Load times take about a minute for me too, and I have 512 RAM.

They took about half a minute for me, I think. Enough time to lose the kill frenzy and start a new train of thought. And then get confused when the game starts again.
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

the pin number is the number of pins. It describes the size of the slot for the chip. Make sure it matches what's on your motherboard.

Hmmm... you sure it's an 8250? Not some kind of 8400? I haven't been able to find any "8250's" on Dell's website. If it's some kind of 8400, it may be DDR Ram you'll need.

I have good news and bad news.

After visiting Dell's site I've found that my comp was one of the few installed with RD RAM which costs a small fortune to upgrade.  So I'll have to suffer through the hiccups of single player.

The good news is that the multiplayer runs like a charm.  I'm still pleased with my purchase because of this.  The mp is what determines the longevity of a game and I think this is going to run just fine.

Sprig, thanks for the Omega Drivers tip!

These things work like a charm.  Not only is HL 2 runnable w/o hiccups now, but I was able to bump up the detail level a few notches. Thanks!

Now, what exactly do Anisotropic (sp) filters do?  When I turn them on they don't seem to effect anything, good or bad.

Think this paragraph from a gamspy article will explain somewhat:
Quote
Where both bilinear and trilinear filters are performed on square areas, an anistropic filter applies what is essentially a trilinear filter but not on a square area. For example, when you're running on a tiled floor through your favorite game, the floor is not square in shape. Instead, it's larger near you and smaller as it extends away from you, making a trapezoid shape. The anisotropic filter (which essentially means "filter from any angle") takes your point of view into account and then performs the filtering on the textures and all their irregular shapes. This takes a lot more computational power and can cause performance hits.

edit: Oh, and I'm glad those drivers worked for you.

So Half Life Deathmatch was released today.

Let me just say that in all the games I've ever played, all the deathmatches I've ever participated in, nothing has ever been as satisfying as a double kill with a grav gun accelerated toilet.
