Dreamblade - new minis game from WotC
« on: March 14, 2006, 05:27:34 PM »
Today at GAMA Wizards of the Coast announced a new collectible miniatures game, which looks kind of cool and also kind of stupid. Think of it as 3D Hecatomb, at least conceptually. The site is here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dbm/welcome
If you're ten years old, make sure to watch the trailer--it rocks.

The illustrious PR guys sent me a press kit; I like the art a lot, and the few sculpts they've released look pretty cool, but I have yet to read the rules. The design documents, both in the kit and on the web, strengthen the Hecatomb connection a lot, to the point that I really wonder why they didn't just call it a Hecatomb game. The four "aspects" of Dreamblade are not a direct analogue to the four "dooms" of Hecatomb, but they could be with minimal effort. I guess it just bugs me that, year after year, Wizards insists on ripping itself off: Hecatomb stole the color system from magic, and now Dreamblade stole it from Hecatomb, and they really just need to learn to think for themselves.

I'll upload some of these images later so you can have a look, but in the meantime check out the site and read the rules. The game has potential, despite my knee-jerk dismissal of it. We'll have to see how it turns out.

edit: The release date is projected to be August 9.

I really hate collectable things. I don't want to have to trade and shirt to get what I want. I prefer building armies/whatever to be purely strategic, not focused around 'what do I have in this random box?'. It's kind of fun to open the boxes to see what you get, but i'd prefer to just know at the end of the day.

I guess i'm just against randomness in general huh?
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

Okay, so I've read through the rules and they're actually pretty cool. It's much more of a board game than a minis game, a lot like Stratego Legends in some ways, but surprisingly innovative. It also has some obvious CCG elements: an army is 16 figures, with no point values required, and you pay a cost to put them into play. You play on a 5x5 board, and positioning looks like it's almost more important than combat. And then on top of this high-level strategy game they've added a bunch of neat models with some pretty cool abilities. I have to say, I'm very impressed with what I've seen.

The flavor is also much better than what I expected, given the boringness of the "four color" base system. These are dream creatures fighting in a dream world, and therefore, and nothing is set--the only terrain is what you create (locations are another type of unit, next to creatures), and defeating a creature usually just means that you get to pick it up and put it somewhere else on the board. The rules actually support the flavor in these and other ways, and there are very few games who can say that.

As I said, I still find the color system to be boring--the game is nothing like Hecatomb, as I suggested earlier (for one thing, the rules set is far superior), but the color system is virtually identical. There are four "aspects," and they all have ally aspects and enemy aspects, and I'm just getting so tired of it. Admittedly, Dreamblade uses the system much better than Hecatomb does, but couldn't they have done something new instead?

So anyway, I'm a big tabletop geek and I totally love this kind of stuff. Did anybody else read the rules yet? How am I supposed to discuss them all by myself?

It's amusing when you talk and think we're all interested.

What was that other one, the Heroscape or something. You bought figures and you could shape the land with pieces and other neat things. I think Dr. P has it.

There are more, these are just the ones I thought were the coolest.

Interesting article over at ICv2 about how WotC is planning to give away cash prizes for Dreamblade ($1,000 for local events and 10k for regional ones).

http://www.icv2.com/articles/home/8418.html

Another interesting note from that article is the apparent cancellation of Hecatomb, it was a no-show at GAMA.
Screw it, I'm buying crayons and paper. I can imagineer my own adventures! Wheeee!

Wizards put up a "Virtual Starter Set" the other day, bascially it's pdfs of a map and some units so people can try out the game.
