Card Quiz
« on: May 18, 2004, 10:04:18 AM »
Alright, I ran into an issue that searchable spoilers won't help me with, finally. Does anyone know the name of the card that originally was responsible for applying the name 'Tim' to creatures that deal 1 damage to target creature or player?

My understanding is that it was just The Prodigal Sorcerer. However, that doesn't make sense to me now, since the Prodigal Sorcerer is a Sorcerer, and Tim is an Enchanter.

You're right, SE.  I even remember when 'Timming' entered the vernacular....

Yeah, I was playing Magic when it first when nationwide. What's your point?

Nothing much. I was just trying to figure it out...I might use that information in an upcoming decklist. Prodigal Sorcerer then.

I do think the term "timming" came from the name of a player that was either the World Champion or one of the finaliests at the time, and he allwayse used that card to win so people starting calling it "Tim" after him.

We were 'Timming' before the world championship got big, I'm pretty sure.  We started calling them 'Tims' in college, ('94).  We heard it from a guy who had played down in Texas.

Yes.  I thought that was taken for granted, sorry.  It comes from Tim the Enchanter, as SE mentioned above--he's the guy who goes about blasting things randomly with flames.  Then he says "There are some who call me...Tim."

The things you find out by asking a single question.  :)

Chances are good it won't be all that useful in the end, but thanks for the information.

yeah, i heard the name tim back in cleveland when i started playing during unlimited.  It does come from monty python.  I guess they started calling him tim because he looks like the character from the movie in a weird kind of way and he shoots fireballs.
everything was going fine, until i critically failed my intelligence check!
