stuff.

Here in the UK, it's barely more expensive to have broadband than it is to have dialup (assuming you don't go for AOL free stuff). Literally, £5 for dialup and £15 for not-amazing broadband. That's 3 pints of ale lost in return for a several times speed boost.
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

Not much more, at the exchange rates. It's, what, $30 for broadband there, then? I'm paying about that a month, but the difference is that I had to get a home phone line first, which costs me another $30 a month. So, total cost, it doubles, but I'm not sure if they already have to have a phone line, too.

broadband is then 3x what I'm paying for dialup. It is much more practical for us to have a land line than a cell phone at this point.
