Time machine
« on: May 09, 2003, 08:00:32 AM »
if the inventor of a time machine would travel back in time and kill himself, what would happen? would the time machine never have been invented and therefor he couldnt travel back in time to kill himself or would he vanish and the timemachine would be left in his past. has anyone tested this cuz i would really like to know what happens before i try it myself

Hi Gargamel, welcome to the forum. As for your question, I don't know of anyone who's tried it, but if your experiments are successful we could certainly use you for a secret mission or two.

I dont know, I think its easier to travel back in time in a time machine rather than a macine.
Its an automated robot. Based on Science!

Not actually El Jeffe.  In my reasearching years I found that macines could actually be useful in time travel, if for safetry concerns if nothing else.

Gargamel, what you propose would tear a fabric in the space/time continuum.  Anybody who's ever read any science fiction knows that :)

And anyone who's read Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency knows that history simply "remembers" a version of itself that makes sense, sort of like scar tissue for the temporal continuum. Everyone knows that a single man could never have that sort of influential impact on the entire universe

As everyone who has had the rest of Douglas Adams' works knows, the meaning of the universe (and life, and everything else) is 42. So really, it doesn't matter if space-time is torn apart, because the answer will likely still be 42.

But for what it's worth, I subscribe to the scar tissue theory.

Gah. So the meaning of life, the universe and everything is a cynical art teacher?

Damn. I bet god is laughing his divine arse off right now :/
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)
